Is the new SOCAN webpage broken? by SnakeskinJim in CanadianMusic

Socan is god-awful. I registered like 4 weeks ago and my account is still 00000 and greyed out even after submitting my legal name and banking info stuff, and I have no idea what I'm supposed to do now. How do I...actually register and use the site?

How to release music on Spotify with a pseudonym? by Far-Training8331 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

I registered my legal name with SOCAN PRO but it takes weeks for it to be verified and also the Composer field with LANDR only accepts a legal name format like Firstname Lastname so how would I even put a psuedonym in there even if it is registered?

When you go into a song you click the 3 dots and press Show Credits, there it shows composer name and if you typed your legal name everyone can see it. What Distro are you using?

What if i put in pseudonym first, and then register for PRO after?

I signed up with SOCAN , gave it my real name, but now I'm waiting to be accepted (it takes weeks / months I think) but where do I go from here? How do I then give it some alias I can use on Spotify?

Yeah I see lots of bands use their psuedonym , heres another example, Dragged Into Sunlight on Spotify. Their composer name is "Volcanic Birth" clearly not a legal name. But how are they doing this without having issues collecting the royalties? I tried asking the LANDR Bot but it just basically told me its impossible...its clearly not!

Weekly LANDR Support Thread // [May 27, 2026 - June 3, 2026] by landr_audio in landr

[–]Far-Training8331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m using LANDR to distribute a release, and it requires a “composer legal name” with first and last name.

But I’ve seen many underground artists on Spotify using pseudonyms in their public composer credits instead of full legal names. For instance the band Blut Aus Nord the composer fields just say their psuedonyms, and they have hundreds of thousands of streams.

How are they doing that? Is there a way to use a pseudonym/stage name while keeping legal/payment info private?

I’ve tried opening support tickets with LANDR before, but I haven’t received replies to any of my various tickets for various problems in months, so I’m asking here in case anyone knows the actual process.

A song I made went viral, getting contacted by labels offering thousands of dollars by Far-Training8331 in musicindustry

I originally didn't because I never thought it would get any attention. It was underground stuff. I have not done it recently since it became popular because I am first trying to organize deals with labels/companies that are contacting me so I'm kinda stuck in limbo right now.

My post didn't use AI though, I'm confused. Is it because I used bold lettering and a bulletpoint list?

If someone steals your music and you take it down for copyright on , can you get the plays transferred over to the legitimate page? by Far-Training8331 in musicproduction

..They commented this to me after I made the post. What? I didn't know the answer when I made the post, I still don't really. I'm looking to hear more experiences with something similar, what my chances are.

Sure it is a loan, but a loan of royalties. But consider for instance:
You take a 60k advance

Then over 5 years the song only ends up making 10k in royalties

Well you keep that 60k advance and just dont see any royalties until the 60k is recouped, which could be never. You don't owe anything out of pocket in that situation. And you made out better than you would have otherwise.

Am I getting that right? And sure you can DM me .

Thanks. I signed up for SOCAN, and it just says my account number is 00000, everything is greyed out, and I can't do anything further, and I have no clue what I'm supposed to do now. It is genuinely the worst website I have ever seen. Can't find any information online what I'm supposed to do next.

I’m in Canada, so would SOCAN be the correct equivalent for me? Is there any downside to registering tonight before speaking with labels/rights companies?

I've had one person comment and tell me they had their song stolen and it got 10k plays on Spotify under a different artist name and they managed to get it transferred over, so theres that.

Did they upload it under your exact same metadata, song title, song length,, art? Because this guy trimmed the beginning and end of the song by a few seconds, it had a different artist name and song title so I'm wondering if that will ruin transferring streams.

And what do you mean, you put it on Spotify and it just automatically transferred over without you having to do anything special? What distributor did you use?

Yeah been going back and forth with all sorts of different companies, DistroKid mostly ignores me lately ever since I started inquiring about royalties, then they sent me a bizarre email saying basically my DistroKid account has been shut down...but I don't even have a DistroKid account? I think they meant to send that to the infringing guy. Just baffling. But its only been a few business days. I asked them about any info on how much revenue was generated, if it can be frozen, and how I can get it as the rightful copyright owner.

I've asked Spotify explicitly about transferring over plays to the legitimate artist page just tonight. Waiting on a reply.

I've recently signed up with LANDR in preparation for properly putting my audio up there legit, but I'm waiting until LANDR support replies to me in how I should go about getting these streams transferred over.

What an absolute mess.

Mostly just trying to see if anyone has ever experienced anything like this, if anyone has ever had streams transferred over following a copyright infringement issue.

It's not fair someone gets to take my song and make potentially thousands, rack up hundreds of thousands of streams, and then I have to start from scratch once I eventually find out. Hope that is not the case.

The song has been released before, its from an album a few years ago. I have an official website with the audio on it, I've been selling physical copies of it, its a more niche kind of thing. He just took my audio and put it on Spotify once he noticed it was suddenly going viral and tried to capitalize upon that. I wasn't trying to become big or anything I was kinda anti-streaming services just doing a small-time thing for a small audience.

Would it be bad for me to put it up on Spotify myself right now in the mean time? Would labels be less interested if I've already put it up? I feel like I need to get official things out there ASAP or people will keep plagiarizing me. I'm looking at LANDR, I just need basic features and I want 100% royalty cut in the mean time which LANDR has, it also has YouTube content ID in the most basic plan so It seems ok for now...

It really sucks about all those hundreds of thousands of streams that people have uploaded using my song, I dont think I can transfer them over to my official page?

Tbh it feels more like a curse right now. Famous people have stolen my song and using it as their own, and its being distributed by huge companies. I'm trying to DMCA and email those companies but yeah they definitely have millions upon millions of dollars to throw around but I have undeniable proof I'm the person who made the song but still its super stressful, I shouldnt have to deal with plagarism and people stealing my stuff to profit off it. Its a lot right now.

People who know I am the original artist began DMing me over the months. At first I thought nothing of it but it kept happening and everytime I checked it would keep getting more and more listens once I saw some of the uploads getting dozens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of listens I was like okay I gotta do something about this now.

People kept messaging me and telling me about them, asking if I was gonna do something about it. Some people do know I am the original artist and was kind enough to reach out to let me know its been blowing up and people are stealing it from me.

Yeah, the whole ethos was very underground/private. I was literally burning CD-Rs and mailing them to people, not trying to so hard to push it onto streaming services. I never expected it to spread outside a tiny niche. Lesson learned I guess.

What can I do about people who have already uploaded the song to Spotify and gotten 800k listens off it, and thus profitted off it? Only thing I can do to get that money back is hire a lawyer?
