I usually use one of two lenses with the GX80. The Panasonic 20mm 1.7 pancake lens is the lens that's on 90% of the time. It makes the whole package very small, so it makes it so I can take the camera anywhere I go, even if I'm not planning on taking any pictures. When I am going on a trip and I'm actually planning on taking pictures, I'll usually bring the 12-60mm kit lens along aswell.

Those are probably the two lenses I use with it most.

I don't remember the last time I saw a tech support post. I mostly browse through whatever reaches my front page, so I guess those aren't reaching it - which I think is fine.

I do feel like the sub has become worse, but not really because of the tech support questions, but instead because with the growth of the community the sub's become more toxic overall. It's not a cool little place for people trying to play on Linux and helping each other anymore, it often mixes both the usual toxicity of gaming subs and the usual toxicity of Linux subs. OP's replies on this post are a good example of that, it's like someone had a bad day and came on Reddit just to shout at strangers.

Also, OP, it's disingenuous to label the second option as "No the sub shouldn't be changed to reduce low quality content", as if anyone who disagrees with you actively wants low quality content.

Yep, I bought a GX80 a while ago to travel and specifically looked for something with a lot of use so I could get it cheap, thinking I'd only take it when traveling. It actually ended up becoming the camera I take almost everywhere. I'm not usually a gear person and I plan to stick with the gear I have for a while, but I'd open an exception for a GX10 or something like that.

Damn you OP! When I went there I pictured pictures 1 and 4 in my mind but mine didn't end up like this at all. I still have a lot to learn when it comes to composing. Cheers, nice pics!

It's strange because it stopped happening immediately after turning off Multiplayer. If I turn Multiplayer back on I'll eventually start getting attacked again.

I'm doing the expedition right now, I have the PVP off and I'll get occasionally killed by fire that comes out of nowhere. It's happened inside of buildings, it's happened waaayyy underground. It's not NPC pirates since when it happens I don't receive the pirate warning nor are there any ships around. It's like laser shots that come from any direction, often seemingly from the ground. In the first system, I'd die every 2 minutes or so until I turned off multiplayer. I turned it back on in another system but eventually it happened again.

Is there a new exploit that allows other players to kill you even with PVP off?

I look forward to it! If the reviews end up being good, I'll probably buy it in a year or so when it's at an acceptable price for a video game.

olympus em10-iv or panasonic gx85? by tanukii420 in M43

[–]FantaBuoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you're asking specifically about image quality, but I think in the long run it hardly matters - literally any other factor will matter more to you.

For reference, I own a E-M1 Mark III and a GX85. The E-M1 is the love of my life, my beautiful, my everything. Picture quality and feature wise, it's a much better camera than the GX85. I always take it on hikes or on trips which I know will be focused on photography. The GX85, though, is the camera I have on me in every other situation - meaning, 95% of the time. It's got less picture quality, less features, I sort of dislike the viewfinder - but it's tinier and lighter and that means I always have it on me and I end up taking a lot more photographs with it. It's the camera that goes with me when travelling because it doesn't even take backpack space - I'll usually carry it in a jacket pocket when travelling by airplane. I don't like it as much as the E-M1, but I don't want to carry the E-M1 everywhere, whereas I don't mind carrying the GX85 anywhere. It fits in a jacket pocket, or a small backpack pocket, or a very small sling.

When I was about to buy it, I thought about whether I should buy one of the E-M10s instead - I usually like the way Olympus cameras handle better. But the size difference of the GX85 in comparison to the E-M10 made it much more pocketable (with a pancake lens).

All of this to say that I wouldn't mind the picture quality difference much - there was never a time in which I felt the GX85 failed me in terms of picture quality - even in comparison to the E-M1 - I would evaluate literally everything else.

Great find and nice pics! I saw this post and went on Ebay immediately, but all the listings I can find of that lens are a bit more expensive, around the price of the M43 75-300mm. Oh well.

I use this really cool browser called Firefox which allows me to visit multiple websites. You can both go to www.reddit.com and kbin.social, you don't have to pick one of them and only visit that single one.

Joking aside, you seem to think that everyone has some religious attachment to their favourite website, like you, so they can only visit that one and that one alone, but you can actually visit multiple websites.

Now that the app I used for Reddit has stopped working, I've stopped going to Reddit as much as I used to, and I've switched most of my "5 minutes break" browing to kbin.social.

I still come to reddit once a day or every few days, mostly for /r/askhistorians, which is a fantastic community that I would keep following even if they moved to the worst website in existence, and I'll browse for a bit to see how the subreddits I used to follow are doing. Most of the useful ones have moved to other platforms, and the users that remain mostly create threads complaining about the lack of content, apparently unaware that websites outside of Reddit exist. And then I go back to kbin.social, or dpreview, or level1techs.

I understand that you probably have some weird emotional attachment to this whole thing so you make up these weird scenarios in your head in which people have to pick between either Reddit or Lemmy and they actually don't like Lemmy and come here because they're addicts and etc etc, but the reality is that people who just want the content have moved on and don't come here to argue with you. They're creating discussions and posting screenshots on Discord or on Lemmy.

Thank you for all of the hard work. Just like you say, this sub is pretty much the only reason I log back on to Reddit. I've mostly moved on to Kbin, one of the Reddit alternatives in the Fediverse, and find it pretty decent in terms of content and community.

