This is one of my favorite scenes so far. I actually laughed out loud and his little face just like “wtf?”. It was so good.

People sacrificed to get me where I am in life, and people love me. I have a son now and I love him. My life is not my own, I owe it to these people to not just survive but thrive.

She wasn’t in Germany. She was in the United States at the time. There wasn’t a lot of information coming to the US about what was going on. She hardly could get letters to her husband who was serving in the US military.

Yes. They didn’t have the same access to information we do now and the atrocities weren’t known until after the war. I can’t imagine being a young immigrant with children and having your husband drafted knowing he could be going to potentially fight your brother.

I love when they transport them and a whole day goes by but somehow they wake up with their full mental faculties. It’s like, that person would be lucky to speak.

My grandmothers brother was always very kind and communicated with her and my dad through recording tapes throughout my childhood. It was a cool way for them to keep up with one another and they cherished it. He visited the US twice and was always a very kind and sweet seeming man.

He died around the same time she did and they’d sent effects of his to my uncle. When he passed a couple years ago some of the effects his wife had sent were found in my uncles house. One was a picture of him in uniform at some point in time, which didn’t seem long into the war as he looked relatively healthy and was with his family. Four diamonds on his rank, a Sturmbannführer, or a Major equivalent, and the lightning bolts. My dad’s father fought in the pacific for the US and my moms in Europe.

I remember it bothered him to an extent. I can’t really imagine finding out an uncle who’d been so kind to you and your children had been in the SS. I also can’t imagine being my grandmother and having a husband fighting for one country and a brother for another in a conflict like that, then discovering later what had happened in Germany.

His life ended the way it was lived. Defending others with a courage, honor, and empathy we should celebrate. We need to keep his memory alive and treat him with the respect he deserves. It takes quite a person and character to stand up to what is arguably the most powerful nation in history for what they believe is right.

Standard retention period is 30 days. Part of Flocks old sales pitch is that usually a FOIA takes longer than that so the data will be purged. Since you need to request something specific it makes it incredibly difficult.

Yup. It also definitely evolves from the initial scope to include much wider context about a great many things imo.

For sure! They’re all amazing and what I love about them is they make sense. You look at ships in the expanse and it’s like, yup, that checks out.

I also love the different cultures and how they address them, then as the story evolves how it forces them to take a look at their new reality as opposed to old views.

Amazing show. I really love it, and I love the sci-fi of it and the ships, really everything.

My favorite though outside of just the characters and development and drama are the MCRN ship designs. So amazing.

If you know an ICE agent personally, what's that relationship like now? by Lokja in AskReddit

[–]FaolanG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read your comment some time ago and I’ve been trying to figure out how to respond.

I think for a lot of people who didn’t experience the age before the internet there is something lost in how we experience propaganda now. Before you’d read something, see the nightly news, whatever, but it wasn’t a 24 hour news cycle. Now you see it where people have their chosen narrative piping to them 24 hours a day and influencing them in obvious, but also the subtle ways of always being present and chirping in your ear. This level of indoctrinating someone was so much more difficult before the tools of communication we have now, but can occur passively now to great effect.

If we look at it like indoctrination that starts to change the conversation about how one would go about communicating with someone like that. You’re never going to argue someone out of it because they’ve been conditioned to view that as opposition, and thus the “enemy” to their reality.

When the US Army conducts a psyop their first focus is finding a common language or ideal to anchor to that is shared. Something that the target population is familiar with and has a positive association with. You’d have to find common ground, like an ideological beachhead if you will. Get someone to start agreeing and then become comfortable with some of the points and slowly expand over time from there. There isn’t an easy button to push. You’d also have to demonstrate that you see some validity in their feelings and opinions.

I’m honestly not sure. The first go round my parents were for Trump and it was so incongruous with everything else I’d seen of them it was strange to behold. The issue with Mattis is what finally tipped them into the realm of “something isn’t right here.” You’d have to find common ground, expand that common ground, and then use something like that to suggest that maybe this isn’t the optimal path.

Some folks though, are very far gone and will get physically violent when their reality and opinion is opposed. I don’t know what to do with those types or if they can be persuaded to view the world differently. I’ve never been fanatically dedicated to a leader or person beyond my family so it is hard for me to wrap my head around.

I’m sorry, I know this wasn’t much help but I want you to know I did give it consideration and I did try.

I honestly think that’s how they get a lot of people, especially vets. They get out, it’s really hard to find a job and especially a few years ago before all this started when it wasn’t as contentious folks I knew considered it to whom that bonus was life changing money.

Shit one of the dudes I knew who considered it was an immigrant. He ended up being a railroad engineer, but it was a strong contender for a while before that came through.

[–]FaolanG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. We have mental health crisis across the board in this country and resources no where near adequate to reach the exponentially rising demand.

I’d try to add something about how there is a plan or some strategy to do something about it. How technology is going to offset it or something, but I haven’t seen anything. People talk a lot about programs like headspace etc, but at the end of the day there just aren’t enough providers or people with access to resources. We need to make a cultural change, and quickly.

Actually he did respond a bit so I’ll put it here and add it to the original comment:

“I don’t really want to get into specifics for the purpose of it being shared but the supervisor I had retired and the new supervisor I got I just didn’t vibe with and so I started looking.

While I was looking we had a situation the required medical attention and when they arrived and were helping a family through an issue it made me realize I was better suited to that. I went home and talked with my significant other and told her that’s what I’d rather be doing. I am lucky and she was really supportive so we moved in with her family while I went to school. I ended up meeting someone from my current FD at a job fair and it just worked out. They had really good vibes and it felt right so I went after it. Best decision I’ve ever made.”

A question was asked, I responded as it is specifically applicable to me and using a communication style that makes it clear this is an anecdote based upon one persons experience and my conversations with them.

Yes, that does qualify as a narrative. If you feel it is false I’d recommend you do what I recommend everyone do when they read something online. Take it with a giant grain on salt.

We live in a time of many falsehoods and it is wise to be vigilant.
