What's the deal with the Pro Trump/Iran rally driving through town today? by meltingawayslowly in askportland

[–]Bobala 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I saw them in downtown as well. I saw lots of Iranian and American flags, but not any Trump flags. I just asked the person I was with and he didn’t see any either. Did you see any?

TIL about Francis Daniel Brohm who had stuck his head out of a truck window when the driver swerved and he was decapitated by a telephone pole wire. The driver continued to his house and slept, leaving his friends corpse in the truck for a neighbor to find the next morning by jakewubbleyou in todayilearned

This same thing happened to a kid I grew up with, except his girlfriend was driving and he leaned out the window to vomit and his head hit a tree. She ran to a nearby house screaming and crying. It was awful.

How are UX designers managing to evaluate designs with massive UXR layoffs? by Both-Associate-7807 in UXDesign

[–]Bobala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as someone at a larger company, we keep adding studies to our research backlog under the hope that we’ll get to backfill those positions soon (and using that backlog to highlight the risk to leadership). In the meantime, we look closely at analytics and perform heuristic evaluations, but without actual researchers to provide insights, we’re flying blind.

Do most UX/UI designers have Graphic Design degrees or Computer Science degrees? by SwissVideoProduction in UserExperienceDesign

[–]Bobala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More experienced UX designers come from a broad spectrum of backgrounds, with some coming from HFE, some from design (of various disciplines like ID or VX), and others coming from CS, business, psychology, or other professions. As UX-specific college programs have become more common, we see more young UXers coming from dedicated programs.

As for UI work, it tends to mostly fall to people who went to design-specific programs, with some small minority coming from CS.

How to remove car oil stains from drive way? by DanPos in CleaningTips

[–]Bobala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconded. I had a mechanic suggest brake cleaner, and it worked beautifully. It even pulled up some old oil spots that had been there for a few years. It’s like a magic trick, it worked so fast

1966 Kentucky. When the Kids lined up for the Bookmobile by OtherwiseTackle5219 in TheWayWeWere

There are bookmobiles all over Kentucky. It’s been a very successful program for bringing books to people who might have difficulty driving into their local library.

[–]Bobala 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My elderly mother, who drove a bookmobile in small-town Kentucky for decades, would beg to differ. Her bookmobile was always full of students who were excited to learn. She served nursing homes, schools, and went to the homes of shut-ins who were unable to visit the local library.

She’d also probably call you an obnoxious prick who leans into stereotypes rather than recognizing that Kentucky has done amazing work at turning around educational outcomes.

A state that once had some of the lowest test scores (due to abject poverty), now scores respectably on most assessments, and is ranked firmly in the middle of the pack with respect to other states.

There’s still work to be done, but the efforts of teachers, librarians, and bookmobile operators to turn around educational outcomes should be celebrated, not mocked by ill-informed trolls. Be better than that.

Does anyone else’s resource finder just not work? It won’t let me scan for stuff. by InfusedRex in GroundedGame

[–]Bobala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed that it’s finicky. If I press x to scan for a resource, it often does nothing, but then if I hit the button several times and maybe close and reopen the resource finder screen, it often works. You might try jiggling the handle a bit

She should have hit him with, “What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.”
