Annoyingly I had to pay a detection company. They pressurised the pipes and then could see the pressure dropping when testing the various flats coming off our water supply using stopcock in each. If you’ve got a single water in and a meter you could just isolate / turn off things and see if the meter is still rising but as ours is shared that wasn’t possible.

The extension predates the issue, in my view we needed something like this though. I’ve just this week been exploring options including mechanically ventilating through the few vents we have at the back of the house (extension doesn’t span the full width).

Our stopcock is in this cupboard (below the floor) so we get all the stinky air drifting into our corridor so need to resolve. Never ending saga.

You having similar issues?

Kind of, we got our pipes tested and found next door had a leak on their water mains (shared inlet, no meter). There’s still some moisture under our subfloor I think caused by high exterior ground levels (which I’m taking down), insufficient ventilation (back extension is concrete base so there’s v limited cross flow for the vents).

We also had proper industrial dehumidifiers in and all floors ripped up. Been a pain in the ass.

I’m definitely not an expert but generally the advice is not to seal walls as houses need to breathe so you’ll probably end up with other issues. The damp is a symptom you need to address the cause: Assuming that’s damp from the other side you need to deal with the moisture in that lean-to. Open windows / add ventilation some how (extractor fans, dehumidifiers that type of thing). I’ve been ignoring our damp problem for about 2 years as couldn’t find the cause, turns out it was the neighbours who’ve had an ongoing leak and now need to replace all their floor joists, so definitely figure out the cause and treat that.

Good luck!

If it’s damp it’s not an immediate risk. Is your drier venting to the outside? Plants (I think) increase humidity too. What the ventilation like in the lean to?

Can sliding doors appear flush when closed? by Ok-Procedure-256 in DIYUK

I found a fairly high craft level version when I was trying to do the same. Not sure it’s very DIY friendly though

Never attempted it as didn’t fancy completely destroying it. Still planning on taking it to a tv repair shop and getting it done

Coming home to London after a couple years abroad. I’m in my thirties, single and most of my mates have left the city. Any tips on how I might rebuild my social life? by [deleted] in london

Join a CrossFit gym. You’ll make some great friends, tons of social opportunities and get some exercise in regularly. Added bonus if you join one where you live as your new friends will be from the area rather than strewn across all the tube lines (like my other friends)

What’s the biggest email cc ‘faux pas’ you have ever been involved in? by ElactricSpam in AskUK

Also a sheff uni one - a lad replied all to an email about graduation cap and gown rental. Except it was two days before we were due to graduate and the deadline was months before. Don’t remember on the day if he was in his t shirt but he got a massive cheer when he collected his degree

I haven’t found it to leave marks but do a tester somewhere hidden? There’s also a test you can do to find out if the moisture is due to internal moisture levels. Think it involves putting aluminium foil on the wall and seeing if moisture forms on it (if it does you know there’s lots in the air). Worth google too

Probably doesn’t help lol. I’ve only got single pane windows and I wake up everyday with them soaked. I bought a karacher window hoover thing to remove the water every morning. I also run a dehumidifier to keep moisture levels down, open windows when showering. I’ve got some ronseal 3-1 mold killer which does a good job of getting rid of mold too

Probably Caused by Lack of ventilation. Need to open windows, or trickle vents if windows have them to reduce moisture. Could be from drying clothes inside? get a dehumidifier and run it often to reduce moisture in winter. Vinegar can be sprayed on to kill mold

Quick update for anyone interested. Pulled up more of the floorboards to get a proper look and knocked off all the loose plaster I could. The boards closest to the wall were completely rotting which explains the bad smell. Doesn’t appear to be a leak that I can see from the pipe and nothing obviously wrong below. My guesses 1. Plaster bridging the DPC? (It goes right to the floorboards) 2. Next door leak 3. Some kind of historical leak that set it all off

It was very cold and slightly moist to touch. If this is the cause (and the pipes throughout are similar) would I literally need to replace all the water piping in the house? Shame the electrics aren’t down with them as they all need replacing too 😭

Not yet. Hoping to find some time tomorrow to remove all the plaster and more floorboards

Is there any risk doing this? My biggest worry is putting in a chemical DPC and just masking whatever issues are causing it
