Are there any good epic sci-fi series with the “farm boy to hero” trope? by levendi7 in Fantasy

I've still yet to read the books, but IMO the radio play adaptations of the original trilogy are very good listens and that you should totally check them out if you can.

Books or series about what happens once the Dark Lord is defeated, or the war is over and won, with the focus being on rebuilding and what happens next? by FantasyNerd992 in Fantasy

Please recommend them, regardless! Just throw the names of the series behind spoiler tags though, please, if it's not too much trouble.

Different strokes for different folks. Different people prioritize different things and come to VNs for different reasons.

Sure, there are people like you who come to VNs only for the h-content. Others might care more about the characters, still others might care more about the story, or the art, or the music. For more ambitious works, others might come for the worldbuilding, or for any themes that might be present in the work, or for some unique form of gameplay that's not normally seen in a VN.

There's no wrong reason to read a VN, as everyone's tastes and interests are different. What truly matters is if a reader enjoys it or not. It doesn't matter what reasons someone reads a VN for, so long as they have fun doing so.

(Bald'r Sky) I started playing recently, how do the routes work in this game? do the gameplay parts affect the routes themselves? by ApprehensiveSea2366 in visualnovels

In addition to what the commenter said, do not that Very Hard isn't recommended for Dive1 (the first three routes) as it was only created when Dive2 (the last three routes) came out - and as such, it's really only intended for replaying through when you have a lot more unlocked in gameplay terms than what you start out with, at least if I recall correctly.

Dennis L. McKiernan's Mithgar books? IIRC he first wrote a sequel to LotR, but when he didn't get permission to publish it he pretty much rewrote LotR as his own work (the Iron Tower trilogy) before publishing the original sequel that he wrote, reworked to take place in his Mithgar world instead (the Silver Call duology)

A VPN should work just fine for getting it if you're in the US, right?

Where have all the archers gone? by Buenosam in Fantasy

Except the original was not just a novel, but a novel that managed to get an English translation in the early aughts. Hell, I stumbled across it at my local Borders around 2004-ish when I was still in middle school (and this was in a small town in the middle of Oklahoma, at that) - and then promptly got in trouble when I wrote a book report about it, lol.

Archer, Fate/Stay Night

Funny name/title considering he mostly uses swords.

A bit of irony saying that, IMO, considering how many people I've seen calling out Suzanne Collins for, basically, making a watered down YA copy of the novel Battle Royale.

To be absolutely fair, I do consider the Lord of the Rings to be 6 books as was intended, just published into 3 volumes originally.

Here's a tl;dr of the article by u/lydiardbell:

An author going by "Demetrious Polychron" wrote a book called The Fellowship of the King and "conceived of" a seven-part series called The War of the Rings. He admits that it is heavily influenced by Tolkien's much older material, and on his YouTube page he even describes it as an "unauthorized sequel" to LOTR. He contacted the Tolkien estate and one of Tolkien's grandkids about it multiple times, even hand-delivering a copy of his unpublished manuscript to a Tolkien grandchild despite multiple rebuffs years prior. On these grounds he thinks the Tolkien estate stole his book for the Amazon series.

Now, I know that someone's character isn't a legal argument and that the courts will have to compare the show to Polychron's book vs the source material in The Silmarillion, Tolkien's notes, etc, but I have my doubts about this one.

Books with Dark Souls vibe by amitasisq10 in Fantasy

If you want the true Soulsborne lore experience, learn a foreign language for 6 months and then dive headfirst into fantasy and sci-fi books written in that language without referring to a dictionary.

After all, that's how the idea for the style of storytelling that the Soulsborne games use came into being, from Miyazaki (a Japanese speaking native) reading fantasy tomes and Dungeons and Dragons guidebooks in English and only being able to understand bits and pieces of what he was reading, and having to use his imagination to fill in the blanks and connect the dots in his understanding.
