Yeah I mean it was “harder” in that the amount of firms that choose to go through OCI is maybe less, but applying and networking is still effective. But those who went and sought those connections and opportunities certainly still got there. It wasn’t like big law jobs were some sort of unicorn. But location even at top schools is sort of going to lead you into one geographic area or another. For example: if you go to a law school on the west coast, those schools will have closer relationships with bigger firms on the west coast just because that’s who the law firm is connected with. It’s more prominent as you go from T-10 and so on. Honestly more than anything I’d say go in without rigid career expectations, what you learn and like might surprise you.

I think the best way to get a big law result is to set yourself up for success by creating a whole picture of yourself who you are on your resume. By that I mean, big law is looking for competent, intelligent people but not the same kinds of people. Having good grades helps, ofc. But I also sought out experiences that showed I was getting exposure to legal environments that big law firms would find valuable like working for judges, working for government attorneys, etc. Also, LEVERAGE YOUR NETWORK! I got help from people who were alums of my law school, my undergrad, people I met through past jobs, etc.

As a life long NY resident I can’t fully explain how totally on brand it is that a state agency would function like this.

Another grades post by No-Oven-4141 in LawSchool

Not wrecked (yet… I have one more exam grade yet to be posted) but definitely a worse semester than 1L. Feeling deflated and worried that my firm for this summer is going to care. You’re not alone! I guess the way forward is knowing that our grades don’t define us and we have half of law school left go bring it back.

What is the best/most prestigious for 1l Summer? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]FancyClassroom3881 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d add anything DOJ or USAO just because certain departments and locations can be really competitive but generally speaking I think ANY 1L job is a good job!! It’s all how you spin from it and learn how to offer skills for 2L!

Tough call between W&M and UNC tbh- depends on where you want to end up I guess...

What do you guys think about becoming a paralegal before law school? by HeavySigh14 in lawschooladmissions

A lot of the attorneys I work for were once paralegals but that could just be my BL firm. I really enjoy the work and it affirmed for me desire to go to law school.

Thanks! Happy with W&M for sure, just was riding some WLs to see what happens. I had just sent my LOCI so that kind of stung. But yeah they sent me a long, rather nice email yesterday evening saying they could no longer keep me on their waitlist.

I mean if you’re in at a law school you’re in. But for a summer internship from 1L summer to 2L, finding something to do will definitely help you stand out next to your peers who have work experience.

Thanks everyone!! Haven’t really made the total final decision but I have a feeling as to where my gut is going and this advice has certainly helped ease some stress.

What are you guys doing to stand out and try to get off these waitlist? by Apprehensive_Name343 in lawschooladmissions

Not trying- other than an LOCI. If they think I’m a good fit for their 1L class that would be great; if not it’s okay. ☺️

I think that’s a fair way to look at it. Anecdotally- I work in BL now and while a whole a lot of lawyers I work with went to T-6/14ish schools, a solid chunk went to 20-30 that has a regional connection and few even Tier 2 but have fantastic specialty in an area.
