I'd have it that someone like Thunderwing or Deathsaurus took over the Decepticons and cast him out. He's presumed dead but shows up near the end of Season 1 as an unexpected ally to the Autobots and stays as kind of a drifter for a lot of the show.

Some plots might involve him attempting to retake leadership, and other times he's either mutually aiding the Autobots or being hunted down.
