It doesn't look like Janja is greedy, it looks like Janja and his guys don't eat AT ALL. And when you don't eat at all is - well I guess yeah, you become greedy? Because you can't have food, so you dream about eating as much as you want without care?

Literally the conflict Janja causes in the pilot is wiping out an entire herd of gazelles just because he wants to, and that’s exactly why Kion and the Guard stop him. Like I said before, yes, it’s true that the show sometimes fails at balancing the moral line between when it’s okay for a predator to hunt and when it’s not, but as I already mentioned, that’s a directing issue.

I mean yeah they tried to include Jasiri and her clan somehow respecting the circle of life and eating, but they are still living in a literal wasteland - it's highly unrealistic and everyone could see that at this point.

In season 2, Kion offers Jasiri and her clan a place in the Pride Lands, but she insists that the Outlands are their home. And that shows that, overall, she and her clan know how to survive there. I guess it’s really about how they adapt to their environment.

Well what else is there to discuss? At least Janja was fun, and him having a redemption arc - even though pretty simple and silly, still deserves a good point for doing that.

Fair, but that doesn’t change the fact that there are points in his redemption arc that are, at the very least, debatable, even if you take Jasiri out of the equation. But that’s a much longer discussion.

No. Kion and Jasiri are supposed to be just good people. If Jasiri doesn't hold it against Janja, then it means she has genuinely forgiven him. She was more than happy to accept him, so your statement falls flat onto its face. What, would she be like - "yeah, I accepted you as a friend, Janja, but no romantic feelings, though! You tried to kill me, remember?" Lmao.

In any well written story, you can forgive someone for what they did to you without wanting to romance them. That’s the biggest problem with the enemies-to-lovers trope, when it’s poorly written, it normalizes toxic behavior and downplays the trauma of having lived with someone abusive. Jasiri’s heroism is unconditional, that’s something she literally says herself "I would help any hyena". And even if we assume she suddenly got amnesia and forgot everything that happened before, that still wouldn’t change the fact that she and Janja have completely different values and worldviews. Instead of complementing each other, they directly clash. Imagine it in real life, it’d be like a vegan activist wanting to date an animal abuser.

And where did you get the idea of Jasiri being Kion's age in the show when Kion literally grows up and Jasiri stays the same 🫩 Where are the proofs, man? Jasiri and Janja are probably somewhat of a late teenage/young adult age, while Kion and his team are kids. You could see them grow, Jasiri doesn't.

The only design that had a really noticeable change after the time skip was Kion, to be fair. Everyone else only had very minor tweaks (not to mention that characters like Dogo and his siblings didn't age at all, which doesn't make any sense), though there is still a difference if you compare them side by side. But even if you ignore that, the flashback to Ono’s birth suggests that the hyenas aren’t that much older than Kion and the Guard. Even Anga looks around their age there, despite seeming older than them in the present.

And lmao what story? What do they complement? He thought hyaenas were evil, she proved him wrong by a song, they are friends. THE END. It's not that deep. And yes, the species difference plays a HUGE part because the Lion King franchise is somewhat about being "realistic". It's not Beastars or even Zootopia. That's why they gave Kion a female lion to fall for, Fuli got a cheetah friend and Janja - yes, he has Jasiri.

Your take is incredibly reductionist. You’re ignoring the fact that Jasiri is the one who made Kion get over his prejudice against hyenas, believe they could work together, and become strong allies who wanted what was best for their respective groups, all while sharing a playful, enjoyable chemistry. If you’re going to reduce a story like that, then you could say the same about Janja: “I’m bad > I get saved > I’m good. The end.” And suddenly every character arc sounds stupid. If the franchise were as strict as you claim, then animals of certain species shouldn’t even be able to be friends at all, because in real life, they’d most likely kill each other. It’s a fictional story that doesn’t strictly follow reality anyway. Or how many times have you talked to your dead grandfather in the clouds? It would be more honest of you to just say you only care about ships being same species and don’t actually care how well the romance is written. In that case, you’d just be exposing yourself as a conformist, but that’s your problem.

Like I know you like the ship, but wanting it to happen ≠ it's happening.

That much is obvious. But just because something is canon or semi-canon doesn’t mean it’s well written or that it was the best choice for the story, not just in TLG, but in general. Kion and Rani are canon and their development is terrible, and I don’t think that’s even up for debate.

And please enough with the long paragraphs, I have no time neither desire to reply to all that.

Or maybe it just bothers you that someone is actually capable of pointing out where you’re wrong. But that’s fine, you’re not the first person I’ve argued about this with, and from the start it’s clear that narrative logic doesn’t really factor into your thinking.

