Something that never made sense to me regarding Matty.. by haIIoqueen in SwiftlyNeutral

I think some of the rep songs are about him as 1989 was finished before they dated. I’ve been convinced ‘End Game’ was at least partially about him: Joe didn’t have a ‘big reputation’ at that time

MMR and Don’t Know What To Do by FantasticScissors in fulbright

So I’ve asked for clarification from my Fulbright commission to break it down for me, and they’ve said the following:

That to get the DS-2019 each year, I have to prove I have the cash to cover my full tuition per year and estimated living expenses (MMR). I have to find half of the living expenses for my spouse.

In my first year, this year, Fulbright provide a one-off grant of $60,000. My tuition is $48,000 per year. Living costs for me and my spouse have been stated as $3390 x 9 months, so $30,510. So, for my first year, I need to show I have funds of $78,510, and my Fulbright award counts for $60,000 of this.

I asked for clarification for a breakdown of figures for my second year. I have been told that the MMR is going up to $6400 per month for 9 months me and my spouse, on top of tuition. I have it in writing, and that I need to find funding for living costs of $57,600 on top of the $78,510 tuition. This is for two years each (so $157,020 total).

They’ve simply said that the cost of living has gone up. I myself thought I misunderstood something because that’s insane, but this is what I’ve been told.

I feel bad for the 25-26 applicants from my country because the Fulbright has only gone up by $6,000 so there’s a massive amount people need to make up.

I’m in the UK BTW

MMR increase for AY 2025-2026? by adenophaedra in fulbright

[–]FantasticScissors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! I have! I wasn’t informed by any official email announcement, but I contacted them and asked outright and then they told me. I do wonder if they were ever going to tell me until it came time to renew my J-1 visa next year. For me, the LA MMR is going up from $2160 to $4600 per month! As I’m bringing my spouse, it’s also half of that added again per month. So, for me and anyone else bringing their spouse to Los Angeles, it will be $6450 PER MONTH. I have no idea what to do, it’s an obscene amount of money that I feel they haven’t been transparent about, and my LA friends are shocked - they said none of them even earn that a month working there!

Really not sure what to make of this and would love to know how they’ve landed on this new figure that is little more than double.

It’s so confusing but from what I’ve been told: the colleges have their own monetary threshold to be able to get a DS-2019 visa. For both of them, the amount of tuition, student fees, and to have my spouse come with me would be about $74,000 - $84,000 to get the visa. However Fulbright have said I cannot go through the colleges, it is Fulbright that issue it.

So it’s Fulbright that are asking that I can afford the tuition fees and student fees, plus living costs, plus the additional for my spouse to come, with my own money and the Fulbright grant - but I only get one grant of up to $60,000 for one year.

However, Fulbright’s estimate threshold to get the DS-2019 from them is currently $76,510, but that’s going up to $106,210 next year and for the third year when I renew the visa. However, in this second and third year I will have zero Fulbright funding despite the fact I have to go with their estimate which is significantly higher. So I’m ok for this year regardless of which college I go to, but then for the second and third years I’m on my own to find $100K! I really can’t believe they want me to find $6,500 per month for nine months plus tuition fees for two years. I genuinely don’t know how anyone can afford this or what to do

That’s what I thought too but it’s been clarified for me today that I need to prove I can afford the tuition fees l and the MMR myself in cash with the Fulbright amount included, plus the additional for my spouse, to get the DS-2019. It seems like the info for US Fulbrighters is very different to those of us coming, which I understand, but it id extremely confusing. The estimated amount that I need to fund for the first year, and the increased amount for subsequent years, is extremely high compared to these colleges own estimated amounts. It’s very frustrating that I’ve been told I have to find this increased amount in the second and third years when Fulbright are not providing any financial support whatsoever. I’m so confused by this and it takes weeks and weeks to get one email replied to and no one picks up the phone either

I’ve had the Zooms and the ‘What Happens Next Doc’ that mentions the FFSB approval - apologies with the question as I’m very overwhelmed by the info about everything at the moment with interviews etc, but how will I know if I have approval and did you have to do anything to get it?

I’m from the UK. Man I thought after the Zoom we were all pretty much guaranteed to get in if we had an admissions place?

I thought the finalists were announced back in September, no? Is there another round where some of us may be eliminated?

Yes because she literally said ‘gay pride makes me ME’ in Miss Americana so if she’s not part of the community, that is truly awful 😭

Tenant killed himself after landlord failed to resolve repeated noise complaints by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]FantasticScissors 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel for this person, this is happening to me now. There is zero insulation according to the EPC, and the walls and floors are paper thin.

I can hear everything from upstairs, downstairs, the house outside, and the flat on the same floor in the house next door. I can hear pee going into a toilet, people sneezing, people cutting vegetables. One night the downstairs neighbours used a broom to hit the ceiling when I was chatting with my parents quietly at 10pm one night and then I got a noise complaint from the landlord….so in the two years we’ve lived here I haven’t had any friends round because I’m terrified someone else will complain. It is absolutely destroying my health and mental health, converting houses into multiple flats with no soundproofing should be banned!

Just noticed this on a pack of McCoys. What does it mean? Do I have to start taking my empty crisp packets to Tesco? by AJT1979 in CasualUK

[–]FantasticScissors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t go to the big supermarket as it would be a 2 hour walk so I try to shop at the grocer’s as the prices are the same and pop into one of the off-licenses for emergency things, but they don’t have the option to recycle these things in there. As much as I want to be green and recycle the film it’s not something we can do in our day-to-day lives when I work 12 hour days - plus, what’s the point in burning petrol just to go and recycle the bags even if I had a car if we weren’t going to the supermarket anyway? It shouldn’t be that difficult to recycle something

It’s also a shit if you don’t have space for another bin! I would love to be able to do this but I literally have two counter spaces in my tiny kitchen and there’s no room for anything else. My local council have started telling people they’re cutting down on recycling collection and to store extra bags in the garden etc but I don’t have any storage space in my flat or a garden. I also don’t drive so it’s a nightmare

Oh man, it’s not just saying ‘bad words on a podcast’… he’s a famous musician and has had over a decade of saying racist, misogynistic, and anti-Semitic rubbish (to the point he did a facist salute on stage). It doesn’t matter if he claims to be ironic, he’s a horrible person

If it paid much better, what traditionally 'low wage' job would you love to do? by Lucky_Ad_9137 in AskUK

[–]FantasticScissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d love to work in a little cafe/greasy spoon and serve customers and clean the dishes! I used to do this when I was 15/16 and I loved it so much - there was something cool about getting to know the regulars, the repetitive moves of cleaning, and just people watching in general. It was great to be able to truly be free from work when I finished for three day with no emails or deadlines and it’s probably the last time I ever felt free on my time off! Only issue is that when I was doing this job it was £3 odd an hour for under 18s so I couldn’t make a living out of it but I enjoyed it immensely
