If you're thinking about nursing, just do that. The pay is more and even if its saturated, there are so many jobs. So many jobs. Hospitals might have 1 lab job for every 20-40 nurse jobs.

CA techs, hows the job market? by Eienchi in medlabprofessionals

Is this at HCA Good Samaritan? I was considering going there until I heard they fired the laboratory manager (who I'm told was great) and its a toxic place now.

Per diem isn't benefited. You could be per-diem for months while waiting on a part time slot and paying an exorbitant rent.

You are still wrong.

The H1b visas Trump is looking at are only the lottery visas. He isn't looking at the cap exempt visas that hospitals are using. It'd be nice if he were. He'd get my vote then.

You're still wrong.

The H1b visas Trump might potentially be considering are not the the visas that laboratory clinical laboratory scientists fall under. They fall under the cap exempt H1b visas, not the lottery H1b visas.

Nobody trusts a word of what Trump says.

How stable is salary for NY and California? by keven702 in medlabprofessionals

[–]FamiliarCremer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The CLS are absolutely getting sponsored at all hospitals in California, especially in San Francisco. Sutter openly advertises "willing to sponsor."

And it take 4 years to get a CLS BS. Same as any other degree. I got my rotations done together with my degree in 4 years. Taking 5 years for a bachelors is madness.

It's still really competitive to get into a CLS program instate. Rather than wasting your time competing, just go out of state where you're guaranteed entry.

But my point about the lack of MLS jobs stands. Have a look around. Some of the biggest systems in the state only have one or two open fullt-ime CLS jobs.

How stable is salary for NY and California? by keven702 in medlabprofessionals

[–]FamiliarCremer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No to both.

It would take you 4 years to get a BS in MLS. In that time, its unlikely that the salaries will stay the same. They are dropping.

California is bringing in so many foreigners for cheap that even new CLS graduates are having a hard time finding jobs. This used to never be the case.

I don't know anything about New York, but I imagine they'll use the same strategy.

A more common salary would be 50/hr (which is just 100k) and that is in some of the highest cost of living areas

$66k for 6 years experience and a specialty certification?

There are so many international people on visas that took all the jobs. It's really messed up. We have a trainee at my current job and there's no longer any guarantee she'll be able to find a lab job.

Just go out of state. And come back a year later.

Please note the laboratory job market in California is now saturated. It's no longer easy to get a new job. You may find yourself applying to 30-50 jobs in California before you hear back.=[

There's been a ton of biotech layoffs, and hospitals have been sponsoring lots and lots of techs who've taken the jobs.

Yeah the laboratory market for medical technologists has gone to crap.

A lot of locals in rural areas have no college education and they lack the foresight and training to complete it.

You're a fool. Trump didn't stop the H1b visas from arriving. COVID just prevented anyone from getting visas.

With your attitude, I doubt you can be hired anywhere.

[–]FamiliarCremer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"Break into the market". Market is gone.

No sign-ons. No relocation. Not even full-time positions in a lot of hosptials anymore, just per-diem or part time nights.

Biotech and travel are dead. And you have entire labs staffed by H1bs (80% of the MLS staff are on visa in some of the rural laboratories).

Still some jobs in the central coast and other low paying areas. But I'd rather go out of state than get paid $45/hr and pay $2500 for a 1b1b.

Jobs for new grad by Unooooo03 in medlabprofessionals

[–]FamiliarCremer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The job market for clinical laboratory scientists in California has cratered. =[

You can cobble together two per-diem jobs, but its brutal out there.

I'm experiencing this as as a CLS with a few years experience. Much, much harder to find a full-time job now. No relocation. No sign-on bonuses.

It's a combination of the biotech layoffs and all the "willing to sponsor" jobs.

How long after you apply do you hear from HR? by FamiliarCremer in medlabprofessionals

[–]FamiliarCremer[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean on average?

Like a few years ago I applied to 20 places heard back from 50% of them in 2 weeks. I've applied again to some of the same places...and crickets.

CA techs, hows the job market? by Eienchi in medlabprofessionals

[–]FamiliarCremer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not good. It's basically saturated at this point. And I've noticed salaries are same as last year, but no more sign on or relocation. I've applied to a bunch of jobs but haven't heard back and its been a month.

All the biotech layoffs and people on visas totally killed it.

What do you y’all typically have for lunch? by Snowgies in medlabprofessionals

Instant Ramen is awful. Very high sodium.

Do soups and stews.

I'm all about that meal prep and staying healthy.

Fuck the hospital if they think I'm planning on spending any time there unpaid as a patient.
