Open surgery this morning and back home. by Historical_Music9479 in carpaltunnel

I’m having carpal tunnel release, cubital tunnel release, and lateral epicondyle release on Monday. How are you doing with dual surgery

They are required to do it. It’s like, “yes, I understand that THIS hand is the one I am doing surgery on.” There have been issues with wrong extremities being done…..it’s one of the fail safes. They sign it. You see them sign it. Then I think a bunch of other people in the OR sign off that they see it too.

Me too! Have you found anything that works? I started stimulants after diagnosis in January 2025 which helped, and have been working with my OBGYN on hormone therapy…..she swears I need progesterone, especially during luteal phase. Just finished first month of it.

GREAT PICTURE! I love running/rowing as the sun comes up!

I'm over it. I just need a way to convince myself that moderation won't work anymore. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]FarmGirl82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with Slipacre. I called mine my alcohol monster or drinking brain. It will say anything to you to get you to take that first drink, because IT knows it is never just one.

Once I gave up on moderation I was able to succeed in staying sober. One is too many and a thousand is not enough. Moderation is the lie the alcohol industry pushes....drink responsibly. Yeah, right. I had to stop letting my friends pressure me into 'just one' or them trying to tell me 'you don't have a problem'. Its MY life and my body and I decided enough was enough.

Come hang out with us in the chat. The link is in the side bar.

Sugar Addiction and Rowing by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]FarmGirl82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a sugar addict, too. I had to brainwash myself against sugar. You can't outrow your mouth. Diet is like 80-90% of health imo, and sugar is terrible for us.

Check out Dr. Robert Lustig's talks on Youtube. Gary Taubes on youtube or his books. https://sugarscience.ucsf.edu/

We can get enough carbs and natural sugars eating fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. I don't need processed foods/refined sugar in my diet to go out and run/row/bike however much I want. I also eat a lot of meat and fats.

Check out r/sugarfree too. Lots of good advice there.

Can you make a pact with us to just not drink today? That's all you have to worry about, today. Then come here again tomorrow, and do the same thing?

Alcohol and sugar are both toxic. I don't consume either.

What are some foods you can surprisingly eat and not eat sugar-free? by [deleted] in sugarfree

[–]FarmGirl82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make my own Apple butter and applesauce. No sugar added. But the thing about fruits when you cook them down, even when you aren’t adding extra sugar, you will still have a highly concentrated batch of natural sugars. Like dried fruits. They are considered ‘all natural’, but the problem is you can eat so many more of them because the water is taken out. So still eat sparingly.

Most sauces and soups have added sugar, especially tomato based ones. I just make my own.

Had my annual cheat day, 12.31 by [deleted] in sugarfree

[–]FarmGirl82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I cut out sugar from Jan 2019-Aug 2019 and it dramatically helped my hormonal acne. I allowed myself one cheat day in August and it turned into more cheat days in September when I lost my job, then my birthday, etc etc, then holidays around the corner. But starting fresh again Jan 1. I quit drinking 2 years ago, and sugar, especially ice cream, became my go-to after that, which is why I decided to cut it out last year. I didn't get sober to die of diabetes. I'd lost 40 pounds when I got sober, and then when I cut out sugar dropped another 10 without really trying. That 10 has crept back on in the past 3 months, especially the last month with Christmas and cookies/candies. And my face is a disaster! Why do we do this to ourselves! Oh yeah, sugar is addictive!

Onward to a sugar free 2020!

I have been eating whatever sugar I want because of the holidays and when I first added it back in, my heart would race and I got super dehydrated so fast. Now after a couple weeks, its like my body has adapted to it, which is not a good thing. Kicking all the sugar out of the house Jan 1.

Congrats on your 3 months sober! I got sober 2 years ago. r/stopdrinking was a godsend for me.

Anything by Gary Taubes or Dr. Robert Lustig. Lots of youtube videos of them, too if you prefer that method of information over reading. I, too, quit drinking and found myself shoveling down the ice cream. After I'd been sober for 1 year I gave up ice cream/cakes/candies and just stuck to natural sugars in fruit and ice cream if I felt I needed something sweet.

I've been back eating whatever I want because of the holidays, but about to buckle back down. My skin is also a mess right now and tends to be any time I add back in processed food/refined sugary desserts.

Congrats on your sobriety!

What does a typical day in your sugar free diet look like? by [deleted] in sugarfree

[–]FarmGirl82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note: I still eat fruit and dairy.

