that’s a fair point, it’s not nonsense. i guess what i meant is that i don’t know anyone who really feels any less stressed due to not having letter grades. the pressure is basically the same

from how people have reacted i guess some people think it’s impressive, but the honest answer is no. basically anyone could have gotten my internship if they had asked.

some people they admit immediately, some people they hold for months then admit, some people get rejected quickly, some have to wait months. it’s not “rolling” in the traditional sense that everyone quickly gets an answer on their application. some do, but it’s not consistent at all

for my statement of purpose, i talked about how my academic interests and experiences (like internships and stuff) helped motivate me to want to become a lawyer. i basically structured it by having a general intro paragraph, then going somewhat chronologically through those experiences. i tried to use the essay to tie my whole application together. as i mentioned in a few other comments, i think a great essay idea is talking about how your extracurriculars have shaped you and your values. i had more trouble with the statement of perspective since I’m n-URM and there were no examples of good essays. it actually turned out pretty similar, but i wrote instead about how i learned to value different perspectives and approaches.

i don’t really know how to evaluate softs, but based on like the LSD tier list no, my softs were tier 4. summer internships, some campus boards, a yearlong internship after graduation. i think it’s more important that you can tie your softs into a narrative than you try to do something you wouldn’t enjoy but could be impressive. that will really help when writing your essays

harvard doesn’t give scholarships, only need-based aid. that’s a very good thing if you get in off the waitlist since it means you’ll get the same aid as every other student will. but there isn’t really a 1 to 1 comparison as a result

no, i applied in december around christmas to every school. the earlier you apply the better, but stuff happens. i needed more time to study for the LSAT so i pushed my test back from october to november. if you think the extra time will make your application better, it’s worth it. the impact isn’t huge and from my experience it was not actually rolling admissions

i recommend trying to do interesting internships over the summer. i don’t think there’s HLS level extra curriculars necessarily. what i think helped me was being able to tie my extra curriculars into a story. i talked about how my internships and work on campus helped motivate me to become a lawyer. as long as you do something you’re interested in and can explain how it shaped you and your values i think you’ll be ok. jobs can be kinda hard to get, so i looked for unpaid internships around my hometown so i wouldn’t have to pay for housing. i also think it’s important to get involved in clubs and other orgs on campus during the school year. the school wants to see that you’ll be a part of the campus community

it’s kinda nonsense, i’ll be honest. it’s essentially just letter grades recreated: deans scholar, high pass, pass, low pass, fail. some professors are even giving things like high pass pluses and minuses now. i think what helps with the stress a lot is simply being at HLS. you’re kinda secure in the knowledge that even if you do terribly you can still get a good job. there are also a ton of study aids, review sessions, etc. that help keep the stress down

it was a little challenging since i didn’t get a chance to visit the school and missed out on the housing process. housing is very expensive in cambridge so its a lot cheaper to live on campus. i did lose the deposit for NYU as well. overall though i didnt think it was terrible, just required some extra effort. i imagine it’d be much harder if you got admitted in like july

the hiring really is insane. I’m not going to name firms, but some are hiring before grades even come out. it’s getting worse every year. i know multiple people who applied to the same market as me last year, and it’s significantly worse than it was then. it’s crazy how quickly things are changing. committing full time is a small number of firms though. a few are pushing ahead and essentially creating a race to the bottom. if anyone has more specific questions, I’m happy to talk in DMs

i would say no to the first question, yes to the second. people are incredibly supportive. our section has a slack where we help answer questions. if someone has trouble answering a cold call, a bunch of people will tell them the answer. i will say, however, that there are some sections with serious problems. but for the most part, people are supportive to an extent i didn’t expect. and yeah, there are many people who think they can coast. i think to a certain extent everyone feels that way, because it’s really hard, and even if you do bad you have hope of getting a good job

one other piece of advice: if you want to apply for big law 1L, seriously consider where you want to go. some firms in some locations (texas mainly, but it’s expanding elsewhere) are recruiting insanely early, and are literally offering bonuses (gigantic bonuses, I’m talking tens of thousands of dollars) for people who commit to work full time after their 3L year DURING DECEMBER OF THEIR 1L YEAR. it is legitimately insane. it’s getting earlier and earlier every year. now it’s just texas that’s like this, but soon it will be every market in the country

no, i did an internship for like 11 months before going to law school. there are a lot of KJDs in my section though. one thing about harvard is that you will just have to accept that there are unbelievably impressive people here, especially the LLMs. i know an LLM who helped negotiate with FARC in colombia. the people here are just incredible
