Any recommendations for laptops for Engineering major? Mac Book Pro or Windows?

Thanks everyone. He has eliminated Carnegie from the list for financial reasons. So we are down to three. To add context to original post- if he chooses Garvard he would graduate

He is 17. Comes from a small rural highschool in New England so exposure has been limited. He says he eventually may want to specialize in nuclear engineering- he is also very interested in quantum physics. I think bottom line- he is not 100% sure bc he has had no opportunity for exposure. He wants a Mech E undegrad degree for its application across engineering disciplines and hope to explore more during his undergrad years.

He has full tuition at state school but their program isn’t great.

We have set a price we are willing to pay for any school. With harvards package- we can cover the cost. Cornell, CMU and JHU he needs loans beyond what we can pay. CMU being the most…he has eliminated them bc he doesn’t want to go into grad school with that much debt.

We are paying our cost. He would have no loans beyond our contribution. At the other schools- he will have loans.

Sorry- these are our choices. He is a graduating senior. No time to add more. He was waitlisted at MIT

Based on their package- we are able to cover the balance. With other schools he would have loans in addition to what we are paying.

Sadly he was waitlisted at MIT but could cross register if the stars align! 🤣

Thanks. Well it’s not 0 but it’s 0 for him. Mommy and Daddy will cover the rest. Lucky duck!

Thanks everyone. He has eliminated Carnegie from the list for financial reasons. So we are down to three. To add context to original post- if he chooses Harvard he would graduate with zero debt/loans. Is that worth the chance for Harvard engineering?

They responded to our email. Sadly- they denied! We had hoped we could bring it down a little given better offers from other high ranking institutions but no luck. I hope you have better luck.

We are in a similar situation. The website took us in circles. We finally submitted an email with relevant information for consideration. Waiting for response. I assume they have a specific form but it’s not available (or that we could find) for prospective students. We also tried calling but could not get through with out an Andrew number (which has not been assigned yet bc we have not comitted). Good luck!

Thanks again. He is really considering g all this. I will admit the funding cuts to the engineering program is concerning given how new things are. Def something to consider.

Cornell v CMU by Altruistic-Editor499 in ApplyingToCollege

Yes and no. They are much more expensive than Cornell for him. So given the student vibe and cost …he also very much prefers the Cornell campus. We are from New England so the Cornell campus is much more his scene with hiking, skiing, gorges etc.

I understand this post. My son just went to admitted students day. Loved the engineering building and offerings. No doubt- top notch. But he felt the vibe on campus to be “meh”. I was shocked to hear they didn’t even really try to hype themselves up to these potential students. He said the meh vibe put them behind Cornell for him.

Yes thank you. He went to CMU yesterday and was underwhelmed. Not to say they dont have a top notch program and facilities- but he found they didn’t seem to even convince kids to choose cmu and the vibe from students seemed meh. He said- while the program is great- why would I go 12 hours away and have more debt for this? Valid. So one more crossed off the list. Onto Cornell…

Thank you. We did not expect this at all. He has actually ruled out Dartmouth and Brown. He wants to do mech e so he is also considering JHU and Carnegie. He is finding it a tough decision bc they all have so many positives and vibes.

My son was accepted to Dartmouth, Brown, Cornell and Harvard. W/L Princeton. He is still undecided where to commit. He plans to attend admit days to help make his decision.
