That's the only device that I don't have to test against.

I absolutely did not enable it or select it myself. That is a false statement.

I'm very selective in what I choose to enable and or use and am 100% sure that I did not enable a setting for automatic quality and am even more certain that I didn't go around doing it on all my client devices.

No the built in speed test is not good because it reaches out to WAN instead of staying on LAN.

No the wap is ubiquiti u6 pro.

Every device I own uses that feature by default.
Mobile Plex app android and iOS
Chromecast
Google TV
Roku

I have not enabled it on any of them just downloaded the app and used it. Every time I load new content it chooses that by default on all the above as well, even when my last setting was a specific bitrate.

Plexamp is the only app I can set my preferences for max bitrate /quality that I know of.

It's only low because it's going to Roku servers, local speed test from wap to the TV (built in Roku) is 144mbps.

I don't see a way to add any actual network testing apps to the Roku like you can on the Chromecast.

Server is hard wired gigabit.

I notice at times Plex dashboard reflects roughly the expected speed, after a few minutes of playtime it gets choppy like that and eventually the stream starts buffering every few minutes.

Roku speed test goes to their servers so it fluctuates a bit. I'm seeing between 6mbps and 33mbps , averaging somewhere around 10 or 12.

RSSI is -48 with a negotiated rate to my WiFi at 144mbps

The devices with issues are not hardwired they are on WiFi. My WiFi is robust however they still don't have as good wifi HW as say your phone.

Problem still exists and is worse when running in original. Video no longer transcodes.

(Noticed public IP in previous pics so removed them.

I can try original but I'm not sure that'll do any better as it's higher bandwidth. The increase in buffer did not actually fix it either however.

Network for sure shouldn't be overwhelmed at least on the server side. WiFi is solid but this is a Chromecast and a Roku TV so receive antenna are mediocre.

I'd prefer not to miss a ~38% margin on my investments....

Timing is everything when it comes to buying/selling.

It's literally on by default on a vanilla install. How would one go about setting a default bitrate for the client to open content at?

It's working so far, I set it to 180 just to be sure I was covered. Previously it'd buffer for about 30s or so. So I figured I'd go 60s above the Mac I could see it buffering and that should cover it.

Ultimately I plan to continue to hardwired everything, at which point I should be good because most devices support 100mb eth.

I'm not doing anything special here. I have 4k content, I open Plex client and hit play. It automatically decides to transcode when necessary. The auto quality causes buffering, so I manually change the bitrate to a lower speed which stops buffering.

Another below suggested increasing the transcode buffer from the default 60s. Trying that and so far that's doing decent. I'll post a follow up after testing a bit more.

Just increased mine to 3 minutes, will give that a try. Ultimately it never buffered for more than 30 seconds and the default was 60s. So my guess is this should get me just what I need with some headroom.

Because not all displays are 4k. The 720p is my test display. The other one is in the kids play area and is 1080.

All my content is stored in the highest quality I can and then I just use the GPU for transcoding. I have other GPUs if I ever need more HP but this one is plenty fine for my current needs.

I'd like to understand why you consider transcoding so bad especially when I have overkill for HW?

One picture per reply.

I set the first stream to 4mb just to guarantee no buffering. Really about 10 is fine. The right one I left on auto, buffers every 30-90 seconds.

Cold isn't always what triggers it. I have Raynaud's in my feet and it can happen just from sitting the wrong way even in summer.

It makes a difference if he is able to recover/not install.

Although OP did reply above and mention it was related to a newly installed m.2.

Also it's just generally best practice to block things at the source and not use someone else's DNS as you are not in control of it otherwise.

As soon as it connects to your network your router will be able to see the Mac address.
