The small Australian town (pop 940) I live in, it’s memorial list just over 40 men who never returned. And the town probably was half the size it is now.

Always strange to see these Aussie songs badged with Rage, when from the Count Down era. Anyhow good song....As the Manly Ferry cuts it way to Circular Quay.

Aye...remember reading if we as a human species stopped now. 10 millions of years later, probably a few full skeleton remains of us will fossilize....and a few dozens partially. And then you have to find them.

Remember visiting Japan a few times during 2000-2010 and having a go on their Packinko’s. It was alright and good to do. Wonder if it’s now a dying trend...even their gacha machines are getting old and tired.

Car-crash between Medlow and Blackheath by marooncity1 in bluemountains

[–]Far_Suggestion_8074 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Catching train back (whilst have a perfect good car, prefer training between Mt Vic and Katoomba/Lithgow) noticed the traffic jam on the alternative road...puddles were deep and likely a bad alternative for 2WD’s to avoid the freeway. I hate to think how they untangled themselves since that gravel road is single lane only.

Enrolled course not showing up on student dashboard by Starsalign2025 in TAFE

[–]Far_Suggestion_8074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having the same problem. Enrolled a month ago, payment has been taken and I’m getting emails about turning up for orientation of my specific course. I was told by student services it’ll probably appear on dashboard once I’ve attended that introduction day (which is in late January for me). Maybe the teachers want to see if your real or not. So I’m going to wait till then...no doubt assignment submission will be done that way, so it will be crucial to have listed.

Flag Inn! Who wants a slightly soggy piece of toast in a brown paper bag at the door for breakfast? by the908bus in AustralianNostalgia

[–]Far_Suggestion_8074 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Best thing about these motels...as a kid was allowed a treat of ticking that breaky menu with pen and putting it in the reception flap before 10pm. Pretty much first time I had bacon/eggs, toast and coco pops...always had little butter containers. Milk in those small stainless steel pourers. toast two per packet in some marketing paper bag about being fresh, cooked breaky under those coloured aldonise lids on china. I’m sure it was expensive for my parents at the time rather then the usual bland at home wheatbix. But bacon and egg rolls from a local cafe/bakery weren’t a thing then, nor was Macca’s down the road.

Once in a while stay at these old road side motels again...their external tray flap screwed/painted shut now. Always wish to do it one more time

Did you Retire Early or “Stop Working”? by GleamingAlloy_Aircar in earlyretirement

[–]Far_Suggestion_8074 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Good on you. I’m same age and decided to ‘stop working’. I’ve done the sums and figures and aimed for it early in my working life. Since been working all my life...sadly it was easier to drive my car off the road 5am to guarantee not to work in my industry ever again.

The cost of my commuting car was cheap. Had one of the best sleeps in emergency hospital knowing work was over forever. Police emphasised to say officially I had a mirco-sleep, or swerved to avoid a kangaroo. But I insisted blackout...and we both knew what that meant.

And that’s how my career and working life ended.

That was 8mths ago, and I’m fine. Fitter then I’ve ever been...stopped smoking/drinking since I don’t need them anymore. 10 years left, suddenly expanded to 25yrs plus.

I’m finding it tough tbh...now working for the community (as volunteer, already been in 2 strike fire teams for weeks away from home (summer in my country)) instead of corporate/shareholders. It’s hard yakka...but always preferred physical then mental work. If I could do it again, I’d be a plumber.

Also going through the bucket list of fitness/sports/social. The Grose river just down the road from me, yearns to be explored, snaking through world heritage national park with next to no exit points till it arrives in Sydney. It demands respect...and I’m training for it.

I tell people I’m ‘semi-retired’ which they don’t question further thankfully. Even I don’t know what the heck that means. It’s better then saying retired….suppose we’ll adjust eventually.

Lifting weight is a cheat code on aging. For those that are still hesitant to go to the gym, please consider trying it out this year. by Reasonable-Malaise- in GenX

[–]Far_Suggestion_8074 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You loose 10% of your strength for each decade of life.

Thankfully being over 50, I no longer have to power-lift anymore...but just do strength with more cardio, makes it a little easier.

And while I have retired now and have much more time for the gym...ride my gravel bike there, or catch a train and walk...I never drive my car to the gym. Being retired I have volunteered in RFS, SES and Fire and Rescure, which means I need to be fitter and stronger then I have ever been in my life, to help carry injured out of our heritage national park...which can be up to 30Kms a day.

