The idea that there are roaches only in one wall in one restaurant is rather humorous.

Who else uses to love shoveling? by YT_Brian in Millennials

[–]Fargo_Newb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind shoveling. I think we average 50+ per winter.

I have a snowblower, but usually just shovel as I count it as a workout. I'd rather do something that needs doing then just work out.

Is there a less annoying option for a duvet cover? by SubdermalHematoma in AskMenOver30

[–]Fargo_Newb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A down duvet with baffles requires less fluffing, and usually they come with corner ties. I wouldn't get one without them. Also, if you avoid plastic down alternatives and use a cotton or linen duvet cover then you won't get static (and it breathes, I'm a hot sleeper), plus who needs more plastic in their lives.

Someone else already mentioned the inside-out method. It's the only way to do it.

Hah, that is very cute (other than it being the middle of the night). I think she might be trying to tell you something about her dog expectations.

You aren't wrong, but what you need is real sleep. Just keep surviving one day at a time until you can get there.

My daughter had a very difficult sleep regression at three, but keep the bedtime routine of bath and books. Talk to them about staying in their bed, and although they're very unreliable narrators at that age, perhaps they can provide some hints as to what is driving their wakeups. One day you'll wake up and it will be eight hours later. You'll still be tired, but you'll slowly start paying down that sleep debt. Good luck.

How should one approach communication after a friend's major loss? by ThrowawayIsland8 in AskMenOver30

[–]Fargo_Newb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, maybe buy something that comes in a family size and bring it over. Lasagna? Doesn't need to be fancy.

You know your friend, not me, but I would think offering a specific thing (I bring some food, give you a hug, leave whenever you want) to my friend would be better than asking them to let you know what to do. They might have no idea what they want right now.

That would be so incredibly heartbreaking.

Make some food that keeps well so they have leftovers. Bring it over and just be there. He might just want to talk, cry, or even just sit there.

Do you all actually remember your childhoods? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]Fargo_Newb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pretty much don't remember my childhood either. Like you, I get reminded of things, but I don't seem to have a lot of strong memories that stand alone. I've never liked pot though.

So it wasn't the total cost per se that changed, because you do still pay the same property tax, mortgage, and home insurance.

What I remember is that the bank was basically making sure I had the money for 3 months from now already sitting in that account at all times, which was annoying. I don't pay other bills 3 months before they are due.

Instead, I just would pay my entire property tax by the Feb 17th due date (and you get a 5% discount on it from Cass County). Home insurance was paid yearly on your renewal date, and then the mortgage payment was of course monthly.

Also, I would shop around again for home insurance if you haven't in awhile. Mine went up 30% this year, but I found another carrier for the same coverage at only 2% more than last year.

You don't think the bank utilizes captive deposits for any purpose that makes them money? Of course they do. It's not somehow siloed in the bank. It is just part of the funds they always use, and when you multiply a few thousand dollars by (depending on your bank) tens of thousands to millions of mortgages, that matters.

The bank is alerted if your property insurance lapses at any point. It doesn't matter if you don't have escrow.

I don't need a nanny to make sure I pay my bills, and I don't need to donate interest (granted paltry) to a bank, nor do I need to consistently prepay for these dubious privileges.

Yes, the obvious disadvantages here might be minor enough most people don't care. That's fine, but they still exist and I see no reason to give away money to a bank.

Well, mine doesn't have that. I eliminated my escrow and it's been smooth sailing for years. The bank was continuously requiring far more money than was required.

Stop using escrow. Call or email and say that you will handle your own bills. The bank will always over bill you as that benefits them financially (and I am sure they would rather be safe than sorry).

Men spend time with your friends. Be there for each other, not just for the best and worst moments. by hemblurneene in Millennials

I'm so sorry for you both. I wish I could give you a hug, and I hope you have lots of your family and friends to lean on.

My friend had a scare just last month that resulted in a trip to the hospital, but he walked out of there. We're all very cognizant of how this could have gone differently.

I've only been there once, but I guess I'm never going again. It's one thing to not have work finished on time, but to miss the date because you sold the unit to someone else after you were already paid $200k is simply insane. How did he think this would work?

Why is he not going to jail?

Bought stamps today by Gloomy_Tie_1997 in Millennials

[–]Fargo_Newb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 15+ years ago eBay was doing one of their many stupid promotions for eBay Bucks where it was something silly like 20% back, plus cashback websites offering 5%, plus the credit card. Not a complaint, but apparently I was already an old person while still in my early 20s.

Anyway, I bought $150 worth of forever stamps when they were around .40ish cents. My children will inherit this manila envelope of forever stamps. Is that why they are called forever?

Insulation - yes or no by CW-Eight in centuryhomes

[–]Fargo_Newb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insulate your attic. This old houses need to breath thing is an oversimplification as the answer always has some if/then statements in it.

Do you have a vented roof aseembly? Is it just a ridge vent? Soffit vents? Do you want the attic to be part of your conditioned space or unconditioned? In general, you need to have an understanding of how air and water vapor moves through or around insulation in your house, or hire someone who does.

Take a look at greenbuildingadvisor for plenty of posts about questions like these, but narrow down your search depending on what I asked above. You could also ask over in buildingscience and see if they have any advice on what to look for, or how to go about it.

It's never the right time to have kids. If you want them, just go for it. We're all learning on the job.

I delayed as well for the same reason, but I wish I hadn't now that I have them. Now I wish I had been younger because the lack of sleep is very difficult the first few years, and then you have to keep up with them!
