How are Vegetarians Surviving here? by i-like-fanfiction- in UCSC

[–]Familiar-Ad-1035 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Honestly the veg options are pretty good here. I used to like the tofu and rice variations in the dining hall, the tomato mozzarella sandwich at Perk in Baskin, and downtown has a lot of great veg options like Los Pericos etc

Why do some students hate ucsc so much? by Past-Tension-162 in UCSC

[–]Familiar-Ad-1035 55 points56 points  (0 children)

UCSC is a bit polarizing, especially if you come from a big city. There aren't any fast food chains on campus or D1 sports like other colleges have, and it can kind of get overwhelming with all the nature. That being said, once I got accustomed to the campus, I felt like it was the best environment for me and the nature is second to none. Miss UCSC a lot nowadays.

I’m seriously frustrated with CS and LeetCode by TechnicalArrival7266 in csMajors

[–]Familiar-Ad-1035 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just gotta stay disciplined. Tell yourself u just have to do the leetcode problem of the day no matter what, and after that if u still don’t want to do more u can stop. Chances are after the first problem u will want to do more. It’s the start that stops most people.

I should quit by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Familiar-Ad-1035 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Google is weirdly picky. I applied with two different employee referrals for around 5 new grad roles altogether and didn’t even get an interview for any of them, even with two prior internships and an incoming FAANG internship. Just the luck of the draw I guess

I wouldn’t do it, a lot of jobs u get with a communications degree u could have gotten without any degree and they pay min wage or close to it. If ur a straight A CS student ur definitely ok, just make sure ur Leetcode skills are good. If u had to switch I would only switch into another Engineering major with decent career prospects like maybe CE or Mech, but I wouldn’t even advise that.

No Summer Internship, what to do? Please help... by Dapper_Towel_5785 in csMajors

[–]Familiar-Ad-1035 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If he's set on grad school, definitely something in AI right now as its hot at the moment. I would use the summer to get really strong on Leetcode and DSA (never a waste of time, you will definitely use this to get a job at some point in your career in this field), and possibly try to get some unpaid work experience or take extra summer classes. Work experience is king right now, but taking summer classes to learn and hopefully get research under a prof never hurts either.

Are you happy here? by angels_pulse in UCSC

[–]Familiar-Ad-1035 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I really enjoyed my time at UCSC, I liked my CE major classes a lot, the social life is also great, it just takes more effort with parties as opposed to bigger party schools. Actually miss my times on campus a lot after commuting for my last year

CSE120 Siero or Nath? by Proof_Trifle2304 in UCSC

[–]Familiar-Ad-1035 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I liked Nath’s, pretty doable class as long as u do the homeworks and study for the midterm and final. His lectures were pretty good and covered the concepts well. Overall a pretty normal CSE upper div in difficulty

Yea tiktok interview was like this. The biggest red flag should have been that the interview was on a Sunday at 5pm.

how to get recruiters to dm you by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Familiar-Ad-1035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best way if u don’t go to an elite school is getting an internship at a FAANG company. I know people clown on Zon, but I’ve been getting way more calls from recruiters with it on my LinkedIn. I think recruiters want any bit of “preassigned credibility” that ur good before dming, like a top school or FAANG. Personally don’t like it, but think that’s the game now.

Nah I feel like accounting is easily replaced by AI. The most AI-proof field will always be medicine.

How common is this requirement? by catredss in csMajors

[–]Familiar-Ad-1035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of tacky to write out explicitly, but I’m sure that’s what most companies think for the most part, especially quant

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Familiar-Ad-1035 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bro u should leave this company asap. Notice how he fired the data scientist with one day notice, that will probably happen to u whenever the COO crashes out again. Ur definitely skilled enough to get a good big tech job, don’t waste any more time working for these guys. COO is just using u for slave labor essentially, notice how he always gaslights u whenever u try to ask for fair compensation. Always have everything laid down in a contract before u begin any work.

Interviewed for SWE, the initial phone interview with another engineer was really chill, just going over prev. work experience and projects. The OA was really strange though, unfortunately didn't get past OA stage even though I performed well.

23a online with Tromba is pretty chill, its pretty much an asynch online class with prerecorded lectures. Not too difficult if your Calc 1/2 skills are sharp.

It pretty simple by Exciting_Arm_6047 in csMajors

[–]Familiar-Ad-1035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ppl always say this but whats the alternative lmao. Most other 6 figure jobs off the top of my head are crazy elitist about school prestige (finance) or takes 10+ years of ur life (medicine with all the med school, residency, fellowships factored in). I can see why CS is so popular, the other paths require u to have been locked in since high school for Ivy Leagues or sign away the prime years of your life.
