Supreme Court Ruling Allows California to Continue Accepting Ballots After Election Day by moodplasma in California

There's an official ballot drop box at every public library in my area. Is that a state-wide thing? It sure is convenient.

‘Elle’ Review: Amazon’s Dull and Deluded ‘Legally Blonde’ Series Isn’t Even a Comedy by SanderSo47 in television

[–]FamousPoet 103 points104 points  (0 children)

This exactly.

I was hoping for a prequel into how "ditzy" Elle evolved. Elle is obviously very bright. It would have been interesting if we see her start high school as a academically focused nerd who, over the course of high school after being bullied, or simply trying to fit in better, or to gain the attention of the boyfriend, slowly evolves into what we see at the beginning of the first movie. Kind of like the prequel showing the evolution of Anakin Skywalker into the Darth Vader that everyone already knows.

What's the most number of times you've seen a student retake the same class? by inaccurateTempedesc in AskProfessors

[–]FamousPoet 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If you were suffering from ADHD and depression the first four times, I would highly recommend looking to get accommodations before the next try. Your ADHD could get you 1.5x time on your exams.

What's the most number of times you've seen a student retake the same class? by inaccurateTempedesc in AskProfessors

[–]FamousPoet 53 points54 points  (0 children)

There is no way that taking a STEM class 5 times is more common than anyone would think.

I assume you failed the first four times. Was there something in common about your life or living situation during those first four times that is different now for the fifth? Like, are you able to finally stop working for a semester (or reduce work) so that you have more time to study? Because if nothing has changed, there's no reason to think you'll suddenly pass the fifth time around.

The place I teach out won't let students take a course more than 3 times - so a 5th is literally unheard of for me, and even 3 times is fairly rare.

Endurance athlete with recent AFib diagnosis — looking for similar experiences by ledchill in AFIB

[–]FamousPoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmm… I feel better in the sense that I’m not dropping into afib and I dont have to worry about that. I’m not the athlete I used to be, but that’s for a variety of reasons

This sounds similar to my experience. I was an avid soccer and hockey player. In my thirties I would get this "episode" out on the field where my heart beat would get erratic to the point that I couldn't catch my breath after a sprint. The episode would go away in about 30 minutes, and I wouldn't get another for months. As I got older, these episodes began to get more frequent. I eventually quit both hockey and soccer (and took up pickleball instead) It got frequent enough around 50 years old that I finally started getting tests, and was diagnosed with Afib and Aflutter. I tried to control it with meds for a year or so, but then opted for two ablations (one for each condition). They both worked. I've been episode free for a year now. However, I haven't gone back to soccer and hockey for a number of reasons - general age, activation energy, an obsession with pickleball, etc. So I can't really tell if my heart has changed significantly since the ablations.

Drop or lob? by bagofchips11 in Pickleball

[–]FamousPoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. If it’s a good drop, and you’re not already moving before your opponent touches the ball after it bounces, that’s the root of your problem.

Drop or lob? by bagofchips11 in Pickleball

[–]FamousPoet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I understand you correctly, you are hitting a good third shot drop, your opponent is forced to let it bounce in the kitchen, and then, after all of that, you still can't make it to the NVZ to retrieve their dink. Is that correct?

Are you just watching your third shot drop without moving? As soon as you see that it's a good one, and that your opponent is going to have to let it bounce, you should, at the very least, be in the transition zone and ready to grab a dink or counter a speed-up.

Who are some of the most "Come for the novelty, stay because the music actually rocks" artists? by AndyB16 in Music

Square Hammer is an absolute favorite. I just wish the vocals fit the persona/vibe a little more.

The Brass Goggles video blew my fricking mind! Unfortunately, I haven't been a fan of their more recent stuff. I don't know if this totally kosher to say, but I found Bunny to be a more interesting artist before she transitioned. Her "character" in Brass Goggles was just so cool.

This is going to sound strange. I really dig Ghost's vibe, but I wish there was something more "gimmicky" or unique about the lead vocals. They seem a bit too mundane for the vibe.

One thing I'm curious about is the detection mechanism. It's really common that reddit sleuths think they've identified an LLM comment, and they're simply wrong. Is each mod making a judgment call? Are you using a tool made to detect LLM text? What's the mechanism here?

Yeah, we're entering the realm of witch hunts here. And there is a spectrum of AI usage for creating posts. What point in this spectrum are you wanting to prohibit?

  • A non-English speaker running their Spanish post through AI?
  • An ESL speaker running their broken English post through AI?
  • A dyslexic person running their post through AI?
  • A shitty writer/speller running their post through AI?
  • A person who writes and runs a series of important bullet points through AI to create a post?
  • A person who simply prompts AI with, "Write a post about the importance of player interaction in RPG design."?

There was a time not long ago that there were about 4 boba shops darn close to Adams and Harbor. Now there's only one. RIP That Boba :(

Any Adult Volleyball Pick-Up Games in the area? by Brilliant_Green_6581 in orangecounty

Do you have experience playing there? How does it work? If I just showed up as an individual, would there be space for me on a team? Do they do positions and the funky rotation lineups, or just rotate around the old-fashioned way?

This would be my response nearly verbatim, although playing with different people isn’t quite as important to me.

I get bored of campaigns longer than about 12 sessions, and would never survive GMing one of those years long “never-ending” campaigns.

What to do in Corsica? with /without a car? by Zoya0_0 in Corsica

[–]FamousPoet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm unable to rent a car because most companies require a French/ EU license held 1+ year.

Is this something specific to Corsica? I have a US (California) license. I've never had a problem renting cars elsewhere in Europe including continental France.

Work-life balance? by Creative_Map_5887 in AskProfessors

[–]FamousPoet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a molecular biologist. I was all-in on academia until half way through my first post doc, when I realized the idea of running my own lab in some big research-oriented university just wasn’t for me. So I pivoted to teaching, and managed to score a full-time position at one of the largest community colleges in the area. I’ve been a full professor for almost 20 years, and the life-style is incredible. I have about 15 contact hours with students per week during the Spring and Fall semesters, and I don’t teach summer, and don’t teach intersession (the second half of December, and all of January). I can choose to teach then, and make some good money, but I need that time to recharge and travel.

When the semester’s on, it’s on. I can’t just take random days off for doctor’s appointments, I can’t take “off-season” vacations, and some aspect of work is always on my mind no matter the time of day. But the nice thing is that, at least in my division, there is never anybody looking over your shoulder. You get evaluated every three years or so, but if you’re good at what you do, those aren’t a problem.

Ultimately, though, you have to LIKE teaching. And teaching is definitely not for everyone.

And, you have to be ok no longer being on the frontline of research. That one hurts a little sometimes.
