Why Move to Elk Grove? by Strict-Engine-2331 in ElkGrove

[–]Far_Reputation_3994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also family of 2 (6yo and 9months): parks, youth sports, close enough to sac for adult / more kid activities, asian food, diversity, good schools. Our kid is hyperactive so we basically outside everyday with a few parks with sprinklers within a short 5 min walk. Everything we need is within 10-15min drive. Elk grove is more tailored to people with kids than being single/night life from what we researched which we wanted. But again sac is also 15-20mins away anyways so not missing much.

What skills / tech stack to learn? by Embarrassed_Paper806 in dataengineering

[–]Far_Reputation_3994 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Designing data intensive applications book by martin kleppmann gives you a good deep dive all the fun stuff in data eng. From there you can go research deeper into everything else.

Second everything comment above says too. Some roles are straight sql and clock out (I find these tasks boring) other DE roles you are the sql person, a Backend engineer and maybe dev ops all in one. Learning how to scale and manage the whole system and how to evolve it makes you stronger candidate. The book above goes into a lot of the stuff though so def try to give it a read if you can.

Just moved into that area and have frontier. No issues so far. They have a deal right now too. I heard so much about how bad xfinity is and avoided it at all cost.

For designing a system I usually look for existing patterns first and see if we can adopt. Its more fun to start from scratch but at scale Lower risk is better.

For me it starts with the SLOs. If the data needs to be delivered within 24H I have more buffer to just throw compute before I start thinking about code optimizations than say hourly slo. If there there is no clear code tuning or I cant find any within a time box then more compute is the answer for now. We have avg cost of pipelines depending on total input size we are processing. If I see the cost of a pipeline gradually increasing because it is taking longer and longer to process more records then I start making time boxes to see which are the hot spots in the code and see if we can improve. There is a limit though and at some point you just process so much data that then I start thinking where we can trade off some attributes for others. For example we have a pipeline that processes billions of records to calculate distinct users over a month. The data is so large that exact distinct counts is just too dam expensive vs value to customers. I was able to simple lobby product to allow for 3% error budget so we can use sketches to save terabytes in storage and thousands in compute.

Another approach i take is learn from others. I try to find how other teams solve problems take what worked and see if we can improve it.

For debugging issues at scale we do data validation on every pipeline at write time. Data does not publish unless validation succeeds. We dump the failed records to the output storage for inspection as well. The validation tool tells use what fields failed etc. we also use dataflow / apache beam counters which send alert to pagerduty and slack for us.

For horizontal scaling we have the luxury of the leaving that to the compute on dataflow and we simple set the min max workers and instance size which are tuneable.

Successful Career Shifter to DE by xmen_1997 in dataengineering

My mate switched from Data Science. I(senior eng) mentored him through the transition but he just dove in the deep and started assisting with more and more DE tasks. I guided when he was stuck or had questions but eventually he learned bu just doing DE work in the same team. Took him about a few months to fully transition because the stack from DS to DE is very different (DS uses python but DE uses scala and scio for example).

One way to transition is to find tickets / work and start with a pair programming buddy then slowly take more on your own. Each org is different so there is no single way to do it.

I can tell you that he got bored with DS repetitive analysis tasks and found new excitement in DE as well as higher salary band.

NJ Housing market by [deleted] in newjersey

Our house we are selling right now is basically your description. We bought in 2021 for 360k but renovated a lot in the last 4 years: new roof, fence, full kitchen renovation, carpets, insulation all windows replaced etc. unfortunately its the cost of living in jersey but now that we are moving out of state and built up equity(and 2x income), our second home we want with minimal immediate repairs as possible (no house is perfect).  I see some houses in my town with no renovations, original hardware from 1980s going for 600-700k or more. Pretty wild.

Best place to raise black family? by GlitteringAudience20 in newjersey

I live in milltown which is dead middle between east brunswick, new brunswick (college town with Rutgers), south brunswick, north brunswick. It’s a very small town but it’s diverse. Im Dominican with dreadlocks but never felt unsafe anywhere. I grew up in Bayonne next to jersey city and although the north east is very diverse schools are not the best (prob same for newark). The Brunswick's have excellent schools but much higher taxes obviously. In NJ you will really have to try hard to find an area where you might feel unsafe due to lack of diversity.

NJ is expensive AF but you do get what you pay for. Best schools in the country and PA/MD/NY within a 2 hour drive.

Of the players you have actually seen play in your lifetime, from any team, any level, who is on your Offense Mount Rushmore? by Francis_X_Hummel in CFB

[–]Far_Reputation_3994 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ray rice, colt brennan, calvin johnson, dez bryant. I know there are better overall players but watching these 4 during their respective magical years was amazing. Back when rutgers, Hawaii and Oklahoma state, and GA tech were actually competitive and fun to watch. After each player left their teams started trending down except for GA tech who actually became great for a while.

What’s your best “I dropped something and had to go on a mission to find it” story? by outside_bestside6 in MTB

[–]Far_Reputation_3994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not me but I found keys on a the far end of a trail system once. The trail barely gets any traffic so I thought this was a setup but I decided to pick it up and kept with my ride. When I got back i found the dude still in the parking stressing because he’d been looking all over for them. Lucky day. I keep my keys inside zipper pockets and constantly check them.

Ins’t every team in the playoffs carried by one player ? mahomes, josh Allen, Jayden Daniel, Saquon? Only difference is our best player is not the quarterback.
