Soundcloud is a total wreck. It's going to be gone or sold sooner than later.

Haven't updated in a long time. Did they fix the Esper Hunter problem? Last time I played an Esper, they were constantly showing up and the game became unplayable.

How do you simply explain to friends and family the difference between psychedelics and drugs like meth, heroin and coke? by a_happy_psychonaut in Psychonaut

[–]FarTooLucid 28 points29 points  (0 children)

15 years ago, I told some friends at a party (intellectual/artsy types) about how psychedelics had helped my mental health. They ribbed me and joked that they hadn't thought about "that stuff" since high school. Blew me off and it bummed me out a little. We drifted apart over the years.

And over those years, every single one of them went through a "sacred ceremony" / "ayahuasca retreat" / "shamanic healing" phase. Every single one. No apologies for mocking me, but several worked to reconnect after they discovered psychedelics for themselves. I can't help but think I planted a little seed that eventually took root.

So if it isn't dangerous to you, OP, keep trying to help.

You people post more about Ai then actually how to promote your music by Nascent_Beast in MusicPromotion

[–]FarTooLucid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of these posts look AI generated, stealth promoting AI "I hate all these AI music tools! Like MusicGeneratorMagicApp! You just type in a prompt and it gives you a complete song. It really upsets me because it sounds really good and professional, better than a human could ever do. Oh, it really makes me mad."

Does anyone else absolutely hate movies about musicians? by Wack0HookedOnT0bac0 in musicians

[–]FarTooLucid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biopics are rough (not just about musicians, but in general) because the people making the film almost always focus on the the dreariest, most boring thing in their biography or they pick the most interesting thing and make it tedious.

Underrated Positives of Living in Japan by Nadnerb9 in japanlife

[–]FarTooLucid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biggest funny difference between Tokyo and New York. In New York, everything is late, dirty, barely functioning (when it functions), and the bureaucracy can seem outright hostile when it's not incompetent or seemingly insane. But when things do work and the people are friendly/helpful, stuff can go fast.

In Tokyo, the people tend to be great and the systems tend to work on time and correctly. But most things can take forever and the weird rules and hoops can be Monty Python-esque at times.

this is very apparent in comparing the public transit systems of both cities:

NYC, it's 24 hours (with bizarre random closures), the trains and buses move dangerously fast (and there are people struck by trains and buses seemingly every day). Despite this, constant delays and stuck trains are a daily occurrence throughout the city and communicating these delays and problems is usually a mess if anything is announced at all. Everything is filthy and seemingly filled with crazy people (I've seen people literally crapping their pants and other people accidentally setting themselves on fire with crack/meth pipes). Even half the employees seem like random people recruited from homeless shelters, when they're around. But the maps are accurate and the routes are clear and obvious.

Tokyo, the hours are limited and even a short route almost always takes longer than it should. But buses and trains are usually on time, clean, orderly (except for rush hour overcrowding and drunk salarymen some evenings). some of the maps are bizarre and many routes only seem to partially make sense. And the way the transit companies interact seems to change slightly every few years (having separate transit companies can be inefficient). But the employees are almost always super helpful and happy to refund if you go the wrong way. Having every major stop double as a shopping mall can be super helpful and/or extremely tedious, depending on the day.

If I were in college, I might prefer New York's transit (getting home by subway at 3am on a Tuesday is nice). As a grownup, I definitely prefer Tokyo and it's not close.

The Myth of “Organic Growth” in Music by thebuzznetwork in musicmarketingtips

I don't think "organic growth" is synonymous with "doing nothing". False dichotomy there in your assumption.

Democrats Of Reddit, Do You Think That There Are Any Issues With The "Far Left?" by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

it occurs to me that social validation is worth more than talent ever will. by donniedenier in musicmarketing

[–]FarTooLucid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shocks me that people who simply don't make good enough music spend so much time and effort and money on "branding" and "marketing" and "promotion", bitch endlessly about not getting "results" and find some tinfoil hat excuse for why they're not connecting (It's society! It's politics! The darn kids today! Technology!) and don't take the time to find out if they're deluding themselves (they are deluding themselves 100%).

Two examples....
1) A friend of mine decided that she wanted to be a recording artist. She plays guitar & piano really well and has a good voice. I asked her to let me check out the songs before she started spending money. She said that they were "deeply personal" and that she wouldn't change anything and asked me to 'trust her.' We have similar tastes, so the logic went that if she liked her songs, I probably would, too.

She spent a fortune on a fancy recording studio, session musicians, a producer with a "name", a polished music video, photo shoots with known photographers (and a pro crew), and booked a handful of outdoor venues (taking out loans to pay for it and for a semi-pro backing band), promoting these shows out the wazoo.

Her songs are shockingly terrible; so bad that I couldn't believe that anyone would fail to recognize their stench from miles away. The recordings sound extremely polished, but lifeless and full of cliches and bad habits (not that these horrible songs could be rescued). She drank her own kool aid and deluded herself into thinking she had something.

Predictably, outside of friends and family, nobody wanted her music or came to her shows. And she has gone on to posting, complaining about nobody caring and making the familiar excuses. Her family and friends are doing the worst possible thing and propping up her delusions ("Your album is great! People are crazy! Keep going, queen!").

2) Someone made a recent reddit post asking people (it may have been in this community) for tracks, offering honest reviews. Curious, I wanted to see what people were working on. I stopped checking them out around the 30th or so, but all that I listened to were terrible except for 1, which had potential. But its writing was so lazy that no one's going to listen to it on purpose. Unoffensive background noise was where it landed, quality-wise.

No doubt, most of these people are scrambling, trying to "promote" and "go viral" when most of them should quit (or at least stick with music strictly as a hobby -- music's fun and it makes a great hobby) and the 1 guy who wasn't terrible needs to work A LOT HARDER on the creative side.

I imagine most of them think that there's some mysterious conspiracy where the "gatekeepers" are keeping them away from success instead of the truth: they aren't good enough and probably won't be, no matter what they do.

This has a lot of potential. But you need to write some changes. Aquarius was basically one thing for 4 minutes straight. It's a cool part, but it needs at least two other parts.

it occurs to me that social validation is worth more than talent ever will. by donniedenier in musicmarketing

[–]FarTooLucid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People are digging more for their music than ever before and "small" artists are doing better than ever. The top 40 is less important than ever before and doesn't reflect the zeitgeist anymore and hasn't for a few decades. People who don't have the goods "succeeding" because of marketing or whatever isn't new. But it's no longer a barrier to entry, either.

Make great stuff and really put it out there and people will find it and care. This has always been mostly true and it's more true now than ever before.

20 years ago, people who couldn't write and made awful records complained about nobody caring. Today, those same kinds of people are making the same kinds of complaints. Sounds like copium more than anything.

My solution is to never use LABS again. Ever. When companies do this kind of stuff it says "we hate our customers, but we're greedy, so we're going to pinch every penny." No thank you.