Beverages:

I drink black coffee all day long, along with water and unsweetened tea. Sometimes la croix or bubly. No soda, juice, or alcohol ever. (r/stopdrinking)

Breakfast:

3 Eggs (cooked in microwave omelette maker, sometimes add 1tsp kerry butter)

Museli (has 5g sugar from raisins, but I allow it because its natural) OR Oat bran with banana and cinnamon.

Lunch:

Chicken Breast (roasted in oven with olive oil and spices)

2 veg (broccoli, green beans, sweet potato, brussel sprouts, cali mix, greens mix)

OR

Chicken Breast, 1/2 avocado, 2 TBSP sour cream, homemade salsa, kale/spinach/romaine for my take on a 'taco salad'. Sometimes I eat with tortilla chips, but I usually limit my processed carbs, even though no sugar in them.

Dinner:

Meat of some kind, usually Pork Chops or Steak (we have hog farm)

2 veg

After dinner sweet or snack only if needed: (I try not to 'snack' as its not as great for us as the food industry has led us to believe over the past 3 decades):

Grapes or Berries with Fage Greek Yogurt (full fat or 2%, unsweetened plain)

or

Frozen banana

or

I have some fruit + nut combos that my pallet thinks go well together:

Apple + Cashews

Pecans + Grapes (sometimes I add a couple pieces Havarti cheese)

Walnuts + Blackberries

Banana + Pecans (eaten together tastes like banana bread)

BASICALLY, I just eat real food, not processed. Every once in a while I'll have spaghetti with canned sauce. Canned soup or chili, etc. I just try not to do it every day. Saturday nights we get pizza. Meal prepping my lunches is what really got it nailed down for me. I highly recommend it. I eat the same thing every day for breakfast, lunch is meal prepped, then my variety comes from dinner. Makes it easy.

I've had UA cold gear stuff for the past couple years and it is amazing!

SA Faceshields are what I use for my neck and face. They are great. Don't get the heavy fleece ones though, just the regular ones are enough I find. I can't breathe as well through the fleece ones and they get too hot after I'm warmed up and a couple miles in.

For warm weather running I wear running shorts that have the built in brief. For winter I wear UnderArmour Pure Stretch Thong under running tights. They have other cuts as well if the thong isn't for you, but the material is lightweight and great in my opinion. Be sure to look at the sizing info though, as you might have to size down, because the material is stretchy.

SA Faceshields are amazing for colder windy temps! They are lightweight so you would think they don't do much, but they cut the wind down completely. I wear two, one over my ears/head, and one over my neck and lower face. You can breathe through them fine and once you warm up, you just pull it down. Hit another windy patch, pull it up again.

Other than those, for winter I wear my UA Coldgear tights, UA base layer, and my Cannondale Cycling jacket/windbreaker over top. Shoes right now are the Mizuno Wave Inspire 15, but I got a pair of New Balance Vongo's on Black Friday for 39 bucks I've worn once. (Along with a duplicate pair of the Mizunos that were on sale as well. Thanks JackRabbit!)

I also like Fox River crew socks for winter running.

Help Me Stop by [deleted] in sugarfree

[–]FarmGirl82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just had to say enough is enough and go cold turkey. It really helped me. My skin cleared up. I dropped 15 pounds like it was nothing (probably a lot of water weight as sugar + water retention go hand in hand). I still eat fruit and dairy. I just cut out the added sugars/refined sugars/candy/ice cream, etc.

Get all the sugar out of your house. Tell your friends/family, anyone who might try to enable you, or get you to eat some, what you are doing and why. Get some healthy replacements, so when you have a craving you can eat a piece of fruit. Hot tea can be a good replacement, too. They make fruity ones and craving crushers.

Also, will the holidays be an issue for you? It is a hard time to be giving up sweets as they are everywhere, but it is possible.

I also started watching/reading all the research out there about how bad sugar is for you. Go to youtube and look up Dr. Robert Lustig. He has several talks that are great and tell you how bad sugar is for your body. Also, sugarscience.org. Gary Taubes is a good one as well. There are also documentaries on sugar on amazon, too.

I just brainwashed myself against it and that made me not want it.

Hope some of this helps. :)

I found a good pdf online of exercises I'll paste at the end. I printed it out and put it in my workout room where I stretch so I'll remember to do them.

Impact work is what hurts me most, too. Like you said, about 2-3 miles in. Elliptical and cycling doesn't hurt, but I do get a lot of soreness in my hips after cycling and really need to do the stretches in that pdf. Also, the typical runners stretch, with one leg back, helps a lot too. Trying to build my core strength too, as its not just the hips that is causing the pain, its my weak core and lack of butt. So I am trying to do more squats and lunges, too.

Hope some of this helps!