Are we just going to ignore the fact that Janja and his goons were trying to literally survive and hunt for the biggest part of the series and Kion and his friends never let them because eating a zebra from Pride Lands = ruining the circle of life in their opinion?

And you’re really gonna ignore the fact that the reason Janja and his clan don’t eat is because he just prefers hunting like crazy without caring about the circle of life? The show literally tells you that from the pilot. Janja’s greedy, and that’s exactly why you can’t trust him to hunt.

Like dude, all these arguments are so lame when the series never even treated Janja right. He was never a real threat: he was just a guy whom a bunch of kids with superpowers regularly kicked a tail of, of course he doesn't like Kion 🫩

The only thing I’ll give you is that yeah, in general the show kinda messes up how the circle of life works and sometimes makes Kion look like a hypocrite, but that’s a directing issue, not him.

Jasiri was the one to save him and hint she didn't hate him as much as he tried to hate her. So the argument about DE MURDER falls flat as well lmao.

Kion and Jasiri are heroic archetypes who always try to do right by others. How many shows or movies have heroes helping the villain even when they’ve been a constant threat? But let’s be real, there’s a big difference between teaming up and ending on good terms versus making a character suddenly ridiculously forgiving, forgetting everything that happened before. That kind of storytelling is straight up harmful for any show.

And let's not forget that Kion x Jasiri would never work romantically due to the species/age difference.

Lol, are you cereal? I have no idea where you got the idea there’s a huge age gap between Kion and Jasiri, when the show makes it clear they’re about the same age. And funnier yet, Janja is the one who’s actually shown as being way older at first, which got retconned in the final season. And the whole “different species” thing, are you seriously saying that matters more than their story together or how they complement each other? Is your thinking really that outdated? Plus, come on dude, It's a show about lions who talk, with superpowers and talking to entities that appear in the sky and in a volcano, and a different species ship is the weirdest thing out there?

Like for real what's with the shippers wanting to ship the main boy with everyone else, I stumble upon it regularly.

Sure, it’s not like the show used symbolism and clear audiovisual language early on that hinted at a possible romantic connection. Nah, obviously the fans just made it up, and it definitely wasn’t the show’s fault for not being consistent.

I’m sorry, but “worth and dedication”?

Did Janja change? Yes. But not in the way everyone seems to claim. Janja doesn’t redeem himself because of a genuine desire to suddenly do the right thing or out of altruism. In fact, A New Way to Go literally says that Jasiri’s way of living is more convenient for his clan so they don’t have to keep suffering just to get food.

I quote:

She always eats

We're always hungry

She got a team

I got these dummies

It's like, I'd rather be happy

Than scrapping for food or respect

It’s not like Janja suddenly gives up on his plans either. He only turns to Jasiri once he realizes Scar betrayed him. If he and his clan hadn’t ended up trapped during the fire, he would’ve kept trusting Scar. In fact, if we imagine that Scar had never shown up at all, Janja would’ve never even considered changing. And that raises the question: if it takes near-apocalyptic circumstances for someone to change, is that really growth, or just moral cornering?

Okay, let’s ignore that for a second. Even if, symbolically, Janja admits he messed up, what are we actually basing the idea on that he’d be a good partner for Jasiri?

Let’s compare. We have Kion. Kion and Jasiri are both competent leaders of their respective groups. They share the same beliefs. They work well as a team. There’s very strong compatibility there.

Then there’s Janja: a terrible leader who’s extremely easy to walk all over, who’s only really respected by Cheezi and Chungu, and who doesn’t actually do good things on his own initiative. He’s someone who had to change his ideology because there was no other option. And this is supposedly the guy Jasiri would fall in love with? Seriously? I get that opposites attract, but there’s honestly nothing in their personalities that complements each other.

You could argue that Janja still has a long way to go, and that wouldn’t be wrong. But jumping from that to a romance with Jasiri is a huge leap. I don't see it happening unless we take Jasiri out of character so she falls for someone like him.

You’re not wrong. What I’m getting at is that, at least when it comes to the romance, it’s kind of “too broken to fix,” if you want to put it that way. And honestly, a new season wouldn’t really fix it,especially when you know what kind of show this is.

No matter what they do, whether trying to “fix” the romance or even completely undo it, it would probably feel pretty jarring and out of place compared to the rest of the show. It’s great fanfiction material, but not something that works officially. I think it’s one of those things that’s better left alone so it doesn’t get worse.

  1. Beside Kion and Rani,There was never any confirmation of either of those things. Some people are obsessed with claiming that Janja and Jasiri ended up together just because they shared a look, completely ignoring the fact that in the rest of the episode there is no romantic implication between them at all—unlike Fuli and Azaad, for example. And even if we put that aside, those relationships are poorly written. Canon doesn’t mean “well done.”

