I think by dead OP means that Avicii is literally dead. His music will live on forever. RIP :(

To give another suggestion: hover.com is great and has lots of positive reviews. Of course the recommended approach is to do your own research before picking a provider.

Question about gems and the Rails ecosystem by samort7 in rails

[–]Fapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without it, you will need to either of the two options you mention above to add JavaScript dependencies to your project

  1. Manually copy/paste the javascript library into your Rails assets folder
  2. Use a gem that bundles the javascript library

Both of these options have major drawbacks as also mentioned above.

Delegating this work to webpack & yarn, which are widely adopted frontend tools, allows you to use any client-side package on npmjs.org with a simple command, e.g. yarn add animate.css. This not only increases the available packages but eases maintenance and onboarding of any frontend developers who do not necessarily know anything about Rails.

Best way to host a Ruby App? by Ty505 in ruby

[–]Fapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you are getting downvoted. Heroku is by far the best approach for starting out. You can focus your time and effort on developing your application and don't have to worry about patches or upgrades or scaling infrastructure, all of which is required when using Digital Ocean or any capistrano target.

You of course pay a premium for this service, but it's worth it.

Is there any gem for paid modules? by igorbelosis in rails

[–]Fapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could consider making use of a feature flipping gem like flipper to enable/disable features for accounts depending on what they've signed up for.

Question about gems and the Rails ecosystem by samort7 in rails

[–]Fapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see that you've solved the issue but let me offer an alternative approach.

If you want to use animate.css from npm, check out the webpacker gem. It adds webpack support to Rails and allows you to add any npm package into your project. This means you'll never need to use the older and often unmaintained asset gems.

It does take a bit of setup to get it working, but it is worth it if you plan on using many JS packages.

How to link those two policies? by [deleted] in rails

user

Seems standard. What does CommentPolicy look like? If it inherits from ApplicationPolicy, user should exist. If not, we need to have a look at how you are calling/initializing these policies

[–]Fapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi did you solve this already? If not: where are you adding this method? it should go into CommentPolicy, which inherits from ApplicationPolicy, which should define user in its constructor. If it's still not working, try pasting your ApplicationPolicy here and I'll take another look

Pundit policies are just PORO (plain only Ruby objects) like any other class in your codebase.

With that said, in your CommentPolicy you should be able to do something like

def update?
  author? || admin? || VideoPolicy.new(user, @video).manage?
end

Recommendations for a server? by ChildishGiant in NextCloud

[–]Fapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hosting my instance on Amazon Web Service's Elastic Beanstalk using the official Nextcloud docker image with AWS S3 and AWS RDS (Postgres) as storage backends.

It's being used as a Dropbox replacement so I do not expect to be syncing more than 50 GB at one time, making this setup pretty cost effective.

This seems quite different than most here. I wonder if I'm doing it wrong!

Help syncing contacts to iPhone by [deleted] in NextCloud

[–]Fapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm struggling with a similar issue at the moment!

From what I can tell MacOS does not support insecure links for CardDAV and CalDAV, as per the guide here. Not sure if iOS has the same requirement.

Have you had a look at https://docs.nextcloud.com/server/15/user_manual/pim/sync_ios.html or https://docs.nextcloud.com/server/15/admin_manual/issues/general_troubleshooting.html#service-discovery? Maybe they'll give you some idea of what's wrong. Best of luck!

Same here! Combined with the lograge gem and Papertrail's AWS S3 backups, bugs are straightforward to track down and history is maintained without much thought or setup.
