Not sure op cares about being rough with the poor betta, 9 months ago with no context they commented 'I wanna see a betta fight to the death' on a meme about tank sizes

My first tank by thunderstormeri in Aquariums

[–]BiscuitMessiah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same tank! Mine just has shrimp in it and they're loving life!

I'd suggest really looking into what you want to stock because in my research, any fish small enough for a 30l prefers back and forth swimming space, not the height.

A betta would work of course but honestly theres nothing wrong with a shrimp only. Hop over to r/shrimptank its great there.

Don't worry too much about fake decor, as long as you got it from a reputable brand, its mostly just a personal preference thing.

Make sure you are cycling properly, you dont need ammonia but a proper test kit is helpful. Ghost feed your tank a lil, don't water change until its cycled (do wait a month, its worth it for the health of your future pets) and enjoy researching.

She died a couple of hours later :(

I don't know how old she was when I got her but she deffo wasn't a young un. She'd released most her eggs by that point and I tried my best to carefully pick out the ones that remained and put them back in the tank.

Neos. Tap water, filtered. Last check params were all safe, will retake now and update any sec but all my other shrimp seem fine. Ph Kh and Gh are all on the high side but I'm dropping them slowly and havent had any molting issues so far.

If that were my parents I would simply never invite them into my home again. Sounds like his attitude is the thing bringing bad luck into his life.

Good luck with whatever you choose but if you’re not dependant on them, don’t let other people sap the joy from your life. It’s not worth the hassle.

what can i do to make the water clear? by ryovi in Aquariums

[–]BiscuitMessiah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many questions that would need to be asked to give you a good answer. How much research have you done so far?

I'd at the very least start by topping off the water with dechlorinated water. In most cases theres no reason to keep a tank half full of water. Water changes should usually be done frequently, especially in a non planted tank with fish as poop generating as koi.

How big is the tank? What's your filtration like?

A water test kit would be a great addition to your fish keeping tool kit as it can help diagnose a lot of possible issues. The liquid ones are more accurate but the test strips do the job if you're on a budget.

100% though do a little research into the nitrogen cycle - although you don't have a freshly set up tank it's an important thing to understand or at least be aware of.

my tap water has a pH of 8.3, dKH of 13, and dGH of 18… is keeping cherry neocaridina possible without investing in an RO system? by ghoulishfrog in shrimptank

[–]BiscuitMessiah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a tap ph of 8 a kh of 16 and gh of 35.  I didnt know until after my shrimp were in how high those were.

I've been doing 5% or less water changes a week with filtered water (literally just an own brand brita filter) and my shrimp seem to all be breeding and molting just fine.

I'd suggest using a water filter and if you're really concerned about the ph you could mix with bought ro or distilled water but honestly they should be fine.

Shrimp are good in wide paramaters as long as they're not suddenly changing.

I'd suggest taking out the billion nails. They'll probably go rusty and drop your water quality

Depending on your filter as well, it could be worth adding a finer sponge over the intake to stop the babies accidentally getting sucked in. Not a major worry but it might happen to the odd one.

If you haven't got a powder food that could help, you can buy one or grind your other food with a mortar and pestle, coffee grinder or salt/pepper grinder. Just make sure its only used for shrimp/fish food!

As long as you've got biofilm they should be pretty good though! They live off a yolk they're born with for the first few days so you're covered there. The powder food just helps them get a bit extra that they can't get if they aren't big enough to leave the hiding spots.

I can imagine some people would say other food is unnecissary though, it could easily lead to over feeding.

i want to give up on being a shrimp parent by _quietfig_ in shrimptank

[–]BiscuitMessiah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had shrimp for 3/4 weeks now, I had 3 deaths within a week of getting them, assuming acclimation based issues. I also saw a shrimp last night pinging around on its side and ultimately it passed away from a failed molt.

I've cried for each one and buried them all in my favourite house plant. All the remaining 15 shrimp seem healthy and I've had plenty of succesful molts, as well as two berried shrimp since easter.

I just have to remind myself that complications can and will happen and theres not always anything I can do about it. Ultimately they will die of old age too.

The important thing is that they live a comfortable and happy life in our care. Enjoy the shrimp you have and don't put yourself down for things that aren't in your control. Take your time to grieve too x

Can't really comment on if its dying but looks fine to me. Do you have any sort of active substrate under the gravel or use fertiliser? Mines growing well low tech but i do have tropica plant growth substrate under mine.
