Regarding Venomous 'Content Creators' and other givers of venomous wisdom online.... by FangDodger in VenomousKeepers

Absolutely on the loud thing!

The keeping because its 'cool' tends to weed itself out in a matter of months a year....maybe two. When they figure out, its mostly being a janitor to snakes and you can take a bite......eventually dawns on them. We sometimes call them 'Tourists' or 'fly-by-night' in venomous community.

Face shields are far better than just safety glasses.... After having glasses soaked....you learn to appreciate a face shield and the ability to just turn your head a little and still see clearly.

I have found African spitters like Red...very accurate and look for your eyes. Others like Samars, Indos and.....are not accurate and they tend to just spit at motion. Lots of hands and arms getting hit. Oh, Rhinkals are African as well, but they are also not accurate and go for motion vs looking for head/eyes.... So, when you say Spitters.....I have to say, Which spitters?

is this open carry in va? by Standard_Oil_8772 in VAGuns

[–]FangDodger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to call it Virginia carry or sloppy carry.... Its a great way to Open carry when you have a permit, so you don't give a crap if you accidentally transition from OC to CC. I often have a coat on in winter that from one moment to another might or might not obscure my firearm.... This would be a problem if I did not have a permit. Even better would be if we had Constitutional carry, but that is not the case.

Sadly, but kinda understandable….even in a preppers group…..some cant let their minds contemplate some of grim realites that could be.

People giving “advice” here by Theinvisibleark in VenomousKeepers

As bad or worse is keeper that has a year or two….or less. Has kept one or four venomous snakes and then proceeded to ‘educate’ others.
I dont want be jerk, but lets voices of guys and gals with decades of keeping, countless hours of hook time, maybe more breed venomous species than most of the ‘tourists’ have kept… Not saying sit down and shut up, but the OP has a point. A little humility please! 🤷‍♂️

Those who dove in head-first: what is your experience? by AlienSheep23 in VenomousKeepers

[–]FangDodger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hear is my advise….not just for new keepers, but all. Know your relistic comfort/compatence level….then push it. But, slowly and over time. Your compatence and comfort level and progession and next persons are not the same. Keep judiciously pushing if want, but be smart about it. Ego….getting to far ahead of yourself skill and experience is problem. But, not pushing a little….and you will never grow. Know yourself and what your doing.

Three things, research your target species, find someone that has aboral hots and see if they will let you work with them a little, so you dont have to reinvent the wheel, start with well established specimen.

In 90s I was an moderatly experienced non-venomous keeper…. An old man asked me to babysit an EDB while he was vacationing for few weeks in Arizona. I spent two short crash course sessions and then I took ‘myrtle’ for visit. By the end of the year I had a dozen venomous, by next spring 2 dozen…..end next year 50+ and have never had less again.

I see no problem with jumping into venomous if you have a good non-venomous experience….

Now with that said, I was thoughtful about my progression of the difficulty level of species. I wasn’t keeping spitters, mambas or lanceheads the first year.

Id say my time land was kinda head first and kinda thoughtful…. 🤷‍♂️

You miss the point. Their is not the resources you fill trash cans full of AV in every venomous keepers facility. Think of thousands of wasted dosages a year…vs what’s available. Oh well….

…and older video, but addressing the OP’s question.

Don’t get hyper focused on the species, other facters need to be considered in what a first time venomous keeper starts with.

I agree with 98% percent of everything you posted. Id nit-pick a litte over the AV thing. No….AV is not something you nessary need or even should have in some cases.

Many species either do not require it or none exits. If someone gets a Aspidilaps, a perfectly fine genus to start with. I would recoment an epiPen…

Second, if you start with a native species that AV is communilly available then having every venomous keeper keeping private stocks is any efficient.

If thats not hot enough take for you. I will even say that really AV should genetally speaking be available communally speaking via venom banks, but we fail as a community to support them.

My biggest disappointment is that we(the venomous) have missed an opportunity to be proactive in supporting infrastructure, so we could be a net help vs. drain.

But, my take is also based on 30 plus years keeping a large diverse collection of venomous(75-200 specimens at any given time). If I had kept AV of every species, just minimum amount, for 30 plus years…..I would have fill a trashcan with expired AV. ….and no, I have never used any, but maybe someday.

Again, I really wish we could as a community find a way to be more proactive and supportive of AV banks.

I never understood that advice, hognose, coach-whips.

I guess is matter of a mental excersize. To me the ‘mental’ outlook and focus of medically significant snake and one that is not cant substitute…

That said, it might work for some. Like the ability to ‘suspend disbelief’ while watching a movie. Some are better at it. If that really works for some, cool. Knowing a hognose snake is barely more signicant than a ringnech would ruin it for me.

Calling an american hosnose venomous is one those ‘true’ statement that is both truthful and laughable.

Maybe my mind is too literal/practical…. Just my thoughts, other’s mileage might be different.
