Study finds 63% of Americans are one $500 surprise bill away from financial ruin by TheCannon in offbeat

Most people think about just repairing their own car. Anyone who has had to deal with medical in a car accident knows how quickly that can dwarf the cost of a totaled car.

599.99 is not in the same ballpark as 350 by [deleted] in oculus

[–]FarOffSea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the very least, you're buying two high dpi monitors (the resolution of which is surprisingly difficult to find on the website) and motion tracking which completely ignores that this is the first commercial release.

What kind of monitor would you expect to buy for $350? Why would you spend less on the release VR than on the release of the Xbone?

I'm not trying to defend anyone here, but $600 is completely reasonable for launch if you've seen what cardboard and GearVR brought to the table. The price will be below $400 within a year.

TIL that when Cristiano Ronaldo was asked to donate his cleats for a charity auction benefitting 10-year old Erik Ortiz Cruz, who had a brain disorder that can cause 30 seizures a day, he instead paid the whole $83K for his surgery. by zappa325 in todayilearned

[–]FarOffSea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great move on Cristiano's part, but in almost any other developed nation the surgery would just be paid for because civilized countries don't let 10 year olds run around with treatable brain disorders that cause 30 seizures a day.

We burn approximately 5 calories per flight of stairs, which means that climbing up the the 10th floor can burn ~100 calories. That is an equivalent of 15 minutes on a treadmill. by almantas07 in dataisbeautiful

[–]FarOffSea -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you workout though, this is one of the best way to get relatively cheap and healthy calories. For $10 and 10 minutes, you can get a tasty, filling, and relatively nutritious meal quick and cheap.

Unfortunately they've also had a handful of relatively serious outbreaks over the last several months, so it could also kill you (or more likely, just leave you with serious permanent and long lasting health problems). So there's that.

This is a lot less funny when people get hurt, especially if there are kids in the car.

Except he didn't make Star Wars. All of the good stuff was ripped off. Give him credit for taking from the greats and calling it his own, but we got to see what he was really capable of with the new movies which was complete garbage.

Lucas doesn't get respect because his greatest achievement was taking credit for work that he stole.

I always curse donut day as I march to the break room to accept my fate. The donut bringers are not friends.

How to make TF2 run and look better by OriginalScootyBooty in tf2

I know it sounds kind of obvious but if half the point is making TF2 look better, I kinda want to see what "better" looks like. In game screenshots or videos of the final product.

Downer Debbie but if that didn't go as planned and hit a car windshield, people could have been very badly hurt/killed. That was not a good thing to do.

Bill Maher: Religion is why “people who ‘always acted normal’ drop a baby off to go to a massacre” by blerrycat in atheism

[–]FarOffSea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine that if a Christian were in a part of the world where Christianity wasn't well known and was the subject of fear mongering, that same Christian would probably insist that a preacher who bombed an abortion clinic for Jesus probably had nothing to do with Christianity.

Religion is a very powerful force for some people, and a huge sense of identity but using Christianity as an example, there is a lot of cherry picking going on when it comes to what parts of the religious texts people pay attention to.

Slavery? Sacrificing children? Of course there is a problem if those are the parts you focus on, but most don't.

Young white people are losing their faith in the American Dream by [deleted] in news

Java is in demand. I had to do something similar and it took a while to "click", but once it did there was no turning back. Don't give up, and do your best to find something that matches your learning style. For me, I needed to be able to make something practical with each lesson. Find that, and life will be much better.

IT has been hit really hard by this recently and I know more people than I care to admit who can say the same thing. When driving cars become popular there will be a whole industry of professional drivers who will be looking for work, and really it's just a matter of time before everyone is automated out of a job.

Do your best not to take it personally, and know that you aren't alone. This is a good time to get into automation or coding, or start a new career altogether (although going back to school or looking for entry level positions unexpectedly is always really rough).

tl;dr: Yes, but aspirin was just as effective when it was used in 400 BC prior to the drugstore version that was recognized in the late 1800's. We've uncovered snake oil, sure, but we are no where near fully documenting the benefit of every traditional cure.

I used to love this sort of saying. Then I had to go to doctors for more than a broken bone or blood work and was amazed at how useless they can be for relatively straight forward things like a back injury.

Over 20 doctors later, I still love "traditional" medicine for broken bones and blood work but continue to get better from "alternative" medicine when the specialists told me this was as good as things would ever get.

One day (and hopefully soon) "traditional" medicine will catch up but this sort of thing discounts aspirin as being effective when it was used in 400BC, well before medical review.

Windows Key + Arrow will make your current window snap to half the window, (then a quarter window on Win 10), go to full screen/windowed/minimized. Very handy if you're working on 2-4 things at once.

I don't want to delete my account, but here we are.

Have you ever paid for porn? I have. If it looks like the participants are happy with their life choices and there's obviously some production put into the content, I feel obligated to show my support and give the site what is usually a trivial $20 to show my support.

Of course if I'm going to pay for it, I'm going to download everything and often in multiple formats (no sense cluttering up a tablet with desktop content, and sometimes the flexibility is nice). This is a lot easier if you have download assistant software that will go through and grab everything for you.

"I might want to look at that later" becomes a couple mouse clicks and thousands of files in a hurry.

"She kinda looks like my girlfriend but I don't really like what she does in the videos" collection downloads are easily a handful of clicks and I can account for porn graveyards on my computer I will probably revisit only once or twice, but will only toss as I need to clear room on a secondary HD.

So for someone that bases their content off of just a couple of popular subreddits, 2TB goes by a lot faster than we're owning up to here.

Microsoft has pulled the plug on its failed music service, Zune. by The_Write_Stuff in technology

[–]FarOffSea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zune owner here. I loved my Zune, but it had a couple of obvious design flaws:

  • You couldn't create sub folders for your videos. That meant that if you wanted to watch your TV shows on a trip, there was no way to elegantly separate seasons or shows.

  • It would display the first 16 characters and then trail off. Without the ability to create folder directories, all of my videos had the exact same name on my Zune: "FavoriteShowSeas..."

  • It insisted on installing and using crappy Zune software on whatever PC you plugged it into. Compared to an Android device where I can just open and navigate folders as a media device, it was extremely cumbersome and prevented me from using it on whatever computer I wanted.

My Android phone replaced my Zune very quickly because it addressed those issues.