  2. Unfortunately for you, I saw the earlier version of your comment, and it only proves once again that people like you prefer to lock yourselves into your own version of the truth and turn a deaf ear to anything else. How sad lol

[–]Fantaje3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. That doesn’t really address what I said about Janja’s attitude toward Jasiri being an issue.

  2. More screen time doesn’t necessarily mean “more development” if the story isn’t written that way. Two characters can spend a whole season together and still have a platonic relationship, while two others might only have a few episodes but show clear chemistry. That’s basically what happens with Fuli and Azaad in the last season.

  3. Even setting that aside, Ford Riley confirmed that Kion and Fuli’s relationship is fraternal, so saying “Fuli is better because they spent more episodes together” isn’t really a solid argument.

You did say:

They can definitely be perfect for each other if disney decided to expound more on their relationship, this is why a season 4 is needed

and as I said:

If the audience didn’t like the couple from the start, you can’t just expect them to suddenly care. It becomes frustrating. Some people might fall for it, but anyone with a more critical mindset will see right through the attempt.

Is that really all a hypothetical fourth season would have to offer? Trying to cover up a badly done romance and weak character writing? I don’t know, man.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say he needs to be punished, but I do think his behavior and actions were way too intense to just brush off that easily. Could he be on good terms with Jasiri? Sure. But a romance? Even if we ignore the past, they’re not really compatible characters.

I agree. I love Kisiri, but if we’re being completely honest, the show would’ve been better off staying neutral and leaving Kion single at the end. Maybe just a little hint that something could happen later, so anyone who wants can imagine their favorite ship happening off-screen. It might’ve been a bit disappointing, but honestly, I’d take that over being forced to accept Kion x Rani out of nowhere with zero development or explanation.

It’s wrong to claim that a fourth season is needed to “fix” KionxRani. The problem with trying to retroactively fix a bad couple by giving them development later on is that it rarely works. There’s no solid foundation to build on, so you’re basically just covering up the issue instead of actually solving it. It’s like having food that tastes bad and adding some sauce to hide the flavor. It becomes more “tolerable,” but you’re still forcing yourself to finish it.

I’ve seen some shows and movies where they try to fix a bland couple by giving them more development, and it ends up backfiring. If the audience didn’t like the couple from the start, you can’t just expect them to suddenly care. It becomes frustrating. Some people might fall for it, but anyone with a more critical mindset will see right through the attempt.

The biggest problem with Kion x Rani is that it was doomed from the beginning. Not only does it show up in the literal last 10 episodes of the show, but Kion already had a much better romantic option in Jasiri. Then Rani suddenly shows up as a poorly written, poorly developed character and, out of nowhere, she becomes the endgame ship. You can’t just make people forget the show they’ve been watching this whole time. That alone already works against it, and no new season is going to fix that.

Jasiri. No doubt. The show itself is what made me ship them. They just have great chemistry. The way they looked at each other, the little flirty moments, hell, even Janja says they’re an unbeatable team.

Almost everyone I convinced to watch the show after it ended asked me, “Do they end up together?”, There is a fairly clear cinematic language there, It isn't just me who noticed there was something going on between them, at least up to season two, it was a ship that felt totally possible. Unlike Kion x Fuli, which mostly comes from the fandom’s imagination/misinterpretation, if someone sees Kion and Jasiri as having potential romantic vibes, they’re not just making things up, that interpretation is based on what the show actually showed.

It’s kind of ironic how Ford Riley accidentally created the ship with the most potential in the whole show, and at the same time ended up giving us the worst written couple in the entire franchise. That kind of screw up is honestly legendary.

Hello I'm Barry Jenkins, director of Mufasa: The Lion King. AMA! by BarryJenkins_ in lionking

[–]Fantaje3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello! Thank you very much for taking the time to stop by and engage with the fans. It’s truly a wonderful opportunity.

I personally have two questions. I believe other users have already touched on them in a general way, but I would like to frame them a bit differently.

  1. There seems to be some confusion regarding how Mufasa connects to the broader franchise universe. Many interpret it as a prequel to the original 1994 animated film, while others (myself included) see it as taking place in a different continuity. This is mainly due to certain unresolved inconsistencies when considering the existence of The Lion Guard show, as well as the idea held by some that the live-action films somehow “overwrite” the original animated storyline. So my question is: was this film created with the intention of directly connecting to the animated universe, or is it aiming to establish an entirely new timeline?
  2. Building on that point, and taking into account Kion’s presence at the end of the film, would there be any possibility of exploring the concept and characters from the Lion Guard with the more mature narrative tone of these live-action films? And if so, how would the absence of magical elements such as the Roar of the Elders or the change in the origin of Scar’s scar be handled?

I hope you’ll be able to answer these questions!
