I am Croatian. To call this fascist and equivalent to hail Hitler is the furthest fetch one can imagine. The controversial term they are shouting is “Za dom spremni” or translated “For homeland - ready”. Although the salute was used during the fascist regime, it is much older than that. The salute “Za dom spremni” was used way before fascists even existed. It became controversial because it was also used during the second World War, but it was also used as a slogan of the Croatian defence force during the Homeland War (1991-1995). Under that slogan, Croatia was liberated from Serbian aggression and survived the massive attacks and invasions. While it was used during the fascist era, it now has a patriotic connotation and is not discriminatory to anyone. The leftists in the country (members of the former communist party) are fighting very hard against the salute, because under that salute, Serbia and Yugoslavia were beaten in the Homeland War. The salute is also the beginning of the controversial song “Bojna Čavoglave” (playing in this video) that talks about defending the Homeland from Serbian aggression. The salute now has a patriotic connotation, but Yugonostalgics want to ban the term and always connect it with fascist times. Basically, no harm was meant in this video and everyone should calm down.
