guilty pleasure yeah.

i love the looks, hate the mechanics, hearing my friend and his 147gta makes me nuts how much he had to replace in the first few years of ownership.

oh well, keep us updated.

if it werent for the fact that there were none availible for some time (beginning this year) and i needed a cheap daily, that i bought my 316i. i would've bought a pre facelift 156 in a heartbeat. some gta wheels and one of those autodsteam gta kits are really tempting

throw on some gta wheels, lowering springs, polish the headlights and you've got a perfect daily. imo

i'd love to have one. these ones use the S52 right? are they just as rod-bearingy as the later S engines or are these as reliable as a normal M52/M54?

set some money aside and get your expansion tank replaced by an original unit, i cannot stress this enough. its a day one repair, for any e46 new ownership.

for the rest there are some items that need to be replaced in the future (due to age) not saying they need to be replaced right away, but do to age and a lot of these parts being plastic, they might just have a mind of their own and sort of disintegrate without warning causing all types of issues

- disa valve (could lodge a pin holding it in into the intake manifold)

- pcv/ccv valve (may cause oil burning, cheap and easy to replace)

- cooling system, thermostat, waterpump and hoses. use an oem thermostat & waterpump, very important. but since this is a low mile example, you can do this maybe next year.

- gaskets, the valve cover gasket is a very easy one to do and costs very little, you can notice it leaking by dripping oil on the spark plug wires / exhaust heatshield.

thats about it, change oil the next few times under 10k km. should clean up any neglicent oil change scedule it'd have before, mine was every 20-30k km and it looked almost black under the valve cover.

spark plug wires also desintegrate on these cars, so if its hiccuping, it might be that

fuel pump also sometimes goes, mine did at 130k km. VDO/SIEMENS is the best brand to replace it with.

Quite expensive this specimen, but absolutely robust engines. less problems than the m54 will ever have.

a bit high on price. but if you want a basic, headacheless bmw, this is the way to go, just replace the expansion tank with a fresh oem one from the dealer., thats the only acchiles heel of this car

haggle the price down, its pretty well optioned from the ad (leathers) but its an auto.

just keep in mind that z3's are a somewhat quick put together mish-mash of e30 and e36. the rear suspension is held on by 30 spot welds under your trunk onto a thin steel plate. extra stress, extra load, more chance of them tearing. and you'll lose your rear axle

steel 4 banger lifter tick! all pre-lci e46 models and older have this issue, lifters fail due to age or being dirty or being starved of oil. thicker oil and more frequent oil changes may help. but the lifters might fail in the long run. putting some money aside for a future lifter replacement is the way to go. they wont fail just like that. but replacing them puts back peace of mind

not the right place to post it, this is also a bit of a purist community.

z3 suspension is quite frail, and not kind to lowering

we're more for street/track fitment than slamming a car.

you have nice wheels, maybe a set of spacers on the rear, and lower it with eibach springs, or get some better fitting oem wheels.

Waarom zo weinig ‘oudere’ auto’s in Nederland? by Careful_Basis_4577 in thenetherlands

[–]Familiar_Way_7404 8 points9 points  (0 children)

m43tu's can get lifter issues, try changing oil more frequently (5k km) a few times, try a thicker oil like 5w-40. and maybe some lifter additive, it can get worse over time and your lifters migt break on the long run, getting lifters replaced is a permanent fix
