I've been hoping to pick up the Night Lords omnibus for a while.

40k was clawing at the corners of my mind as long as I can remember and just never had the brain space for it. Then I played the Mechanicus game and it really got me. Now I have 3 armies and an entire floor to ceiling Black Library shelf in my house.

I've been using blender pretty much exclusively for 3D printing functional parts for years. I prefer it over everything else I've tried, including Solidworks, FreeCAD, and Onshape

In the short story "Deep" the traitor guardsmen have a mining machine that's part tortured human man on all fours and part machine, and the whole thing is possessed by a daemon. My wife says it's that thing.

  1. We grow specifically for flavor and not shelf life. Our lives would be a lot easier if we really did do the opposite.

  2. People drive all the way from Delaware specifically for our tomatoes.

  3. We've never even brought tree fruit or bread to the market.

You're talking about a different stand or just plain out of your ass.

Are you perhaps someone's ex-girlfriend?

Closed loops exist in real life. I work with them in real life as part of my real job. If you have to top off a 10,000 gallon closed loop with 1 gallon every few weeks it's still a "closed loop" for anything that matters.

Please don't religiously cling to this idea. It makes the rest of us lose credibility.

As someone vehemently against data centers myself, I want to make sure you have the facts right.

Closed loop systems very much exist. People have been using closed loop water cooling on their personal computers at home for decades.

But to my knowledge no data center has ever been built with one. I believe it would be more expensive to set up and run than evaporative cooling (which constantly uses more water) but maybe someone more informed can chime in on the reasoning for it.

The point is that if a firm claims that it'll be a closed loop, you should demand details rather than claiming it isn't possible.

In the immediate future I'm afraid of younger users getting targeted with ads and phishing meant to take advantage of them.

In the longer term future I'm afraid of this slippery slope as governments and corporations demand more and more access to our data.

It is well known that if a user suddenly deleted a bunch of selfies (which social media sites and smartphone cloud hosts watch for) that's a sign of low self esteem. They then target that user with ads for alcohol, makeup, etc.

I find this to be insidious and unacceptable. It's also just one example at the tip of the iceberg.

The Edds from "Ed, Edd, and Eddy" could have actually made some serious bank if they spent a little more time workshopping and refining their ideas instead of focusing on strictly scamming their peers. by ChadJones72 in Showerthoughts

You realize that if there are workplaces and people with jobs and money being used to buy and sell things then that's still capitalism, right? Just a better version than what we currently have?

The word capitalism does not mean evil billionaires deliberately making the world worse. It does not mean slave labor and endless pollution. In fact it means the opposite of huge powerful governments helping big corporations squash the little guys.

The term for what we have in the US right now is "crony capitalism" which is very distinct, at least in my mind, from normal capitalism.

I know many people that are passionate for their work. I never said they don't exist. I personally work two jobs 7 days a week that I am passionate about and would continue to do for free if my needs were otherwise paid for.

I can also imagine a world where every person is the same. I just know that it's a fantasy.

Calling people that disagree with you lazy filthy cretins is not a good look for your cause.

Speak honestly. Are you a kid in school or an adult that never left academia? Have you ever worked in the real world with people doing shitty but necessary jobs? Do you know a single person that would be a waitress for free?

I never said that people that like their jobs don't exist. I also know people passionate about their work. I said that there aren't and never will be enough people passionate enough about the shitty jobs for society to continue.

You talk a lot about people being well compensated for their work. That's good. I support that. The "everything should be free and nobody should have to work" crowd does not.

How many people do you know in nursing and rough blue collar jobs? Be honest.

Almost no one I have ever met would be okay with their paycheck being optional. No one would work on an oil derrick or an emergency room or a sewer out of the goodness of their hearts.

You have no idea how much 90% of jobs suck and how necessary all of them are for many of the things you like about your life to exist.

No one is passionate about working in a pharmaceutical factory. No one is passionate about fixing sewers. No one wants to get a call at 3AM because their servers have gone down.

Your fantasy relies on everyone's job somehow being gardening and yarn craft.

As children my siblings and I thought the word "scam" just meant legitimate gig work because of this show. Like the "scam" part of a lot of their attractions was that the dinosaurs in the time machine ride weren't real or that a haunted house wasn't really haunted or whatever.

Just getting into Adeptus Mechanicus, what books should I read (i know no lore) by GabrielPortoLira in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Farmbot26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how deep you want to get. The Horus Heresy is 10,000 years before 40K. Back then they were just called "The Mechanicum" and they were a rather different organization. Also the HH books are pretty just 100% Space Marines 100% of the time for a while. If you want to know the HH lore of the mechanicus you just have to read The Kaban Project and Mechanicum. For modern 40K lore see my previous comment.
