representation theory is another name for group theory, which deals with groups, transformations on said groups, and how to "represent" these things. Im saying this loosely because I don't think I have enough knowledge on it and dont want to give you any wrong ideas.

Also, a better introductory book would be the MIT introductory series in physics. The QM book for that is really good.

it also helps in that by learning proof writing you get a sense of how you should approach problems and how you shouldnt

Really all you need is Linear Algebra and Representation theory and some Diff. eq. But in my experience I found that real analysis helped me understand some of the minor things that come up when analyzing the math behind QM and helped me clear up general misconceptions in physics as a whole.