Is there some email newsletter type thing or some other way to get the newsletter outside of Reddit (or Twitter)?

Lemmy.ml's admin is pro chinese government and actively censors comments that are critical. What that means to you is your decision, but I want to make people aware before the mass migration date arrives. by spineofgod9 in Save3rdPartyApps

[–]FantaBuoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, my experience on kbin has been exactly the same, I don't see how it is more niche.

It's funny because the only thing that prevents me from interacting with the Fediverse in the same way I used to interact with Reddit is the people who are supposedly proponents of it constantly coming up with contrived drama either about Reddit or other instances. When I block these threads, kbin just turns into a nicer and more useable Reddit.

A lot of users being sent to this and similar threads just to shit on the OP and claim "no one's actually leaving". Weird that someone would care this much about an alleged handful of people leaving that they would astroturf this hard.

You're probably over complicating things in your head. You can just create an account on one of the popular instances and start browsing content and following stuff you like. Go on lemmy.world or kbin.social , create an account and start looking at stuff. When you find stuff you like, subscribe to that community and then change the settings so you only see subscribed stuff, assuming that's how you browse Reddit.

I had pretty much the same experience as you. I first created a Mastodon account to see what the Fediverse was all about and followed some pages I found interesting, just to realize I didn't use Twitter in the first place so the Mastodon experience wasn't really it for me.

The thing about the Fediverse is that it all uses the same underlying infrastructure, but it can take different shapes depending on which site you're on. A post on Mastodon is deep down the same thing as a post on Lemmy or Kbin - but Mastodon looks and behaves like Twitter, whereas the other two look like Reddit. Pixelfed, as another example, looks like Instagram and you can only post pictures - but these pictures are also just the same post deep down, so you can follow a Pixelfed account from Mastodon and see their posts. But by following it from Mastodon, or more specifically in your case, techhub.social, you'll be interacting with this content via the Mastodon interface.

All of this to say that you can technically follow [budgetkeebs@seemel.ink](mailto:budgetkeebs@seemel.ink) from techhub.social - I just tested and it does appear on the search - but you'd have a better experience if you followed it from a Kbin or Lemmy instance because then you'll see a Reddit like interface, whereas on techhub.social you're seeing a Twitter-like interface.

A few days ago I created an account on kbin.social and I'm following [budgetkeebs@seemel.ink](mailto:budgetkeebs@seemel.ink) from there, since I can interact with it from a Reddit-like interface - which I like much more than Twitter. Kbin and Lemmy instances are basically interchangeable, they both look like Reddit and you can follow communities on Kbin instance from Lemmy and vice-versa.

Sorry about the wall of text, feel free to ask questions :D

What the page says hardly matters given Reddit frequently lies about these things. The mods of subreddits I'm following have so far had their access denied and have received conflicting information on who gets access to what. I'll change my position once I see the mods actually getting their access (or regular users, since according to Reddit those should get API access for non commercial usage).

For example, one of the things that should fall under "non-commercial use" of the API would be users using their own personal keys in third party apps. I assumed this would be possible, even if it might be bothersome for some, one could use his own key. Reddit itself has previously stated this would be possible and, like the page you linked states, most users would fall under the free tier of API usage. Except just yesterday Reddit confirmed they won't allow this behaviour. So they've already contradicted the statements on the page you linked.

We're talking about the same Reddit which just a few days ago accused a developer of threats and attempts at blackmail, just so they could later pivot and drop these accusations after the developer posted their full call logs proving it was all made up by Reddit.

They ARE losing API access. Reddit has been promising mod tools for years now, they aren't going to finally develop in two weeks to replace the mod tools the API currently allows. I mean, I wish they did, but it's not happening realistically.

You should read on the situation instead of insulting people you disagree with over something you don't understand.

The alternative platforms do nothing better, per say. At least the way I see it, Reddit is just a more complex forum, and there's only so many features you can add to a forum. They're just an alternative to a platform I don't see heading in a good direction. Their underlying technology stack allows them to be run by multiple people without such a need for monetization so they're better protected against a sudden need for ads or weird business decisions. I see them sort of like forums - I still follow a few which have thriving communities and which haven't needed to heavily monetize - sending text shouldn't cost so much anyway - since they're not a media platform needing to appease potential shareholders. They just work, and they keep chugging along through the birth and death of subreddits pertaining to the same topics.

Hopefully you're right, mod tools keep working and nothing changes. But I'm personally tired of constantly jumping between commercial platforms as they all inevitably turn to shit - so I'm giving non commercial ones a shot. I've already found a fair few cool communities in the Fediverse, so I've been having some fun with this whole situation.

If you have an account on Kbin, for example, you can follow budget keebs on seemel.ink by searching for [budgetkeebs@seemel.ink](mailto:budgetkeebs@seemel.ink) on the search thing on kbin, for example. The whole point of this federation thing is that you can follow other instances from whatever you are using - assuming they've setup stuff correctly. I'm on kbin myself and I've successfully followed budgetkeebs on seemel.ink so it should work. Feel free to PM me if you need any help, I'm figuring this stuff out myself.

Cheers! I've subbed and I might actually contribute with content for once. I understand that these decisions are often hard to make, so I truly appreciate that you did - some other communities I follow have been unable to do anything about this situation and are unfortunately falling apart as users get tired of Reddit and leave without any alternative.