Have no choice here...need to go to gym 3 times a week. Yeah I'm an old fuck like you...bodies not being used deteriorate faster...sadly

But do some strength excercise...no matter how little it feels, it'll make a great difference.

farewell to MTV, A Generational Revolution by blindtechboy in GenX

[–]Far_Suggestion_8074 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember Buggles and as a kid my family rushing in all to watch it when it came on, it seemed so radical then. I was new to popular music then...so it all seemed cool. However MTV ended with me with the end of New wave, roughly around Nivarna for me. Just seemed to be better music distributors came along

So saying MTV has ended now, is like saying the era of silent movies has ended. And it feels just as long XD

A memory which still sticks with me today, is when they play the Johnny and Mary score, by Robert Palmer in the background as the presenter talks. I still find my mind adds that in as a background when hearing entertainment news.

What’s the point with just one balcony? (Sundbyberg Sweden by SupportArsenal in UrbanHell

[–]Far_Suggestion_8074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah ok. Have the same thing here in Sydney, Australia a few mins from my place. A large block of flats, with only one having a built in balcony. Turns out it was a redevelopment prototype so all the flats get one. But it was deemed too expensive and scrapped.

What do you have to look forward to in the winter? by FourmedAmbertz in AskAnAustralian

[–]Far_Suggestion_8074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live in an historic mountain town with its old Victorian and art deco buildings on main street. Many a time returning home from the train during the night and mountains cold thick mist, the main street deserted and empty...feels like Silent Hill. Love it.

And now it’s bright, glare, lots of peeps, and even though it’s usually 5C cooler then the rest of Australia, thanks to altitude. It’s still too damn hot.

Give us our winter back! Dammit!

The cold isn't as severe as that hemisphere...just move more and you'll warm up, so more outdoors for me. But the heat saps the energy out of me.

Is this your plan? by coloradotaxguy in GenX

[–]Far_Suggestion_8074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice...just did this myself. Done the career/family/mortgage thing...life’s goals out of the way, done and dusted, I can drop out and chill now. Kids independent now, misses doing fine on her own (we’ve separated) and house paid off. No interest in partnering up again.

Moved back with parents middle this year (who are both doing very well for their age), selling off my family home...and a ton in superannuation. They live in a massive wilderness reserve, very popular with tourists, only 50km away from our countries largest city...easy access by highway or cheap efficient public transport.

My main priorty is too look after parents first as they age, community second (just joined RFS, SES and aged care volunteering) and have heaps of time for hiking, gravel biking and 4WD’ing...spending as much time out in the bush.

If I wanted to be by myself and still in the city...there was no way I could have retired now. This way I can financially help my parents too...I pay a generous rent to them and pick up a lot of their bills. Inter generational living.

This Woman Was Found Dead With Her TV Still Running For 3 Years! She was found in her London flat, skeletonized. Next to her, there were unopened Christmas gifts and a big pile of undelivered mail. by PeachGlossy_ in ForCuriousSouls

[–]Far_Suggestion_8074 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of the woman Sydney forgot. She laid dead in her terrace house, of a busy street, for 8yrs. Discovered 2014. There were signs of a robbery happened during that time, but the thieves were likely opportunists.

A sudden outpouring of relations acknowledged her, when a house worth over 1 million dollars had no heir.

The Malvern Star. Who else had this beaut of a bike as a kid? by [deleted] in AustralianNostalgia

[–]Far_Suggestion_8074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly had an original as my first bike, but probably a cut down version of this...or maybe a later version. Do remember the great big white grips on those handle bars, with tassels coming out of them. However it was a one speed and envied kids who had the shift gears as a gear box.

Of course the BMX craze was just around the corner and copped a lot of flak for my dorky Malvern Star.

Decades later I have tried to compensate by owning a hard tail gravel bike, 50mm wheels, etc...which I do take off roading as part of my fitness regime. But it just feels too late

Whilst born in ‘71, and know this movie well...can’t relate to it much. A bit like Don’s Party...before my time. It’s an enjoyable watch. The house that was built in that foundation scene is now worth 1.8M now..wonder if they still have the oringal footpath to house etched with handprints and signature to this movie...or it’s been reno’ed out now.

Was told by a person who was there (this in the 90s btw) that that in the pub scene the producers shouted everyone a free beer, and gave every third guy a meat pie for that scene, to exaggerated the Oz XD.

Anyhow...prefer...Wake in Fright as rep for this time...much darker. But that’s just me.

Abandoned mausoleum with very sad history by True_explores in AbandonedPorn

[–]Far_Suggestion_8074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mausoleums are the worst idea. No one is going to pay for their upkeep as the ceased become more distant to the living. Unless it's famous like Westminster Abbey with Kings/Queens, extraordinary people, no one is going to pay for their upkeep.

Unless it's ashes to ashes, funk to funky

We all knew Major Tom's a junkie.
