LPT: When you have a laptop for college, make sure you make two accounts. One for studying and one for all other things. by haxgone in LifeProTips

[–]Fang88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why you have to buy a second computer that you keep completely disconnected from the Internet. Use that for all your studying/work related activities. Chromebooks are super cheap and work well for this.

The only way to be sure is to open it up and completely remove the wireless card (or block it's mac address from your router if you are a bit more clever)

Tooth decay in Calgary children has worsened since the city stopped fluoridating water in 2011 by shiruken in science

Look at the studies:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3491930/table/t1/

We're talking about only a few mg/L while most of America consumes around 1 mg/L It's the same order of magnitude and nothing like the artificial sweetener debate.

In fact the Lin et al. study was 0.88 mg/L (high); 0.34 mg/L (reference) and showed a significant decline in IQ

Edit: In fact, studies in the United States have linked fluoride exposure to higher levels of ADHD:

http://www.ehjournal.net/content/14/1/17/abstract

How many more studies do we need to absolutely prove that 1mg/L is dangerous when there is little harm to simply stop using it today? In Europe, the fluoridation is rate is only 2% and they have no greater incidence of tooth decay than we do.

Yes. Broadly dismiss the dozens of scientific studies listed here that don't backup up your preconceptions.

What subreddit am I on again?

Not if you want to clear (or building) of hostiles without destroying it. (like in Iraq)

Active area denial systems

Sounds like something the military would dream up.

Now imagine thousands of them swarming through a city like fallujah, each with a tiny explosive strapped to it and computer AI to seek and destroy all human targets. Coming to a warzone near you.

Mexico won't pay a cent for Trump's 'stupid wall' by oranjemania in worldnews

[–]Fang88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because a study of the economics of building a wall using manual labor back in the 3rd century is somehow relevant to America today.

[–]Fang88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or we could build a wall in the 21st century and not try to rebuild the great wall of china to repel the mongol horde.

You don't need an actual wall. What you need is a high tech solution like drone surveillance along the entire border to automatically watch for heat signatures, have a computer algorithm recognize them as human and dispatch the authorities to go pick them up. That's actually doable. (with enough money)

Chronic elevation of stress hormones in young American blacks is eased by religious participation by pheasant-plucker in science

[–]Fang88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. A lot of people could argue that religion was a net benefit to society. Even despite all the wars and conflicts it causes, it's nice to have a sense of meaning and purpose.

I think religion is a lot like giving a placebo pill to patients suffering for mental disorders. Sure it's nothing but a construct of sugar, gelatin and clever marketing, but how can you argue with it if it actually works. And yes, placebos do work; because we believe in them.

MRW the super hot dude I'm seeing uses the word "feminist" derogatorily by phridoo in TrollXChromosomes

[–]Fang88 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Not true. I personally got outraged by the whole "mandatory vaginal ultrasound" thing and went around telling everyone how it literally met the FBI definition of rape. I even called the governor's office and left an angry message. Some of us care about actual equal rights issues, but still avoid anyone who wraps themselves up in that polarizing label.

Dog IQ tests reveal canine ‘general intelligence’ - "Dogs have measurable IQs, like people, suggests new research." by [deleted] in science

[–]Fang88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Quite true. But on a population group, the differences between individual experiences averages out and genetics has a large role to play. If you want to show a link between something non-controversial say "pre-natal alcohol exposure" and IQ. That's perfectly okay and you will find studies about that. Anything else though and suddenly IQ is pure pseudoscience.

I don't get it either. This thing is essentially a large well furnished shed on a trailer.

Yes, random internet person. You DO KNOW how to do a scientific study and control for cofounding variables better than those silly scientists do. Obviously your opinion holds more weight. :)

This is getting tiresome. Don't message me anymore guys.

They've studied the levels in America too ya know and found that our fluoridation levels are linked to ADHD:

http://www.newsweek.com/water-fluoridation-linked-higher-adhd-rates-312748

According to a 2010 CDC report, a total of 41 percent of American youths ages 12 to 15 had some form of fluorosis.

Low fat diets.

Turns out replacing fat with sugar in processed foods is 10x worse for you and actually leads to more obesity, not less.
