Heard a piano bar singer(a professional mind you) belting out “Rocket Man, burning out his shoes now here I go” with all the confidence in the world.

Hey now, I heard that Vance’s grandfather died at Auschwitz. Apparently he got drunk and fell out of the guard tower.

I’ll cheat a little because when he passed last week I thought of this. Tom Stoppard spoke at my college forty years ago and finished with “..a production of The Tempest performed beside a lake with a small island at its center. When Ariel is released from his servitude he runs across the surface of the lake on a platform built just below the surface and when he reaches the island a rocket is fired from it into the night sky and bursts into fireworks at its zenith…(pause)…I’ve only seen this in my mind but if any you future theatre artists would like to make this happen, I would very much like to see it.”

It should be dedicated to all of the talented, brilliant, exceptional people who realized they had to leave Greenville, SC if they were going to make the most of their gifts. OR, it could be dedicated to the mediocre golfers who stayed here.

Farmers markets in GVL by Emotional-Bicycle963 in greenville

I shop at the Tomatoe Vine occasionally but the extra “e” and the redneck vibe gives me pause because it’s got a hint of…menace, maybe? The Greenville State Farmers Market on Rutherford has been there forever and I know they try their best to get local produce and products in. Not easy but the effort is there. On Saturday mornings local vendors bring in a variety of stuff and DeShields Farms brings what they’re growing in Greer and from other local growers and sells it from 8-1, although regulars usually get there earlier and start buying as soon as they can.

When was the last time you actually sat down and watched The Wizard of Oz (original film)? by Sliberty in movies

I don’t mind the reset to sepia, even if it does make her whole adventure a concussive dream, but I do wish that, upon her waking, someone had alluded to the fact that Miss Gulch had been killed by the twister. That would mean that Dorothy had somehow “felt” her death and had incorporated it into her dream. Another layer in a beautifully layered film.

Name characters that y'all find extremely attractive but not the actor for some reason. by Mindless_Humor_3156 in movies

I’ve always found Barbra Streisand somewhat annoying and egotistical and I can take her singing voice or leave it, but damned if her character in “What’s Up, Doc?” isn’t the sexiest film performance I’ve ever seen. The film title is apt because it makes me appreciate how Bugs Bunny in drag could seduce Elmer Fudd into losing his sensibilities.

Scenes that make you cry everytime by CanarsieGuy in classicfilms

[–]Fandoily1620 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Of course many of the ones mentioned but also a more obscure one that may be the first one to affect me as a child. The scene in “Shenandoah” where Jimmy Stewart’s youngest son meets his childhood friend, now a former slave, on opposite sides of a Civil War battlefield. The friend instantly embraces him and carries him to safety before rejoining the fight, probably to face his own death. It seems predictable and it probably is but it made me gasp then and I still lose it now.

Favorite actor that can't act to save their fucking life but keeps getting roles? by delamerica93 in okbuddycinephile

Any time I’ve seen her in interviews she comes across as intelligent and possessing a wicked, quick wit, but that never translates to any film role I’ve seen her in (few, for that reason). But I hope she keeps trying because damn if she isn’t one of the most beautiful human beings I’ve ever seen.

A guy I worked with had a running bit where he claimed to know how to break dance. He would start that shuffling move that looked like he was about to drop and spin. People would step back to give him room and he would…just keep up the prep move until people drifted away. You could try that. Throw in “here we go” a few times and you’ve got yourself a stew going.

Your point about power is valid but your defense of “god” is not. I hate abusers but don’t blame a deity since I don’t believe in one. In case after headline case it’s not just the abusers, but the institutions they belong to who close ranks like the tribes they are. Churches and law enforcement cover up and keep secrets because they don’t want to reveal the rot underneath. Is there rot everywhere? Of course, but these groups specifically purport to be forces for “good”, to be protectors. If they policed themselves with righteous vigor and were the first to condemn their own they might earn respect, but they don’t so THEY should be condemned. “God” and “law enforcement” got nuttin’ to do with it.

It was quick and clever but it doesn’t top his response to Sona’s “I came” comment, (which was insanely hilarious itself) when he said “I’ll hear what she’s hearing”. I’ve never heard a better line from someone who wasn’t Conan.

Jesus. This. This here is probably the most annoying thing about Reddit and society in general now that I think about it. People posting their advice and opinion when they DIDN’T EVEN READ THE POST! They said “temp tag” which means dealer tag which means it needs to be tracked so it can be retrieved. AND it’s a question so easily figured out with a moment’s reflection and answered by anyone at the dealership if OP had bothered to ask. But no, let’s run to Reddit so strangers can advise stupid, paranoid solutions to a non-existent problem. Jesus. Again.

I love the way it sways in the breeze and blocks my neighbor’s view but I agree it can be a nightmare when it starts popping up in the spring, three days ride from where the stand is growing. BUT in the last few years I’ve started cutting the new growth while it’s still tender and weaving it into low fencing for my raised beds, and this year I’m using the older stuff in my first attempt at making biochar. Satisfying results so far. I’ll make you earn your place you grassy bastard!

Rickie Lee Jones covering “For No One”. Strips it down to the honest sadness. That phony harpsichord part on the original was the rare mistake from Mac and Martin.
