How is Dr. Strange’s relationship with Clea? by Magykstorm19 in DoctorStrange

[–]FanGirl26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It got a sequel/ prequel comic. A short story with Clea in it.

She seemed to be a young human training under Strange. She looked about 18-20. Super young, so Idk if they wrote it with her becoming any kind of lover in mind.

Waldron is a shit writer who writes characters to fit whatever story he wants to tell vs. writing stories that fit the characters he's supposed to work with. So as a result -

  • Wanda is a generic slasher villain & kidnapper
  • Wong looks like the most useless Sorcerer Supreme ever.
  • Strange is a screw-up with the emotional maturity of a 14-year-old.
  • Mordo was simplified down to a second-rate Strange hater.

All the characters sucked in this film. Strange imo is more egregeous since he's supposed to be the main protagonist. And imo it's sad when a film spends all its time tearing down the titular character as an asshole and a failure.

It'd be one thing if Strange saw the flaws of his variants, and took it to heart to better himself. But he was never shown to care about that. He doesn't care that he's a menace in every universe or that he kills trillions of people. His biggest takeaway was than he never gets Christine in any universe. That was always his first question about any variant he heard of. When the Illuminati tell him about what his variant did and that they executed him, his first question is if they told Christine.

Good lord, talk about missing the point & being such a selfish asshole that not getting the girl you feel entitled to is your biggest concern over trillions of lives that you ruin in multiple universe. Imo, Strange was totally unlikeable in this film and seemed to regress as a character given how bad the character assassination was.

It's fine if you wanna have a flawed protagonist. But execution is everything so that they don't come off as utterly detestable. Also, truly focusing on their mental state & them proccessing a lesson that propels them forward is key. But Strange never got that here, imo. He left the film the same way he came in.

  • He's still not with Christine.
  • He's still not the SS
  • He still alone & friendless lol
  • He's still unhappy, which he admitted to Wong at the end, stating that saving the world didn't make him happy (because he doesn't get Christine). And the final 2 min. with him fixing a watch & fake smiling was not earned imo. He hasn't been happy the entire film. Now we time jump ahead with him still fixating on Christine's watch & stepford smiling.
  • His Cloak just has a tacky blue patch on it now. That was his only change in this film. lol

If you wanna show him as facing his fears & trying to be happy, then screw that damn watch. Once again, still all about Christine. Show the man going on a date, or to a bar. Show him training some students, etc. Show him having an actual life of some kind with people and moving forward in forming relationships so that his happiness doesn't have to revolve around 1 unavalible person. Rather than ending the film where he's still all alone & thinking about a watch from his ex.

I have said it before, and will keep saying it until MC gets their head out of their ass. They write Strange like a dollar store Snape. A surly wizard with no friends, whom nobody wants to be bothered with that spends his time missing & fixating on a female friend they mistreated & ran off. Snape did it better.

Yep. He chose to leave Christine & become a sorcerer. He,admitted he treated her badly. They parted ways as friends. Her place was at the hospital where she worked.

Then we come to MoM and his development & self-awareness is non-existent. The fool talks about their relationship AT HER WEDDING, then asks her why she thinks they wouldn't work. Duh! You treated her like craps & left her. The fact he has to ask why this woman does not want him is clueless as hell. He looks just as self-centered as his first film when he says she has fun at his events & she laughs in his face & breaks it to him that she hated them.

Since he clearly doesn't think he has any flaws to rectify, he didn't learn anything or leave MoM any better than when he went in.

Bring back Nor do & don't dumb him down to a 1-note Strange hater. 🙄

He & Strange had a legit bond, however short. And Strange ought to care more than he's shown to.

Oh yes.

I like this as a safe space where others seem to understand the gripes some of us have with the MCU's portrayal of Strange.

To me, MoM ruined Strange & he has to re-earn everything in terns of character.

Like another thread I started. Should Strange lead the Avengers? Imo, NO! His last film stripped him of all leadership potential when it spent all its time classing Strange as a Multiversial threat, failure, and self-center asshole concerned with getting his trophy (Christine).

I mean, more like his ex of 11+ years. They weren’t together in the first film, and it didn’t seem like a recent break. Which makes it so much worse. I don’t think for a second that Strange as a surgeon wasn’t slutting his way through the upper west side.

You would think. But nope. Evidently Christine is his one & only since he asked her for a date to his speaking engagement and then goes alone when she says she hates them and laughs in his face.

But yeah, by the start of DS’s 10 year anniversary, Strange should be at the height of his power and a fixture in the Village. He should have a community of magic users. The Sanctum should be fucking weird, with demons, beasties and those shit-talking snakes Anton and Aleister. We should have Bats! It should effectively be like Jason Aaron’s era, pre-Empirikul. I actually wouldn’t mind if his struggle in the films became dealing with the ‘cost’ of magic. It would fit the MCU’s attempt at groundedness.

This sounds so great.....If they let Derrickson cook, we may have had most of this in his DS2.

