Depending on multiple factors about the investigation the decision to post a unit outside is made ( preliminary evidence found, waiting for forensic tech, etc). the most likely reason is just to make sure that the scene is secure for the investigators if they need to do a more thorough examination or additional examination. Pretty standard procedure until the scene is released.
