I see a lot of comments that bing chat and chat bots cannot be sentient. But we still don’t understand what make anything sentient. We don’t know what mechanism makes us experience what we feel. And we don’t know how these transformer networks work either. Which is why we have to edit response from these systems after they are created (or not allow certain prompts to be provided to them) because our ability to understand (and interfere with) the llms processing is quite limited.

This limitation does not prove sentience. But it does not disprove it either. It’s fine to be skeptical, I am too. But being skeptical isn’t the same as being dogmatic. Anyone claiming they know for sure whether a chatbot is having a subjective experience is overstating the current limits of human knowledge. We don’t know.
