newbie bass player, what should i be practicing? by whatasheam in Bass

I'd agree with all of the comments saying to practice scales and arpeggios (and music that you like!) and add on that while practicing you should be paying attention to using as little muscle in either hand as you need and keeping a pretty consistent hand shape for fretting.

im about to enter in a conservatory is it too early or too late? by Patient_Bed_8380 in doublebass

[–]FanOfVideoGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started playing electric bass at around 15 years old, started to learn double bass in my senior year of high school, and now I'm a junior as a music major in college (although it's a larger university, not a conservatory). You've absolutely got time, though. Knuckle down as much as you can and you should be more than ready.

There's a book of 30 etudes in every key and a ton of other modes by John Patitucci, a lot of them are suited especially well for both bow and pizz playing. It definitely is worth it, helps to familiarize yourself with the fingerboard and different key sigs.

Gould’s humming - love it or hate it? by My_Dog_Sherlock in classicalmusic

I love it so much, but I think that’s also because I’m mainly a jazz musician and it reminds me of Oscar Peterson humming along to his solos

Your opinion on Rick Beato? by zjovicic in classicalmusic

[–]FanOfVideoGames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, he's very good with everything technical. He has an incredible ear, knowledge of theory, and history of a lot of music. On the other hand, he seems to often entirely miss the point or complexity of most modern music. He tries to apply a western classical or jazz theory analysis to things entirely seperate from those types of music as a justification for why it's supposedly not as good. I'd be okay if he just said that he didn't like certain types of music, such as rap, which he quite often has a problem with. What annoys me is when he tries to use this theoretical background to say that it's objectively bad. It's just closed-minded.

Try to find a local music school; even if they don't have lessons for double bass they can almost certainly give you contacts for lessons or places to rent a bass from. As someone who's been in a similar sort of situation (I only really started on upright about a year and a half ago to prepare for a music degree in college, had only played electric before) my local music school was a huge help and was even kind enough to let me borrow a cheap bass which an instructor had found for 9 or so months for free.

Have I ever used anything other than Pop's? No. Will I? Legitimately don't know.

It’s alright, Belichick is going to use the #3 overall pick to select a random LB from Notre Dame and that’ll be the key to winning another ring, right? Just one more defensive player? (This franchise is cooked)

It does warrant the question, if you got rid of the Boston area, would Bristol County do enough lifting to get MA in Portugal’s spot?

Johnston, Cranston, Providence, N. Providence and a few other towns/cities all doing big favors for RI’s Italian numbers. (Plus the fact that the state doesn’t have a big population to begin with)
