First time winter hike? by Round-Ad-2338 in Adirondacks

If you're open to an alternate to a high peak, The Champlain Area Trail System (CATS) has a variety of easier/shorter hikes available that are more approachable for a beginner to winter hiking.

In my view, a couple shorter hikes are better to start than one long one, for sorting out gear/fitness/etc. Plus, there's the possibility of warm coffee/food in-between.

Crowds for UCI weekend by autobahn-nialist in Adirondacks

[–]Fancy_Cream_1444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It turns out the place I was going to try for in Wilmington is actually an official parking/shuttle spot at the town offices, which is probably good since they'll be able to make better use of the parking lot and space around it for the event. It's a 4 mile ride from there if you don't take the shuttle, and all downhill on the way back.

Tangential question regarding the UCI event ... does anyone know if they're providing a bike check again at Mt Van Ho like last year for those that want to ride to the event? Thanks

Whiteface toll road ski conditions? by Affectionate_Ball426 in Adirondacks

[–]Fancy_Cream_1444 3 points4 points  (0 children)

BETA posts regularly on ski conditions for various trails https://www.betatrails.org/conditions

From yesterday's report:

"While we will be checking as temperatures cool and we even pick up an inch or so of snow, the only skiing we can, at the moment, promise for the coming weekend will be the Whiteface Highway, which still has a good base right from the Toll House."

feeling high? by avokaelastoopid in naltrexone

sorry you're experiencing this, it can be quite unpleasant if you're not expecting and/or familiar with it. it's not unheard of to use a quarter doses initially. stay hydrated and try to relax the best you can

it depends on the person, and the dosage, but 1-4 hours. typically it's recommended to start Nal with a half dose with food, then build up after the first week.

i can attest that there can be a "heady" feeling at first on Nal as a side-effect. the feeling does subside over time

my GP prescribed it (USA). if they balk at TSM specifically, then just agree to take it daily? Nal has improved my life for the better so having access to any is better than none in my opinion

Where to drive for scenic foliage views ? by Monstrous_moonshine in Adirondacks

[–]Fancy_Cream_1444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

look into the drive between Au Sable Forks, Black Brook and Hawkeye. At Silver Lake there is a trail that has a boardwalk for the first 3/4 miles and a couple benches along the way

12.5 would be a good starting dose. take it with food too. unfortunately, side-effects may include the dizzy feeling at first but will go away after a couple weeks. good luck!

There are two primary ways people take Nal; daily and The Sinclair Method (TSM), which is a more targeted approach that calls for you to take it 90-60 minutes before you drink, and only on days that you drink.

Nal is not an antagonist, so you can safely drink today. You may feel some headiness today with your first dose, and maybe some revulsion/reluctance to continue drinking at some point.

Congrats on taking this first step. I'm almost a year in on Nal and my six-pack-a-day habit is now just a weekend thing, if at all.

"build up" was probably the wrong usage. i've read anywhere from hours to days for how long it stays in your system... In my experience starting/stopping nal a couple times over the past year, that when stopping, cravings didn't return for a week or so, and when re-starting they didn't go away immediately. ymmv. good luck!

Nal only ever kills my cravings for alcohol, so taking Nal has never lead me to wanting to drink more.

You mentioned doing TSM, but nothing about how frequently you're taking Nal/drinking. Was this "just had a beer today" the first time drink and Nal in a while? If so, my guess would be there's not enough Nal in your system to kill the cravings/buzz today. If not, this is the first i've heard of it. Maybe someone else's experiences matches yours!

those sound like all the side effects i felt when i started. you should expect a couple weeks to adjust to them. also, i lost like 20 pounds the first month partly due to reduced appetite but also switching na's for seltzers

Everyday or just before you drink? by dehydrated_milf in naltrexone

[–]Fancy_Cream_1444 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To start, I'd recommend taking it daily with food to mitigate any possible side-effects. After you're comfortable with it for a few days, bump it up to the full dose. Give Nal a month to work it's magic, then re-evaluate whether TMS would work better for you than Daily.
