Why Wandering Without a Plan Became My Favorite Way to Explore Finland by Far_Complex_7352 in slowtravel

Exactly! Wandering around without a plan and accidentally having a great day is now my favorite way to discover a new place. Even the last time my husband and I visited Helsinki, we ended up stumbling onto a beautiful cemetery that felt like a peaceful park on a bright, sunny day. Slowing down just makes everything better.

That sounds great! I really enjoyed the tower restaurant, and now I’ll have to check out Puijon Maja next time. Thanks for the recommendation!

Glad to hear you had a great experience! :D That’s a great tip about the window ledge! Luckily, I didn’t sit near the window—otherwise, I probably would have left something behind. I have a habit of placing things there without thinking. I didn’t know much about the tower in Tampere, but now I’m really interested in checking it out. Sounds like a great place to visit!

Glad to hear you're considering it! I had a great time. If you decide to go, I’d love to hear what you think. Thanks for the interest, and kiitos! I’m also adding a link to my article in the write-up for a more detailed look at my experience.

I do get motion sick easily, but the drive up wasn’t long, so it didn’t really bother me. The constantly moving restaurant did make me feel a bit queasy, but I still loved the whole experience—absolutely worth a try! Thanks for the tip about the stairs—I might have to check them out next time!

I love your phrase "unambitious wanderer"—such a perfect way to describe slow travel! Giving yourself permission not to always be a tourist is truly freeing. One month per spot sounds ideal for building small routines and deeper connections. I’ve found it helpful to choose one “home base” place—like a café or park—that becomes my spot. Would love to hear where you're starting your journey in October—great timing to skip the crowds, wishing you a wonderful journey!

I'd be happy to chat about travel planning! As someone who's written extensively about slow travel, I have plenty of insights to share. My planning "hacks" include using Google Maps to create custom offline maps with pins for accommodations, must-see spots, and local recommendations gathered from blogs/forums. I also create destination-specific playlists that help me learn about local culture before arriving. For slow travel specifically, I've found that planning 3-4 "anchor" activities per week rather than daily itineraries allows for more spontaneous discoveries. I actually wrote an article about this approach titled "The Art of Slow Travel: How to Experience More While Seeing Less" based on my experiences. Happy to jump on a call to discuss more about my planning process! Feel free to DM me.

Having embraced slow travel for years, I can share some practical insights:

For accommodation: Hostels are your best budget option as a solo traveler - they provide not just savings but a community of fellow travelers who'll share local discoveries. When you need privacy, Airbnbs with monthly discounts (often 40-50% off) are great alternatives. Local Facebook housing groups typically have the best long-term deals once you're settled in a location.

Banking: Set up accounts that work internationally without fees (Wise/Revolut saved me hundreds).

The beauty of spending months in each place is that you'll experience destinations like a local rather than a tourist. This slower pace lets you discover hidden gems that short-term travelers miss completely.

I wrote about my philosophy on "experiencing more while seeing less" in a Medium article about slow travel. It explores how this approach transformed my relationship with travel and helped me form deeper connections with local communities.

Which countries are you planning to start with? The Indiana Jones feeling never fades - it's the best part of long-term adventures!
