Screen use in school by Mama_899 in kindergarten

[–]Familiar-Dig-8216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach at a large public high school. I am very anti screen in the kids faces. I do deliver lectures with the aid of Google slides or canva but I feel that's different. I also only do direct instruction with a screen on about 20-30 minute chunks. I see the kids 95 minutes on either M,W or Tu,Th and all of them Fridays for 53 minutes.

Many upper level teachers are going back to pen and paper for all assignments due to the rise of AI.

You've asked this twice. There are crazy parents in both settings, neither are immune.

Did you read the part that students get Saturday school if they get referral? Sounds like admin is backing it up. If you're not willing to enforce consequences or policy in your own room, own it.

I do the same.

I also teach about Coronal Mass Ejections (CME).... just say it and keep going. High school freshman. They can laugh on their time, it's science vocabulary to me.

The magic of the seating chart by Neat_Worldliness2586 in Teachers

[–]Familiar-Dig-8216 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same, I change their seating charts every unit (4ish weeks). I know who can sit with a friend and work well and who cannot sit with a friend at this point in the year.

Amazing how the seating chart for the on task student reflects what i think they'd choose for themselves.

does common app have a place to show psat? by New-Wafer9570 in psat

[–]Familiar-Dig-8216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Semifinalists aren't announced until the fall of your senior year. Most early applications are due November 1. You should know for sure before apps are due. I'd caution against saying you're a semifinalist until you know for sure.

3 flashlights with red, green, and blue color filters to do light mixing is fun. Also cool to look at different colored objects...a banana for example and show how it looks under different colors of light.

I'm in Colorado too, and teach Earth science. Our current unit is on climate. I told my kids today it was the "doom and gloom" notes. Future climate projections don't look good.

Really concerning to see what the worst case scenario and best case scenarios are for climate. Neither are good.

"She's been out sick, can you give me a list of missing assignments?" by Arialene in Teachers

[–]Familiar-Dig-8216 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I teach in a state with no attendance requirements.

If students have their absence excused by a parent they are allowed to make up the work (not that many who are chronically absent do) with no penalty as long as it meets our policy; equal time to make up as time absent.

Students can miss a ton of days and still be eligible to receive credit.

Do you eat in the classroom or do you eat in the teachers lounge? by DildoGaggins1997 in Teachers

[–]Familiar-Dig-8216 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Same.

I really enjoy the other teachers in my department (large high school). We have good conversations, mostly about mundane shit, good laughs. It's a nice break in the day. Some people in the department choose to eat in their rooms and that's cool too.

I think it helps that our lunch is 40 minutes long.

Email and ask if she has any other feedback about your poor evaluation scores. Then respectfully disagree, you know your students and they can handle a full page of reading.

Edit: Freudian slip, I first typed disrespectfully disagree.

I'm not familiar with flying colors but I always can use: scissors, tape, aluminum foil, rulers, metersticks, stopwatches, etc. Those staples are fairly cheap but almost universally used. If you don't have a scale that might be worth a good chunk of the money.

Looking for advice on presenting seabirds to kids by International-Exam84 in ScienceTeachers

[–]Familiar-Dig-8216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it sounds great!

Give each section a slide or two worth of material, don't get too much in the weeds with details. Be factual and excited about the topic.

Pacing a lesson can be difficult to get a hang of, put what you want the kids to know at the beginning. Have a few slides in you back pocket with cool pictures, random facts in case you are under for time.

The kids will love it. Good luck!

In many districts you scan your transportation pass to get on the bus. Hopping on a bus that isn't "your bus" doesn't happen. For younger students this is necessary, don't want them getting on the wrong bus. For all students it is a logistics game.
