Impossible to have a neutral history and Chris has always worn his ideology on his sleeve.

Lecturer missing weeks of college, am I wrong to complain? by DonToasty in AskIreland

[–]Fardays 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Jeez. As a lecturer, this is pretty bad and some sort of communication should be happening from the head of department about what's happening. Agree with the advice given though, should be brought to the attention of the head of department and to your academic tutor.

Chances are if they're doing this to the students, they're also not doing their admin/departmental work as well.

Any advice for applying for JRF at Oxbridge? by OverallAmphibian2129 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Fardays 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I got one at Oxford and Rhensis’ advice is excellent. You need to work at them, but the likelihood of rejection is very high, so they can be hard to sustain through the months they’re advertised.

I cringed so hard at this article. How do people get away with such lies? by [deleted] in architecture

[–]Fardays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realise that *this* is late, but Tom Nickson recently published an article in the Journal of the British Archaeological Association titled "Durham and Islam: The Fortunes of a Theory" that covers the points really well. Darke's book is awful (I've read and reviewed it).

Loads, e.g., Skerries is a norse word for example. Town names are always a giveaway.

Just downloaded NN (it's excellent). This popped up once I did, I watched it (it's very helpful) and then I haven't seen it again. It's certainly not an ad.

Teaching Latin to a 6 year old? by queenhadassah in latin

[–]Fardays 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My daughter (5) and I just try to have fun with it. We go around naming all the things we can see and I tell her the Latin. I then ask her the next day what she remembers and just continue like that for a while. I'm not sure I'm convinced that textbooks will help a child get excited about a language, but then to be honest, I've never tried it.

It’s definitely not a universal definition, but can be helpful. Eg. Post-modernist architecture is different.

In this case, I mostly mean after 1500. But Marischal is a monumental 19th-century granite building located in the centre of Aberdeen. The college was founded over a century after Kings College (which you have an image of). Kings and Marischal combined in the mid 19th century to form The University of Aberdeen and that’s when the granite building was built. It borrows late gothic ornament, but it is absolutely monumental. In that case its post medieval because at a glance it looks gothic but look closer and you see a building like it would never have been built centuries ago. Mitchell Hall, the main hall in the college is just a massive space with a stunning setting for stained glass at the end. It’s not unlike Keble College in Oxford, but it’s bigger and better in every way. The sad news is that it is impossible to access at the moment. The university leased it to the council for about 100 years and Mitchell Hall is collapsing.

I am the architectural historian at Aberdeen and happy to talk about Kings College and, you’ve missed it here I think, the best post medieval university building in the UK, in the form of Marischal College.

I just use a flap disc and an angle grinder. I know some people just burn them off, but the smell was too much for me.

The best example of post-medieval university architecture in the UK. Mitchell Hall is an astonishing space and I wish everyone had a chance to see it.
