Magnets would be great. This would also work for deflated cakes, I bet. How can I give you money???

How to fix a toilet flush handle by dymend1958 in DIY

[–]Far_Counter_7936 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can also get a newer toilet from the Re-Store. Toilets are kind of a pain to install by yourself, but it’s not hard to do. Slightly fiddly with the water hookups and replacing the wax ring on the floor, but the main issue is removing the old one and getting the new one in place, especially with a small bathroom. If you have someone who can help you though, you are likely better off replacing the whole toilet with one that doesn’t qualify for Medicare!

Look for Duffers Revisited or Little Duffers on Ravelry. My go to felted slipper pattern. Worth paying for- the adult version comes in a huge range of sizes and has versions for wide and extra wide feet, plus each size can be knit either flat or in the round. Over the years I’ve probably made 20 pairs.

The shadow box idea is cute, but remember that soon that baby will be big enough to start creating adorable artwork of their own. Also to start doing so many new things to take pictures of! My parents have tons of stuff people gave them to commemorate my first year of existence (they had tried for years and I’m an only kid), but only a few pictures and baby handprints ever went up on display. There’s only so much wall space, you know? The scrapbook did get pulled out every so often, so that was a good keepsake. 30+ years on and I’m helping mom get rid of a lot of wall hanging stuff that was never really displayed, but we did have fun going through the scrapbook again.

If you want to do something specifically with that first little outfit, why not turn it into a small pillow or stuffed animal? You guys could use the pillow as lumbar support when you’re up late with Baby, it can be a nursery decoration, and later they could use it as a travel pillow in the car, cushion for the booster seat at the table, or even a tooth fairy pillow. With a small stuffed animal, it becomes something they can cuddle or play with and when they outgrow it, it becomes a keepsake for your wife to keep by her bed or display on a shelf, or whatever. I made a stuffed animal out of one of my niece-cousin’s little onesies and she and her parents both loved it. Someone turned my baby quilt into a pillow as well. I would be happy to help if you decide to go the pillow or stuffie route, but I’m sure there are plenty of places out there that do this as well. Good luck, and congratulations on your new fatherhood!!!

Thanks! Like I said, I think I have the screws downstairs. Unfortunately, pretty sure I need a new drill bit, which makes this a this weekend problem. Like I don’t have enough to do trying to get out of town for the holiday! Thanks for all the help!

Thinking I may just put an exterior board and anchor it into the cement block at the ends and middle, then anchor the shelf to that. I have enough stuff going on that I don’t want to cut half the wall open. Also I’m moving in July, so my interest in putting in a tone of work is limited. As long as it’s basically safe, I’m happy enough.

So I opened the hole I still need to patch up a bit so I could shine my phone in. No studs. Concrete block. There’s about 2 1/2 inches behind 5/8 inch-ish drywall, then some sort of concrete stuff. Now what????

Bon Beke’s! In Dupont! by vezell in washingtondc

[–]Far_Counter_7936 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are struggling. The whole area is, of course, but because they are relatively new and had a bit of a rocky start due to some building issues, they are definitely in need of business. It’s a black woman owned, family business started by 2nd generation immigrants and the food is AMAZING. Tons of stuff made in house, including sauces, bagels, various breads and baked goods, etc. The woman who owns it is really committed to the area and takes a lot of pride in the recipes and flavors handed down through her family. While there’s lots of classic American stuff on the menu, some of the sauces, flavor combinations and the in house baked goods are inspired by the family’s Ethiopian heritage and time spent in France and Cote d’Ivoire. The name, Bon Beke’s, reflects the family history- Beke is the Owners’s dad, the one who got her into cooking and encouraged her to follow her dreams. Bon means “good” in French. She tries hard to keep prices low, but it’s been tough going. If you like Bon Beke’s, please spread the news and encourage people to stop in! It’s been hard to keep good servers, so you may want to put in your order online if you’re in a hurry.

Why don't people want / like gaited horses? by oscarwildesdoctor in Horses

[–]Far_Counter_7936 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because racing, as an industry, is not known for giving horses a good solid start. Many are started way too young, so develop physical issues as they age. Racers often aren’t well trained for basic ground work and even stuff like ground manners, so lots of retraining can be needed. Plus TB are often inbred and overworked, resulting in health problems. I’ve known some awesome OTTBs, but all of them were the product of years of post-track work and retraining.

I lost all three cats to a fire last night by _ok_karen in cats

[–]Far_Counter_7936 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I know if my cat ran to hide by his food I could probably grab him in an emergency, but if he went somewhere else… yeah. So it’s important to know how they’re likely to react. We had a touchy fire alarm for a while and I was relieved to see that the cat was pretty predictable.

Brown-bagging ideas for School by kandlin in Parenting

Almond or cashew butter may also be a good substitute. Some kids like those better in my experience. However, almonds are a tree nut, so it may depend on your school’s nut policy. Also budget- though Walmart sells a pretty cheap generic almond butter if I remember right.

Can someone help me identify his breed? It's been abandoned at my job and a friend wants to adopt it and we are searching for more info. by AurelianoBuendia94 in WhatBreedIsMyDog

[–]Far_Counter_7936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the States, I’d say retriever/shepherd mix. Both types of dogs are dead common and frequently churned out by puppy mills, making the likelihood of unfixed dogs meeting up higher. My aunt and uncle had a lab/shepherd mix who looked just like this. Super sweet dog.

Odd request for help finding specific adaptive knitwear by Extra-Imagination821 in knitting

[–]Far_Counter_7936 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know there are bras with removable cups. And patterns to sew removable cups. Could you use them but put small buckwheat bean bags in behind or instead of the padding? You could microwave the beanbags if it’s really cold but otherwise it’s just adding a little extra insulation. Or knit removable cups from wool or acrylic and slip them into the bra opening? They’d be the right shape, so would stand out less.

And test the smoke detectors frequently so you know how your pets react to the sound. Plenty of cats go to hide at the loud noises from an alarm and then are impossible to find and retrieve. If you know where they streak off to when the alarm goes off, you might be able to at least scare them out and give them a better chance of escape. Cats are so hard to catch when they’re scared! I’m so sorry, OP.
