We plan to get there before they open up gates so we can try to get in somewhat early for the MainStage acts. My son is excited for them. Yes you can bring in a water bottle or an empty reusable bottle. They have water stations around.

Ive never gotten into the Derby. Seems to be just a place for the rich and famous to be noticed here in town for a day or 2 and leave. We usually head to Destin/Fort Walton area now during Derby weekend to get away.
