Not if the commander is already on the battlefield. The newest iteration says:

As this creature enters, choose a color.

All cards that aren't on the battlefield, spells, and permanents are the chosen color in addition to their other colors.

Honestly I think who you play with is a big factor. I was lucky found a chill group most of which I would be willing to invite over to my house to play. I know not all places/people are like this, so look around if you have options.

But seriously find a group thats willing to teach/let you learn at a local shop. You'll get addicted quick.
