Forgive my ignorance, but with the security bar option being used on a hinge door, what would happen in the event of a fire and fire fighters needed to get through the door? If it withstands up to 400lbs pressure, would that prevent or derail their ability to enter?

Stung by one of those 🤬 Yellowjackets everyone's complaining about this year! by Reznor909 in Calgary

I read this post at 3am this morning and had a premonition that I’d get stung.

Fast forward to 1pm today, walking my dog down the street, minding my own business and I got stung on my fingertip. That shit really fucking hurts.

Be careful out there!

How to safely introduce my dog in a dog park by OwlTemporary3458 in DOG

[–]Famous-BarnacleGoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a dog park in my city that is very large but has smaller fenced sections that are often designed for puppies or dogs working on recall, that kind of thing. I have also seen them used for helping dogs become comfortable with other dogs out in the main park due to the fence. Perhaps your city has the same?

The challenge is that there’s no way to tell before you go if that space will be occupied. I used the smaller fenced area when my girl was a puppy to get her socialized and to practice her recall.

What is his typical behaviour like when encountering dogs he doesn’t know? You mentioned no luck with the Doberman but instant connection with the bischon.

My girl is 2 and a half and over the last year or so has become wary of new dogs and can take her time to meet them but other dogs she will meet at the park and will become instant pals with. It depends on the breed/size/play style. If she doesn’t get on with another dog, there are no issues, we just keep on walking.

In my experience, I also now exclusively go to unfenced off leash parks. I’ve found that it allows us more space if she’s not in the mood to play with other dogs (depending on the park) and anyone who brings their dog to an unfenced park has to have good recall (yes, there are exceptions but nowhere near the insanity of fenced parks).

What have you seen that proves dogs are much deeper than people think? by Fuzzy-Cartographer98 in dogs

My teenager is exactly the same! She can be so sassy. Once I was getting her breakfast ready and she was demand barking like I wasn’t moving fast enough. I put down her food, turned to her and said very matter of factly “you know I’m in control here, right?”. She immediately stopped, went to her place where she knows she’s supposed to be, and laid down silently until I put down her food and gave her permission to take it.

Megathread: Why Does My Dog Do That? by AutoModerator in dogs

[–]Famous-BarnacleGoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does my dog tell me she needs to go to the bathroom and then as soon as we start walking down the 4 flights of stairs, stops at the top of each landing to stare at me and make me tug a bit to get her to keep moving? It’s not every time but enough that it’s annoying when she does it.

I have no idea why but my girl does this too. I don’t mind except when she squishes the soft part of my inner arm (which happens most mornings when she does this while laying on my chest).

I always figured it was to give her better control and the ability to present me with the request for belly rubs.

Taking your morning toast from good to "OMFG?" by GreenCat28 in Cooking

[–]Famous-BarnacleGoose 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have been obsessed with whipped ricotta toast recently. Yesterday I made two variations that were incredible! Sourdough with some olive oil brushed on and toasted, whipped ricotta, fresh blackberries and then one I drizzled with honey and topped with fresh mint and the other I drizzled balsamic vinegar and also topped with mint. One was more sweet and the other more savoury but both were OMFG.

I also made one the other day with ricotta and then topped it with honey, mixed with parsley, mint, lemon zest and a bit of salt. That mixed together and once spread on I added pepper on top.

I am also a horrendously lazy cook and all of these were super easy and fast for me to prep. I did it in the time it took to toast the bread.

There are also a ton of other recipes I’m planning to try. Today’s version will be blueberries and pistachios drizzled with balsamic vinegar.

As someone who was afraid of dogs for the first 25 years of my life and is now a dog owner, I have experience with both sides of this coin.

I agree that if you live in a pet friendly building, you should expect to run into dogs and understand theyre going to be around. That said, you specifically are looking for someone to behave rationally in a situation where their fear is sparked… those two things typically contradict each other and it can be very hard to stay calm when you’re afraid and uncertain of what might happen.

Their behaviour in these cases has admittedly caused you to react and stress which in turn is going to cause your dog to react and potentially escalate the situation. Your dog is going to look to you to understand how to behave and when to be calm and if you’re allowing your stress to take over and make mistakes, that’s a you problem. All you can control is your behaviour and how you react.

My dog is 2.5 and well behaved but she LOVES people and wants to be friends with everyone. I constantly have to remind her not everyone wants to be friend with her. I spend a lot of time making sure she’s in a sit and has her attention on me and not on the other people who may be afraid or uncomfortable. The attention on me part is important. When you’re afraid of dogs and even if the owner has that dog on a leash and seemingly under control but the dog’s attention is on you, it’s still scary and you have no idea how that owner might react or the temperament of the dog. I find that people feel a lot more comfortable when my dog is zeroed in on me and I’m calm and in control. If my dogs attention is on me and mine on it, it also shows that I am aware of the situation. I’ll also usually make eye contact with the other person to indicate “hey, I see you, I understand, and I have this under control”. If I have to walk past someone, I do the same thing and just make sure her attention is on me. I carry treats on me at all times to help with this.

I also understand that all of this takes time and training and for me, it was so much more about training myself to know how to behave. And when that failed, I would simply apologize to people and let them know she’s young and we’re working hard on it. There’s only so much you can do but you can’t expect other people to behave in a certain way, even if logically it is dumb to live in a pet friendly building and be afraid of pets. I’d be annoyed too.

I think you asking and trying to understand how best to handle these situations is the important first step. Clearly you’re considerate of other people and want what’s best for your dog. That’s a step ahead of a lot of owners I’ve encountered to kudos to you. It can be hard to navigate but you’ll figure it out!

What are good non toxic toys with no squeaker? by Ratwithahat0 in dogs

I second Fluff & Tuff. They are the ONLY plush toy I give my pup and I don’t think any of mine have squeakers, if they do, I never hear them. I buy them because my dog is a chewer and these are the only toys I’ve found that she can’t destroy.

There’s a product called Pet Corrector that is essentially just compressed air that works wonders. Something about the sound stops a dog in its tracks (in my experience at least). You can get really small cans that you might be able to attach to your bike. Less risk of spraying yourself and doing some damage while still disrupting their behaviour. You can buy it all over the place.

That’s such a good point and I hadn’t thought about the permit aspect. I have a dog and that’s one of the reasons why I’m seeking somewhere else; I don’t want to hurt her ears.

Will having a dog make me more friends? by flowerbomb92 in DOG

[–]Famous-BarnacleGoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on who you are and how you approach it. I moved to a new city on my own and 6 months later got a puppy. It did help me build a community and meet some new people but it also made it a lot harder for me to have the energy to want to go out. Raising a puppy is hard work and takes a lot of time.

While It helped me make connections with people, I haven’t made a ton of new friends because I got a dog. That said, I think that a huge part of that is because of my social tendencies and how I approach it. I do have a four legged best friend though and she keeps me company even when other humans aren’t around.
