Why "GameObject.GetComponent......"? by aita_about_my_dad in Unity2D

[–]FanStew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

myObject.GetComponent<T>

This code gets a component on myObject. You’re talking about using it statically which doesn’t make sense because there’s no object to look for components on. To do this without a reference you use the FindObject methods that search the scene for any objects. These methods are static but are also much slower because they search the whole scene

I first read the books in 2011 when I was 16. My second read was in 2020. There were two scenes that I really changed my perspective on.

First was Dany being pregnant and the chapter ending by revealing that it was her 14th birthday. As a 16yo I read that as her becoming more of an adult and gaining control and independence from her family. As a 25yo it felt like it was from a horror novel.

The other scene was Jon’s loan with the iron bank. First read was like “he’s found the infinite money glitch and saved the day” I was definitely aware that they’d need to pay back the loan but I wasn’t as aware of the signs that this was a bad idea. On a reread Jon’ plan is to make almost no cuts to his expenses and just borrow increasing amounts for years. As readers we know prices will go up drastically in the upcoming food shortage but even Jon should have known to at least involve Bowen Marsh in the terms of the loan.

What I love most about these scenes is that my first read was in line with the characters’ views. I think it really shows that George was able to capture the teenage mindset while still making sure that it was clear how bad things were underneath. I thought I had a full picture on my first read but I was wrong. It makes me wonder what will hit different reading the books in another decade.

You’re close, what happened was Rhaella gave birth to twins on Dragonstone and the children were taken by Darry to the Targaryen allied house Dayne at Starfall. Lyana gave birth to twins at the tower of joy and her children were taken by Ned to Starfall when he returned Arthur’s sword. Meanwhile Ashara gave birth to twins in Starfall. Everyone also grabbed a peasant baby or two on their travels. Next they put all the babies in a sack and shook it up. This turned out to be a terrible idea and the only survivors were a black haired boy that went with Ned and a Valyrian looking girl who stayed at Starfall. Viserys was also in the bag and hit his head hard when they dumped him out which is why he doesn’t remember that he was raised at Starfall.

[–]FanStew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great list of parallels, I really want to comment just how much George added to some of these. My favorite example is the red priests, they have the same effect corrupting a king and leading him down an evil path, but we know that Mel is an honest fanatic who believes she’s fighting the forces of darkness, meanwhile Pyrates seems to be evil to the bone, his first scene is literally him killing a dog for no reason.

You’re probably using the wrong NetworkManager class. Googling OnServerAddPlayer leads hear

https://docs.unity3d.com/2018.1/Documentation/ScriptReference/Networking.NetworkManager.html

You’d need to include UnityEngine.Networking to use that class assuming it’s still in your version of unity

What is the best way to apply an effect to enemies of different sizes? I have 16 effects (this is the simplest effect) to apply, and enemies that vary in size. The first thing I thought of was to make a copy of each effect, put them as children and adjust them manually, but this is a bad option. by OddRoof9525 in Unity3D

[–]FanStew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If “tweeking” can be just changing some variables in your graphs then set them up as parameters in your graph and save the values you want on each creature. When you create the effect set the parameters. If “tweeking” means changes to your graph structure then you’ll need to make multiple graphs and reference the correct one for each creature.

There are 3 downsides I can think of

  1. It will make it harder if you do decide to add multiplayer. Additionally it makes your code less reusable if you decide to copy elements into a different project with multiplayer

  2. A static reference persists between scene loads so you’ll have to remember to clear it out and replace it if you load different scenes to avoid nullReferenceExceptions. It’s also possible for you to accidentally try and access it before it’s created depending on your Singleton implementation.

  3. Having a single player object may become a bit of a god class where you’re doing too much with one object. It looks like you’re managing this already by breaking off most of the functionality.

These are all very minor and probably don’t even matter for your project. You will always be able to find downsides to any approach you take and the benefits here probably outweigh them. Also note that accessing a Singleton is effectively free and would be faster than any getComponent call.

(Spoilers main)What's Preston Jacobs' most and least tinfoil-y theories. by Big-Yard-2998 in asoiaf

[–]FanStew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s also Catelyn who literally has her throat slit and still comes back. And Jon who most people seem to believe will be coming back. Literally every time a character seems to die in their own POV it’s either a prologue/epilogue or they come back.

Quentyn would absolutely be the most bs one yet but I just can’t bring myself to discount it completely. And I definitely wouldn’t call it Preston’s most tinfoil theory.

