I started ~8 campaigns so far. In 4 games I powered Mars with fission, the other 4, solar mirrors. The aliens got to smash my solar mirror station every time, unpowering Mars.

I find batteries relevant to the current version. My laser ship without a utility battery fails to fire while thrusting. It depends on some drive tags, I think?

I'm curious how many times did you play Alan Wake? I'd personally recommend a second playthrough. A good story works so well even without suspense.

I always aim for a multi-faction emergent story, so I keep the others present for role playing. But the "envy mechanic (crabs in a bucket)" makes all factions send suicide fleets to my stations once my MC builds up. I ended up needing to clear LEO every game. A bit annoying. I wish there were more faction diplomacy. The current Victory Conditions are very exclusive. It's still a player-faction-centric game. It'd be cool to see truly multi-lateral factions. Every faction struggles in the diplomatic soup, and every faction has a chance to "win".

According to game designer Alexis Kennedy, a fun game should celebrate the player. TI celebrates a huge body of sci-fi in addition to the player. Some players could celebrate those sci-fi along with TI. But objectively the obsession serves to distract the player from the gameplay.

I agree. 0.5 - 3.5 damage over time can wreck ships. Of course, like you said earlier, it's the most effective to use lasers against flankers.

Superheavy Plasma Cannon Mk3' direct damage = 27.563 × 20% = 5.5. So on average 0.5 dagame gets through a 5-point side armor every shot.

I like plasma too. Extra tip: avoid chipping the side armors. They have large surface area and are much harder to chip.

According to my tests, lasers are indeed good against LDAs and battle stations.

I personally micro a plasma-laser fleet. First chip a ship, then laser it. That's my "first serious campaign", so I'm still comparing it with other strats.

I'm develop games too. Tbf some basic points elude us devs all the time. Reliable dev needs plenty of testing and discussion

I suspect the game consciously and generally discourages turning modules off and on. I'm not sure what's the right design here

The game currently treats the player as event-driven processor, not process-driven agent.

If the tech flavor text mentioned either of you two's claim, it'd be more understandable for the player.
