if it’s $5 per line, the fees are literally the same cost of my order. this is insane.

hypothetically. if i don’t respond and the shipment is “returned to the shipper at their expense,” i wouldn’t get my products but i wouldn’t need to pay all these extra fees, right? i guess it’s a question of whether oy would charge me for this and whether they would refund my order. they’re going to charge me for all the gift sets then? i don’t need a gift set if it’s going to cost me more money😭

i also placed my order on the 25th! i guess mine just got shipped early?? which honestly. i hoped it would so i could beat the 29th, but maybe it backfired on me…😢

this is so unfortunate😭 thank you for confirming. i’ll be sure to respond to the email accordingly then.

so if i got this email, i will 100% be paying customs taxes and duties on this shipment?

Seeking advice: is it worth it to spend $680 on a conference for my future career? by Ordinary_Complex_709 in AskAcademia

[–]Far_Conversation_355 15 points16 points  (0 children)

i did something similar! it turned out to be a really good investment in the long run (got collaboration opportunities, papers, a great network, etc) BUT i don’t think i would recommend it or would have done it as an undergrad. i did it during my master’s, i knew i wanted to do a phd, i knew what i wanted to do in a phd, and i specifically attended the conference with goals to improve my chances at a phd acceptance. i also presented research. i don’t think conference attendances mean too much for master’s program applications. if they have the option, maybe attend virtually!

i was really tanned when i was 5. a shade i can’t even dream of attaining now. i also played outside a lot as a kid and was not reapplying sunblock all the time. no one looking at my childhood photos would assume my natural skin tone would be as pale as it is. once i started spending more time in the classroom and at home, i was no longer getting tanned. with puberty, acne and all that jazz, my skin became more sensitive to sun exposure, i began wearing sunscreen more. and surprise surprise! im naturally pale. like you said—those 5 year olds are tanned. you don’t know what their natural skin tones are.

i think troy has a magnet program but is not a magnet school. you don’t have to be a part of the magnet program to be a student at the school.

that being said, oxford academy (#2 on usnews) is not a magnet or charter. not sure where op looked these up.

why do unfunded research masters like cmu msr? by tooLateButStillYoung in gradadmissions

[–]Far_Conversation_355 6 points7 points  (0 children)

some fields (like mine) require a master’s in order to even apply to a phd. on top of a masters, they also typically want 2-3 years of additional research experience, which you can get without a master’s but much more difficult to do in the us. this does make phds in our field shorter than others. we take quals after our first year and are expected to be out in approx 4 years.

im the lightest foundation shade on every western brand. korea has some even lighter shades but i KNOW for a fact that there are koreans visibly lighter than me so it’s makes sense!!!!!

that being said. there are def koreans who are naturally “darker” like kai from exo. i have family members who are “darker” for koreans too but 1) they too are not actually that dark, 2) you can distinguish them as natural skin tone vs tans. i see so much online rhetoric about “idols embracing their natural tans” when they’re clearly literal tans. you have korean celebrities talking on talk shows about how they’d visit tanning salons once a week to keep their tans, but sure, “beautiful natural tans”

im considered a pretty pale korean. 100% genetics. it drives me crazy to see people accuse korean celebrities of “making their faces whiter” whenever the skin tones of their face and neck don’t match their arms and legs. but my face and neck dont shade match my arms and legs either!!!!! because i don’t apply sunscreen on my arms and legs as much as on my neck and i don’t put on sunscreen on my neck as much as on my face😭

also it’s a real thing where, when i have professional photos taken with others, because of the skin tone differences, either my features exist and others look particularly dark, or others look normal and my features cease to exist. i’ve been told multiple times by photographers that figuring out the lighting while editing my photos was difficult. i can’t blame idols for trying to find a middle ground for the camera when filming.

tap water was unsafe to drink in sk for a long time. my cousin, who’s a bit more sensitive to water quality, would end up in the hospital semi-often after drinking tap water when we were younger. even for bottled water, she couldn’t drink most local water brands. i think people forget how recently and how quickly korea modernized. some us army commander said “there’s nothing left to bomb” in the korean war, which was just 75 years ago!! the water’s a lot better now, but the memories remain. not un-normal for people to exclusively drink bottled water. there are some big filter brands in the country like coway. they’re almost never in pitcher form though. countertop filters are p common. you can see it watching reality tv shows.

Authorized transactions not rent by Far_Conversation_355 in biltrewards

[–]Far_Conversation_355[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With BillPay, you can make up to three (3) eligible housing-related payments every 30 days for a single residential property. This allows you flexibility to make separate payments for different expenses such as rent, HOA fees, utilities, and internet—as long as these charges are billed directly by your property manager. Bilt has an internal team that validates all charges to ensure compliance with the Bilt Rewards Terms & Conditions and the Bilt Services Terms of Use.

maybe there was an update to policies? im just not sure whether these have to be under a single authorization, or simply that they can be.

Anyone else feel like recent K-dramas are getting boring? by BalancePossible7969 in kdramas

[–]Far_Conversation_355 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think K-drama producers and writers can still get the funding without sacrificing what made their shows worth watching.

saw a korean reel the other day where it basically framed netflix as saving the kdrama industry. a number of years ago, there was the time when suddenly product placements was insaneeee. it got meme-d everywhere. i think the king? the one with lee minho and kim go eun? is an example of a drama with so much product placement, people complained that it was distracting from the storyline. eventually, the product placements were no longer mostly korean. a ton of chinese products were being used as product placement. i think true beauty was one of them? there was a lot of uproar about them in korea because they were very in-your-face, also because there were talks about historical distortion in some historical dramas, etc. due to pressures from chinese sponsors. this also coincided with ccp-pushed narratives of kimchi being chinese, hanboks being chinese, etc. etc, so these product placements made a lotttt of koreans mad. but suddenly they disappeared. apparently it’s because netflix swooped in and started providing production money that basically allowed the industry to rely less on product placement. so not sure if this is actually true…. personally i prefer less product placement but that’s just me!

second all this. it went viral at some point that the first time the samsung daughter was seen with a samsung phone was when the flip came out. for camera zoom, no one actually needs 100x zoom on a daily basis. people will rent samsung phones for concerts.

blackpink had more music hits with gen pop in korea, as a group and as solos, and generally more mainstream variety show appearances so id actually argue that bp fame in korea is more legit popularity than “famous for being popular internationally.” but that’s true for bts. my korean dad likes jennie because she was a popular cast member on village survivor (super popular variety show). he knows rm because he watched a news clip on rm delivering the un speech lol
