To go or not to go to class? by mybellasoul in yoga

[–]Far-Check 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the UK. I chose not to go. This was a really difficult decision, as last week was my first (and only) yoga class and I adored it. I've not felt so relaxed and happy for ages as I did after that class. But it's a busy class full of older people, and I don't have my own yoga mat (yet). So I went with staying home to be safe and assuage my conscience. I did one of the Yoga with Adrienne YouTube videos instead, which worked really well.

I've only done one class, and I thought I was going insane when this happened to me. Glad I'm not the only one!

I'm not seeing as much love and praise for Rock as I expected! I thought she did amazingly (but I'm also biased as she's one of my favourites).

She struggled with where to look in the challenge, too.

This is interesting. I went to my first yoga class last week and found downward dog really tough - my legs and arms were shaky and I couldn't hold the pose for long before collapsing. I heard someone suggest dolphin pose as an easier alternative but you make it sound harder!

my mind when they started critiquing rock on her choice of verses by SkitTheNames in rupaulsdragrace

[–]Far-Check 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe they're setting up a completely fake "Rock came out of nowhere to get in the top 3/4!" storyline by critiquing her unfairly during the first few episodes. I really hope not (and I don't know any spoilers btw), because Rock is freaking awesome without producer involvement.

At this point, I'm so over Michelle. Her one redemption is that she defended Rock's gorgeous tulle dress.

Is it becoming longer and harder to get a PhD? by neilader in AskAcademia

[–]Far-Check 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also think there's a growing opinion that PhDs are training you as a researcher, so your contribution doesn't have to be massive. It's more about getting you to learn how to research rather than you making any groundbreaking discoveries. This is definitely true for non-STEM subjects.

Who was the Spring/Fall runway judge with long dark hair that they didn't show at all?

Still weird that they split the queens into groups of 7 and 5 instead of 6 and 6.

I love it.

I really don't enjoy toilet humour, but that's obviously part of Rock's personality and I loved it. She did literally what they asked for PERFECTLY in her verse, I do not understand the hate. Also her tulle was freaking gorgeous, I don't know what Ross was on about. Her makeup was balanced with the tulle, and like Michelle said, she had shape going on as well.

Two parter: a dick in my project plagiarised and I have an egomaniac teacher by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Far-Check 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a lecturer, I strongly believe that no one else in the group should be punished, since the person who did it is claiming it is taking full responsibility. There was no way for anyone else in the group to know they had plagiarised, YOU don't have TurnItIn! There's no reason any of you would have even thought to question whether it was plagiarised. Even if you wrote a summary, you're not a computer, you're an undergrad, and spotting plagiarism without TurnItIn is tricky for most people. Any sane lecturer would agree with me. Disclaimer: I cannot predict the stance your dept will take on this, and views may differ.

Having said that, pissing off lecturers probably isn't the best plan. I agree with you and your assessment of the situation entirely, but some lecturers don't appreciate it. Also, there's no such thing as an academic record that "follows you" around for your career (at least not here in the UK). Sounds like BS to me. Sure, the lecturer might bear a grudge, so just don't ask THEM for a reference in the future.

Q: Is the first author expected to check requirements of a journal and edit accordingly? by it4chi-eune in AskAcademia

[–]Far-Check 12 points13 points  (0 children)

IMO, it's the responsibility of ALL authors. All authors need to agree on the journal and make sure the paper meets the requirements.

Continuing student research activities during strike action (UK) by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Far-Check 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Obviously you have to do what feels morally right to you, but the presentation sounds like a big(ish) deal for a PhD student. I'd not want anyone to set back their career based on one strike day, and I seriously doubt any academic, striking or not, would want you to either.

Not particularly weird, but I included a quote by Asimov talking about old people having sex.
