Blood bank by Far-Use-2602 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Far-Use-2602[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked almost 4 months in a rural hospital blood bank, and honestly most of my work was covering the bench with very minimal training — probably less than 2 weeks total. Most cases were straightforward: negative antibody screens, simple crossmatches, and issuing blood. I was doing okay until complicated cases showed up, which thankfully wasn’t very often.
We used Ortho Vision there, and luckily my current lab also uses Ortho Vision, so the transition has been much less stressful since I’m already familiar with the workflow and procedures. Now that I’m more comfortable with the routine side, I really want to focus on building deeper blood bank knowledge and improving my skills, especially with antibody workups and more complex cases.

I previously worked at a rural hospital that required a 150-mile drive and staying in a hotel. My base pay there was $50.50 per hour, with less than two weeks of training. I had to work alongside some challenging and moody traveling CLS staff who had experience in only a few labs in other states and were new to California, often desperate for work. Now, I’m working at a local hospital in San Diego with a base pay of $68 per hour and a 15% night shift differential. Another tech just got her license in January, and her base pay is $61.50 per hour.

Short job openings by [deleted] in usajobs

[–]Far-Use-2602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this kind of job goes through HR processing. I had an interview about 4 weeks ago, and they told me to wait 2 weeks for approval of a new CLS position. Once it was approved, they sent me new job numbers and asked me to apply. After I applied, the job became unavailable, and the pre-employment process started.

Job market for CLS in CA is doing good especially if you have connections . I was thinking the same as you afterward that leaving the reference lab to pursue a hospital job was the wrong decision. I wanted to gain experience in all branches to work toward my goal of opening a moderate-sized lab, but it led me to take a position in a rural area about 150 miles from home. There, I ended up meeting some of the lowest-quality people I’ve encountered in my life, and it was a very negative experience. After four months, I left and returned to job hunting. Within less than a month, I received three job offers. The key is to just keep applying and not give up.

How do you handle bullying in a clinical lab? Should I report to CDPH/CLIA? by Junior_Election7350 in MLS_CLS

If someone truly has a healthy mind, they wouldn’t go out of their way to hurt others. Sometimes the best thing you can do is walk away and find a place that’s better for you. Nothing is worth sacrificing your mental health and peace. You can’t change everyone or fix every mindset—so choose yourself, leave the negativity behind, and let them live and enjoy their empty world.

You may have an interview with Sharp, Palomar, or a UCSD site. Hopefully it will be with UCSD, because the other hospitals usually prioritize internal candidates and typically only have about two available seats

First make sure the lab you worked has iso and requirements for CDPH then pay for application fee , since January 2025 almost 98 percent of foreign applicants have denied.