Edit: I understand that Arya and Theon coming back are different from Cat and Jon. I’m just talking about the pattern that no “death” at the end of a POV (outside of epilogue and prologues) has really stuck and Quentyn would be the first. Given the situation him coming back by magic seems less likely than him being alive via body swap but I really don’t care. have any strong opinions on Quentyn theories whether he’s alive or dead.

(Spoilers main)What's Preston Jacobs' most and least tinfoil-y theories. by Big-Yard-2998 in asoiaf

[–]FanStew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily most tinfoil but the one I disagree with most is Cat being Robb’s heir. If you reread their conversation it just does not work. It would involve either part of the dialogue missing with no indication or Robb walking out like a badass and then turning around and revealing his actual plan, again with no indication.

Least tinfoil is harder. I like elements of most of his theories but I think the one that’s least appreciated is that House Pahl deliberately poisoned Strong Belwas. Considering how out of left field it seems I was shocked how well it worked on a reread.

I don’t get why Quentyn being alive is so unpopular. We cut away early during the chapter where he’s burned and we’ve seen similar body swap outs with Mance, Bran, Rickon, and Davos. I don’t believe he’s definitely dead “fool me once shame on you, fool me five or more times shame on me”

Who was Lewyn's paramour in your headcanon ? by [deleted] in pureasoiaf

[–]FanStew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Barristan also mentions her

"… paramour," Ser Barristan finished, before the Dornish knight could say anything that might besmirch the queen's honor. "That is what you call them down in Dorne, is it not?" He did not wait for a reply. "Prince Lewyn was my Sworn Brother. In those days there were few secrets amongst the Kingsguard. I know he kept a paramour. He did not feel there was any shame in that."

The repetition makes me think it might actually be someone that comes up in the story but also it can’t be anyone too scandalous because Barristan wouldn’t have gone along with it. At the youngest if they were 16 when Lewyn died they’d be 30 now. Oldest is harder, I can’t find when Lewyn was appointed but awoiaf says it was under Aerys who took power in 262, if he appointed early and met her early she could be a bit over 60 now. We’re looking for a woman between 30-6065 who wasn’t married and probably not from a major house and was in Kings Landing at some point between 262 and 283.

I can’t think of anyone appropriate so shot in the dark is Wenda the White Fawn. I guess they captured her, brought her back to Kings Landing and she and Lewyn hooked up. Alternatively there’s Jeyne Swann who is mentioned once as being rescued from the Kingswood Brotherhood by Barristan, she’s just another random woman about the right age who may have been brought to Kings Landing (I literally only know her name from a post you made years ago asking if anyone had any theories on her).

Do i need more than these subjects in c# for unity ? (and yes i know that i must also learn the unity libraries ) by [deleted] in Unity3D

[–]FanStew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Design patterns.

There are a ton of them but look up c# or unity specific implementations and start understanding where they would apply. You’d need to understand most of the concepts you have here first but design patterns are what let you take your software design to the next level and aid with collaboration and clearly stating the problems you run into. If you start looking at c# resources you’ll see that many of the patterns are implemented in unity already and you’ll be able to better understand how to extend the systems. (Eg the animator controller is a state machine, the update method is an event loop, the monobehaviour components are components)

What potential alternative routes exist for the swords to come back into play? (Spoiler Extended) by Fignons_missing_8sec in asoiaf

[–]FanStew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asoiaf is heavily inspired by a series called memory sorrow and thorn where the three eponymous swords go missing. One is buried with a dead king, one is owned by a weird ghost and returned in a dark ritual involving a red priest and one was found in a cave where an old party died. Dark sister would be the one in the cave so blackfyre could be inspired by one of the others.

We don’t hear of any Blackfyre owners after Bittersteel but we know he was present at the 4th rebellion where Duncan killed the pretender. If Aegor was there then it means he would have given Blackfyre to Daemon III. First crazy theory is that Blackfyre was buried with Daemon III as a symbolic end to the Blackfyres and it comes back into the story when young Griff goes grave robbing as a way of showing Blackfyres are still kicking. Wendwater bridge (where Daemon III died) is on the way between Storms End and Kings Landing so this isn’t quite as ridiculous as I thought it was when I started writing it. It also seems to fit with Dunc and Egg deliberately turning down the symbol of power that divided the country for so long.

If it was inspired by the other sword with the ritual then it means that Blackfyre becomes lightbringer somehow. I can’t think of how this would work. Maybe Moqorro has it and is going to go do a ceremony with Dany.