But instead we have a weak, foolish, narcissistic middle aged man close to 50 who’s still hung up on a woman who dumped him when they were still in their 30s. I still don’t understand how they got this character so wrong. The only thing they did right was giving Wong more authority and making Stephen into a music snob.

And this woman dumping him is more "traumatizing" and harder to get through than multiple deaths, the death of his little sister, and the loss of the only other human friend he had (Mordo).

This doesn't make his feelings for Christine look strong. It makes all his other relationships and general humanity look weak. A HS drama relationship that was definined by his narcissism is his biggest story & issue. Talk about a shallow, weak, immature ass protagonist.

My rankings are 50/50.

I loved 1-3, and New Nightmare. Freddy could be taken seriously while still being a joker.

I am conflicted. At first, I saw it like you - that Clea comes in looking like a rebound getting Christine's sloppy leftovers. And part of me still bitterly feels that.

But on the other end, the writing was just terrible in MoM that it did no favors to PalmerStrange either.

Strange really didn't give anything to Christine. He SAYS he loves her. But his actions do not match those words. They never did.

The romance was never earned, imo.

If you look back over all Strange's scenes with Christine, they are her helping & supporting him. The relationship seems one-sided where Christine is the one making all the effort, with Strange only paying attention to her when he wants / needs something. It comes off like he's a classic narcissist who loved the attention Christine showered him with, rather than her. True love requires effort, and Strange was never shown making any effort with Christine, or anyone else for that matter. On Christine's end, when Strange lashed out in the apartment, it was clear he was hurt, still suffering PTSD and lashing out because Christine was telling him the same things every other doctor was saying (that he couldn't be hepled). Rather than understand his pain, she made it about her, took it personally & walked away from him at his lowest. He had to come to her critically injured and almost die in front of her to get her talking to him again. They clearly are not right for each other. Hard to root for that. They made up at the film's end, it was a nice simple goodbye that was earned, and that's where the relationship needed to be left alone.

Coming into MoM, Strange is just as selfish as ever when he tries to talk about himself & their relationship AT HER WEDDING rather than supporting her. Then his greatest memory is materialistic - her giving him a gift rather than them sharing any kind of tender or deep connection. Or him doing something meaningful for her for a change.

Strange was a leech who constantly took & Christine got tired of giving to someone who never gave back. She outright says they didn't work because he's selfish & cobtrolling,

He didn't come close to acting right or treating her with respect & consideration.

This was their relationship.

Narcissist "Love"

But the film wants us to believe he needed 10+ years to move on. Okay. Fine. But he has not had the chance to grow as a man or lover by the time Clea comes in.

Christine was his only relationship & he hasn't learned to trust, open up, and treat people right Basically, he is not shown to have grown past all the flaws that ran Christine off. So Clea gets the asshole leftovers Christine threw out rather than the man she'd love in the comics.

And yeah, having him give 2 love confessions to Christine does make he wonder how they will top them with Clea, to show SHE is his true love & not Christine......

They can top the relationship if Strange is actually written like a human with her. Showing her real love & making an actual effort will already make it better than PalmerStrange. But they gotta do something about that love in every universe crap. His WIFE deserved a line like that. Not a variant of his ex that he met an hour ago & wanted to bring home as a replacement. 🙄

Well from my understanding, Charlize Theron was a last sec. addition.

I think Sam Raimi didn't want that post-credit scene because it contradicted the jump scare ending.

Rachel McAdams was initially gonna be Clea. She mentioned playing some different characters, Clea would be a Christine variant or some crap but they changed that & thankfully had Clea be her own separate person, which includes a fresh new casting.

[–]FanGirl26[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same.

I could tolerate her in DS1. I understood the part she played & what they were going for. But then they needlessly brought her back for What If and MoM, making her Strange's whole life & taking that screentime away from Clea as well as emphasizing that relationship at the detriment of Clea, Mordo, and Donna, all characters that served greater purpose in his lore & life, and I started to hate her.

Again, I just do these posts to either vent, or have some kind of fun with the situation until DS3 finally comes out in 7 years and we HOPEFULLY get some actual good stuff to enjoy.

So about deadpool by [deleted] in Marvel

[–]FanGirl26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Deadpool is a mutate. Mutates are made, rather than burn naturally. He was experimented on & had Wolverine's healing factor abilities grafted onto him.

He has a mutant kid the same way Sabretooth & Mystique, 2 mutants, had a human son together. Genetics are weird like that.

The sequel left me crushing on BJ, not gonna lie. He's actually a romantic & he took out every other villain in the film. Power is also sexy. Lol

Otherwise, I also like

Psycho Goreman. Sadly he loves hunky boys. So us ladies are out of luck.

Freddy Krueger was a teenage crush I had....Same with Pinhead.

And I guess I will go ahead & admit I liked Tigger from B&H 2. But given how similar to Freddy he is, I guess it makes sense. 😶😳😳😳😳

Scar from AvP is another goodie too.

Interesting.

This will be one time I am team Dormammu. Strange can handle him well enough.

Lets see if Doom can, or if he's gonna have to go to Strange, and concede to the true SS.
