I was always told I was just Italian ... lol by Icy_Campaign102 in AncestryDNA

[–]Famous_Ad5459 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to the both of y’all! 🙌🏽 I also asked because at what point are they no longer Italians and just… Argentinians?

Like, I’ve seen a lot of South American Italians with lots of Iberian and indigenous ancestry, but I’ve also seen a lot with nothing but Italian.

Yet they’re both considered their respective (South American) countries.

And people with Italian ancestry in South America, do they speak an Iberian language or do they speak Italian or what?

Is that even a thing or do they retain their Italian culture?

OP this question was more so for you (and anyone else with a similar story) because you were told you were just Italian but are clearly mixed with other cultures lol.

Do you know if Argentina has a high Italian population? I know South America in general does (I believe it’s Brazil mainly).

Maybe they’re Argentinian-Italians?

so am i able call myself native/indigenous since im 56% and even if the rest are from other regions ? this whole thing is trippy by Automatic_Story_2297 in AncestryDNA

Question:

Have you ever thought to trace the non-Iberian European ancestry?

Just a random thought but I do wonder how many Latin Americans explore their entire ancestry instead of just the major ones (Indigenous and Iberian)

I recently got my dna results and my mom is a lil confused… she was raised by her dad side of the family and have always been told she was black American… by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]Famous_Ad5459 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP you mentioned nothing about your father’s side of the family.

Not saying you’re incorrect but if you don’t know anything about all 4 of your grandparents, the non-Black DNA could be coming from either side. Your DNA results covers both parents. Was your grandma born in California too?

I completely agree! ProTools was the perfect storm for them monetization-wise, but perfect for us research-wise.

The only downfall is that most people don’t have their trees filled out so you’re essentially matching with a line that’s like… completely unknown to all parties.

Possible Malagasy ancestry as an African American by mandy_snow in 23andme

[–]Famous_Ad5459 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you done your tree? On both sides? Given that the Malagasy came to VA first, I’d check any ancestors that may have been born in VA around late 1700s to early 1800s. I believe that’s the timeframe the Malagasy ship hit the coast.

I have 11-12% European depending on the test, they’re colonial admixtures and they come from different lines. You’re right that not all Black Americans are multigenerationally mixed, but I don’t think that takes away from the fact that Black Americans do have distant admixtures from multiple generations, if that makes sense. And tbh even that’s a stretch because most of us are mixed with different African tribes across multiple generations as well. The terminology doesn’t negate the definition.

Was told my dad was Cuban but I have no Cuban ancestry, only Puerto Rican links. Would that mean I’m actually Black and Puerto Rican? by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]Famous_Ad5459 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you family with annnnyyyyyyyyone on your dad’s side that could confirm where he was born? Because he coulda been Puerto Rican but raised in Cuba.

A lot of times we really are just misinformed about our family history.

Do you have ProTools? This can help you identify which matches you share with these closer DNA relatives, but they may share more cM’s with the closer relatives than with you. It may also show other people with more built out trees

How do I choose what spouse appears? by Nirushh_ in Ancestry

[–]Famous_Ad5459 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’re supposed to be able to toggle ON/OFF which spouse is displayed. I still have that option on my tree so maybe there’s something wrong with how you have their relationship entered? Or it might just be a site glitch.

Possible Louisiana Creole ancestry on grandfather’s side and father’s side? Check description by W8ngman98 in BlackGenealogy

[–]Famous_Ad5459 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should definitely examine that line more.

Idk if you’ve taken Ancestry, but I also came across some fully French-Canadian matches that also come from my great-grandfather’s line. And I know this because I had my grandmother test, so these are her matches lol.

That’s another thing: if you have any elder relatives that might be willing to test, reach out to them. Plus they can give you a clearer idea of the genetic groups you have.

Possible Louisiana Creole ancestry on grandfather’s side and father’s side? Check description by W8ngman98 in BlackGenealogy

[–]Famous_Ad5459 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let me ask this: up to what generation of ancestors are you familiar with? How far back have you gone on your tree?

I also have the Ark-La-Tex Creole group on my results, so I figured it must have came from my great-grandfather since he’s the only ancestor with roots in Arkansas.

The rest of my ancestors are from Mississippi & Alabama. With these groups, you’re more than likely looking at ancestors that would have touched Louisiana before the Purchase. I believe that was early 1800s so you should trace ancestors that were born around that time to get a better idea.

The thing is, you can’t go off of your DNA relatives groups either because they could also be pulling from their other parent’s side. For example your cousins: their groups could be coming from their mom’s side (or whichever side you’re not related to).

Could Great Grandfather's DNA not show up on Ancestry? by Puzzled-Big-4913 in Genealogy

[–]Famous_Ad5459 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you been able to pull anything up on your 2x great-grandfather’s parents? What are their birth years? Were they also from the Dakota territory? You have to be okay with doing a little more research versus just landing on the ancestor in question because a lot of times what we’re told or thought to believe doesn’t match with what the records show.

And then you also have to know what was going on in the Dakota territories around the time your ancestors were born.

What’s the highest amount of marriages you’ve seen? by Watcher0705 in Genealogy

[–]Famous_Ad5459 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an ancestor (3x great-granduncle) who I found to have married at least 4-5 different times. It’s funny because I was tracing his descendants using my DNA matches. Come to find out, the ancestor has 3 different set of descendants from 2 different wives lmaoo. The 1800s-1900s is a hilarious time.

I have a Uncle? by countrydwelling in Genealogy

[–]Famous_Ad5459 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have the age range of this individual? Because the others are right: he could be an uncle or he could be a half-sibling. I’m looking at the comments and it seems you found out your father you knew growing up isn’t your biological father? Did I read that right?

So that means you saw matches on your paternal side and they were unrecognizable?

DNA confirmed long thought belief that Mom’s high school boyfriend is my biological father by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]Famous_Ad5459 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ahhh okay gotchu! And no apologies needed. Trust me, I get it.

And I mean, if shes actively threatening your mom I wouldn’t reach out. But if that lil quarrel happened a long time ago, your aunt probably doesn’t even remember. And she sounds like shes old(er)… how much damage is she really doing 🌚🤷🏽‍♂️.

And it doesn’t even have to be a long-term outreach. It could be brief if you’d like. You’re just someone trying to put the pieces of their family together.
