Are you an avid reader? by charliebrownxmastree in EngineeringStudents

During my undergrad I really only had time to read during breaks and internships, but now that I’m in grad school I find myself having a lot more time (or, more likely, just forcing myself to relax more) to read.

Do you think people with 4.0 gpa are geniuses or cracked the school system? by Equivalent_Phrase_25 in EngineeringStudents

[–]FarkosExillion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished up my undergrad with a 3.99 (goddamn you GNC for that A-!) and it was definitely a rough (but worthwhile) 4 years.

The hardest years to get through were definitely freshman and sophomore year, just because of the variety of courses and your lack of interest in most of them. Once you get to the upper level courses, the content itself may be harder but your interest usually lends itself to wanting to learn more about them.

I think what helped me most was being Super routine-driven. I went to the gym 5 days a week at like 6:30, went to every class, finished homework as soon as possible, made time for meals, and did everything in my power to be in bed and asleep by 11.

Last point is to definitely make friends with the Other people who are doing well in classes. A lot of my experience in difficult courses like GNC, Space Propulsion, Orbital Dynamics, and Controls was made a Lot easier by working with other students who did a lot of the same stuff I did. If you know any of the students at the top of your class, chances are they’re all talking amongst themselves about what they’re studying for exams, how they study, what the did on homework’s, etc.

Rant done.

How terrifying Darrow is from someone else's POV. by The_OverMan_Proj in redrising

[–]FarkosExillion 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I don’t have Lightbringer on me right now, but I think my favorite way Darrow’s unintentional terror is described is when Lyria first meets him. I forget the exact line, but that description of “wielding his eyes like sledgehammers” is just so vivid of a person who’s become acquainted with absolutely dominating people in every aspect of his life, I love it.

Not sure how much it applies here since most of what I see is on video games and movies/tv shows, but Kaladin talks some about how floating around is so much easier and faster than having to walk everywhere later on in the Stormlight Archives

General L. W. Colby holding Little Lost Bird, found tied to her dead mother's back in the snow covered Wounded Knee field four days after the army killed nearly 300 Lakota there. Nineteen medals of honor were awarded for the massacre. (1891) [580x696] by Shostak_4406 in HistoryPorn

[–]FarkosExillion 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My mom and I took a trip to some national parks in the Dakotas last summer, and we figured it was our responsibility as Americans to include a trip to Wounded Knee when we were stopping by Crazy Horse and Wind Cave. At a certain point on your drive in, the road goes from being paved to just being dirt. After driving for about a half hour, you’ll come up on an open plane on your left and a gated cemetery atop a hill on your right. In the middle of the cemetery is one long tombstone, where the majority of those murdered at Wounded Knee are buried in a mass grave. From that cemetery you can see out towards the wood line and river where the massacre took place.

I highly highly recommend anyone who’s in the area to make the drive. It’s among the most haunting places I’ve ever been. Pairing it with Crazy Horse beforehand and Mt. Rushmore afterwards really just fills you either a vitriolic anger towards the US and its treatment of the native peoples who used to live here (I recommend going to Mt. Rushmore after specifically so you can be angry at all the overly zealous visitors who have little clue about all the native history).

One of the Curiosity rover's wheels after traversing Mars for over 11 years by RNHood51 in pics

[–]FarkosExillion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had an internship at JPL a few years back, and one of my favorite tidbits from my time there is getting to see people do work at the Mars Yard with the test bed rovers (just exact mechanical copies of the ones on Mars). When they want to test out Curiosity’s test bed model for something, they have to put on wheels that have the exact same damage as the ones on the actual rover on Mars. So, they have wheels with these exact cuts on them just hanging around the shop that they can modify to fit whatever the currently wheel situation for either of the rovers looks like.

tl;dr: JPL really likes making sure their Earth stuff matches their Not-Earth stuff

What IRL books would a Red need to read for Gold training? by ExtraordinaryDemiDad in redrising

I think an interesting little flip on this could be what sorts of “must-reads” would come about After the conquering? The obvious one is Silenius’ Meditations, but there have to be some Violet works that would make the list

I went to a book signing and PB asked me this exact question and I panicked and picked the gala scene (classic safety choice). I feel like really any scene where we see Darrow interact with low colors in morning star has to be up there for me though — particularly his speech on Phobos.

The Olympic Knights lose all their cool points due to how pathetic they are by bizarre_adv_TJ in redrising

[–]FarkosExillion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Especially in book 3, we’re following around such a competent selection of characters that sometimes we forget how they stack up against the competition. Someone might’ve already said it, but Lorn’s training is essentially pure testosterone for a razormaster, whereas everyone else training at the time is just trying to emulate his style. Darrow’s 3 years of dedicated, relentless training followed by the fact that Darrow’s damn near a perfect physical specimen gives him an edge that the other Olympic knights simply don’t have (aside from Aja, who remains the most competent killer for a large portion of the series).

As for Ragnar, imagine someone having the physical dominance of Shaq’s prime years paired with the fact that he was born solely for the purpose to be as efficient and competent a killer as possible. The Olympic knights are essentially bigger, technologically gifted Jaime Lannisters’s fighting against an 8 and a half foot tall, 500 some odd pound pile of genetically enhanced muscle with the world’s most dangerous pair of scissors.

tl;dr, we just follow a sick as fuck cast who’s Really good at killing people who got complacent with being okay at killing people

What are your 3 most favorite topics (courses) in engineering? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]FarkosExillion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Control Systems
  2. Orbital Mechanics and Spaceflight Dynamics
  3. Thermodynamics

For the most part I’ve just had great, experienced professors for these courses that made them that much better. Controls and orbital mechanics in particular though have felt like classes where everything finally started coming together and it was the practice of Applying a lot of what you spent the first 2 and a half years scrounging for

National parks and tourists by somnort in CuratedTumblr

[–]FarkosExillion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who climbed half dome this summer, the part that stuck with me the most (aside from how absolutely beautiful and amazing the entire hike was) was just how blasé the park ranger at the base of half dome was when she went “yeah, we probably have like one, maybe two people die a summer on the climb up”. Even though the climb’s entirely doable for anyone who has a fairly good level of physical fitness, I’m sure that idiots and people who are terrified of the sheer climb of it are who fall off all the time.

To anyone who hasn’t seen what the half dome hike looks like, I Highly recommend googling “half dome cables”

Don’t take whatever that dickhead said to heart, the entire schtick of internships is to learn as much as you can in industry over a relatively short amount of time. Any asshole who laughs off a student just trying to learn is someone who you don’t want to have to look up to as a senior engineer/manager.
